EPISODE 11 David screws his eyes shut and swallows the lump in his throat, he folds his hands into fists and tightens them, “it was not my fault Vivian, not everything is my fault,” he yells. “Well whose fault is it?” She barks, her eyes squinted at him. My father rarely calls my mother by her first name unless he is upset with her and he has every right to be but I’m concerned about how such tension between them will have a negative effect on his health, we haven’t even bought the medication prescribed for him. I jerk off my chair and rush to stand in between them with the intention of ceasing fire. “Mother....I don’t think you...” “Just shut up and stay out of this Becky...go to your room and leave the adults to handle their own affairs,” my mother cuts in before I could finish my sentence. “Don’t you dare speak to my daughter like that ever again,” father snarls after rising to his feet. I hate having to see my parents verbally fighting especially over something they shouldn’t fight about. “I will just go to my room,” I excuse myself before trailing away and leaving them alone. David and Vivian stand gazing at each other, tension simmering in the air, as much as David loves and respect his wife he is not going to stand her unjustified tantrums. “I need you to calm yourself down, sit down and listen to what I have to say,” he demands. “No! You were not man enough to keep your job and now things are going to be harder than they already are, so there is nothing you can tell me that will be worth listening to,” she tightens her lips and starts to walk away, David grabs her arm to stop her from leaving, “I’m your husband, you need to show me respect,” he scoffs. “Respect!” she laughs. “Respect is earned,” she adds. David pushes her down onto a chair, she crosses her legs and folds her hands across her chest. “I didn’t do anything wrong to deserve being laid off...the business was not doing well so they had to retrench some of the employees and unfortunately I was one of them...I understand that I have not been able to give you the fancy lifestyle that you want and I’m very sorry about that Vivian.” He takes hold of her hand and rubs it gently. Vivian looks aside and she can’t even stare at her husband’s eyes while he speaks to her. “Will it make you feel better to know that I have a job interview next week?” This gets Vivian’s attention, she immediately looks up at him with hope and curiosity written all over her face, “Really? Where and what position?” she eagerly questions. David relaxes a little now that he has got his wife to calm down, he leans his back against the chair and rests his hands on the chair’s arm rest, “it’s a gardening job,” he sighs, knowing that this is not going to impress his wife. “Gardening job! Are you kidding me....?” she frowns. “This one is going to be different from the gardening piece jobs I used to do,” “Different how? You will still be weeding other people’s gardens for a living, that is far from a respectable job,” she smirks “The job won’t be part time, it will be full time and the money is going to be twice what I was getting at the bakery. Things will get better and Becca won’t have to be selling cupcakes all the time,” “That’s if you even get the job,” she mutters. “Oh I will get the job don’t you worry,” he confidently states. “How can you be sure?” “Because I’m the best gardener in this town, I have a lot of experience and great references,” he responds. A pleased smile starts to spread across Vivian’s face, she peers at her husband with hopeful and dreamy eyes. “Now that you have a smile on your face, how about we take it upstairs, you know it was a lonely night I had at the hospital, why not help me forget about it,” he whispers naughtily as he takes her hands and pulls her to stand on her feet. She pretends not to be interested, “hmm...I’m not feeling that great,” she blinks. “Oh really...well...I’m sure there is something I can do to make you feel a whole lot better,” he whispers softly and follows by flipping her hair away and kissing on her neck. “Oh...my...you know what....I feel better already,”” she giggles, she takes his hand and they run up the stairs into their bedroom and shut the door closed. ** Alone in my room I have been asking myself what’s going on with my parents, I suddenly hear two pairs of feet running up the stairs and onto the corridor, I wonder what that is about so I quietly get out of my room and stand outside their bedroom my ear at their door trying to hear what’s happening. “Oh David...ah....ah...” my mother breathlessly moans. Oh my god! I’m repulsed but what I hear and I wish it were possible to un hear it, How do two people go from fighting to ripping each other’s clothes off in bed? I go back to my own room and sit on the edge of the bed thoughtfully staring at Greenfield’s card in my hands, should I give him a call and thank him for driving us home? But I did thank him in person so he will wonder why I’m calling to say the same words I uttered to him earlier today. The image of his thin kissable lips and his masculine chest plays on my mind. I can just imagine him pressing me against his hard chest and capturing my lips in a steamy fervent kiss, the thought of it all makes me want to moan. ‘Okay Becca...you need to stop dreaming about something that will never happen’ I say to myself and I put away Greenfield’s card. I return to the kitchen to do the dishes and tidy up and then I leave the house to go to the pharmacy to buy father’s medication using the money I got from Pamela. I’m relieved when the medication costs much lesser than I expected this means I will be left with enough money to buy Matt the running shoes I promised to get for him. *** A few hours later I go to Matt’s school to pick him up, he excitedly runs into my arms the minute he sees me, I tighten my arms around him, feeling very proud of the responsible and clever young boy he is. “You left before I woke up,” he complains. “I know...I’m sorry...I had to go and see dad at the hospital,” I say. An understanding expression plasters on his face before it quickly changes to worry and concern, “how is he doing...did he wake up?” He peers at me with hope glimmering in his eyes. He looks so much like father, I never have to wonder what father looked like when he was young because the answer is always right next to us. “He woke up, in fact he is home as we speak,” I gleefully inform him, “Really?” He gazes at me with relief and joy glinting in his eyes. He gets even more excited when I tell him that I’m planning on taking him to the town mall to buy him the running shoes he has been crying for but first we must go home so he can see his father. We get home just in time for lunch, mother prepared creamy mashed potatoes, my father’s favourite. They seem to be doing well, there is no longer tension between them but exchanging of smiles and playful glances. Soon after lunch my mother asks Matt to help her out with something outside leaving me and my father alone and I think it’s the perfect time to talk to my father about what he is going to do now that he has lost his job. I’m surprised to learn he was called for a job interview and he is confident he will get the job but I can’t help worrying about what will happen if he doesn’t get hired? He asks me not to worry, he will always make a plan to provide for his family no matter what happens. He thanks me for being there for him and for being the good daughter that I have always been before wrapping his long arm around me. I love him so much and I’m glad I make him proud, that’s all I have ever wanted, I hope things between us will always stay this good. “I’m done helping mother...can we go to the mall now?” Matt eagerly asks. “I don’t see why not, let me grab my bag and we go,” “Got it already,” Matt pulls out my bag from behind him and waves it at him. My father can’t help but laugh at his impatience, “someone is very excited,” he chuckles. “You have no idea,” he beams. I take my bag from Matt and he holds my hand ready to go, “I will see you guys later,” I say before making my way out. “Make sure you are home in time to cook dinner...I’m not your cook,” mother yells. “Okay mother,” I shake my head and sigh. The weather is just beautiful for a walk outside, the warmth of the sun on my skin feels great, I imagine those who are at the beach right now are enjoying themselves, basking in the sun, sipping on tasty expensive drinks. “What are you thinking about?” Matt can’t stop himself from asking. “Nothing you would understand Mattie,” I smile at him while ruffling his hair. Matt loves being at the mall, he can never get enough of it, its atmosphere and design fascinates him, if he could have it his way then we would spend the entire day there moving from one shop to another just admiring the clothes and the toys sold there. I personally hate being at the mall because I don't like being reminded of how poor I am and how I cannot afford purchasing any of the nice things being sold here. There aren’t many shops that sell children’s clothing at the mall so Matt and I move around a lot before finding a*****e that sells children’s shoes. Matt peers at me with uncertainty, I figure his asking himself if I can afford buying from the store because it appears to be a premium store. I won’t know if I can afford or not unless I walk in and ask for the prices of their sneakers.
