PROLOGUE
Sophie felt a flush rise to her cheeks at his words, a mixture of indignation and fascination swirling within her. "I'm not interested in fame or fortune, Mr. Blackwood," she said, her voice tinged with defiance. "I suppose you could say that I'm driven by a thirst for justice," Sophie replied, her voice steady despite the butterflies that fluttered in her stomach. "I believe that everyone deserves to know the truth, no matter how uncomfortable or inconvenient it may be. I'm interested in the truth. And if you have nothing to hide, believe me when I tell you, that you have nothing to fear."
Alexander regarded her with a mixture of curiosity and amusement, his lips quirking into a half-smile. "A noble sentiment, Miss Reynolds," he said, his tone tinged with a hint of sarcasm. "But tell me, do you truly believe that the truth is always worth pursuing? Even if it means risking everything you hold dear?"
Sophie felt a chill run down her spine at his words, a chill that seemed to penetrate her very soul. She knew that Alexander was probing her for weaknesses, testing her resolve to see if she had what it took to uncover the truth, no matter the cost.
"I believe that the truth is worth fighting for, Mr. Blackwood," Sophie replied, her voice firm and unwavering. "Even if it means risking everything."
Alexander's lips curved into a wry smile at her words, a glint of amusement dancing in his eyes. "Ah, amazing feat I must say, I guess that is why you are known as the powerful Sophie Reynolds that visits the unjust in their darkest and most secret nightmares. But Miss Reynolds, we all have our secrets, don't we? Even you."
Sophie felt a shiver running down her spine at his words, a chill that seemed to penetrate her very soul. She knew that Alexander was right—that everyone had secrets, even her. But she refused to let fear dictate her actions. She was determined to uncover the truth, no matter the cost.
With that resolve burning brightly within her, Sophie squared her shoulders and met Alexander's gaze head-on. She smiled her practiced smile yet again, "I see you have heard a lot about me. But then, I'll do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of this, Mr. Blackwood. I always do." she said, her voice firm and unwavering. "Even if it means digging up secrets that some would prefer to keep buried."
And with those words hanging in the air between them again, Sophie knew that she had embarked on a journey that would test her in ways she never thought possible—a journey that would lead her down a path of danger, intrigue, and passion, with Alexander Blackwood at the center of it all. She knew she had drawn a battle line. And with the way Alexander’s eyes narrowed and darkened as he gazed at her, she had no doubt that he was up and ready for her challenge. Alexander Blackwood did not in any way seem like one to back-down from a challenge.
Maybe this was not the best approach after all... it definitely wasn't.
