Chapter 13

*NICHOLAS P.O.V* “You look very handsome” my mom says as she fixes the collar on my shirt. I give her a small nod as I loop the tie around my neck. She goes to fix it as she gives me a sympathetic smile. “Thanks mom” I tell her. She finishes the tie and I stand back as I watch her nod in approval. “I’m sorry you couldn’t find your mate” mom says, “I wish you could have met her”. “No point in regrets mom” I shake my head, “This is for the best”. Which is true. I was doing this for a stronger alliance with the wolves. It seems they trust the Alpha of Silver Crescent Moon over the royals. “Fine” She says and we head out to wait for Tamara and her family. Once we walk into the living room, we see everyone already there. My father has put on his best suit and sits patiently with a cup of tea. My brother James sits with Aunt Regina while Winston and Alyssa stand near by. Those two have become inseparable now. A bit of jealousy arises as my little brother holds his mate’s hand. “You look nice” Arielle chimes as she sees me scanning the room, “Usually you look like a grumpy old man”. She laughs as I roll my eyes at her. “Arielle” Aunt Regina starts to scold her, “Behave”. Arielle nods but I see her smirk as she turns away. That girl couldn’t be any more different than her mother. “They’ve arrived” an Omega maid interrupts us. “Bring them in” my father orders her as everyone straightens themselves out. Soon we hear a knock on the door and the omega leads them to where we are. “Welcome” my father says first, “We are happy you all accepted our invitation”. They start to bow but my mom interrupts them, “No need for that. We are family now”. She smiles as she starts to greet them personally. “Thank you” Former Alpha Joseph tells them, “Can’t wait to make it official”. He smiles as he extends his hand to the girl behind them. A tall blonde walks forward as her heels click on the floor. She smiles broadly as she bats her eyelashes. “Hello everyone” She says with a smile, “Can’t believe we’re all finally meeting”. “Likewise” James is the first to say. With a smirk on his face, he extends his hand to her. She smiles back at him and takes his hand. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say those two were about to f**k by the way they’re looking at each other. Winston fakes a cough to bring the attention back to the family, and I suppress a laugh at their startled expressions. “I’m Alyssa” Winston’s mate tells them. “A new addition to the family?” Alpha William asks, “How-“ “She’s my mate, Alpha William” Winston says possessively as he pulls Alyssa closer to him. He nods slowly as he continues to eye Alyssa and I watch as his body tenses. Does he know her? Alyssa on the other hand, doesn’t react to his staring. “Where’s your mate, Alpha William?” James asks him, “Shouldn’t she be here?”. He snaps his eyes away from Winston and Alyssa and glares at James, “She’s fulfilling her Luna duties”. “Luna duties” James repeats slowly, “I had hoped to see Valentina again”. “Why’s that?” William asks angrily. “To congratulate her of course” James replies and I recognize the antagonizing tone in his voice. Stop whatever games you’re playing Jay, I mind-link my brother. “Nicholas” Eloise Davidson interrupts now, “My daughter Tamara can’t wait to begin planning the wedding”. I look over at them as I watch the blonde smile even more widely now. Her skimpy dress was leaving little to the imagination. “Right” I say as I feel the little ring box in my pocket. The princess cut engagement ring that I had my mother buy. I walk over to her as I take the box out of my side pocket. She squeals as she realizes what I’m about to do. I take the ring out and she holds her hand out to me. “Wait!” Eloise gasps, “Let me at least take a picture on my phone”. Ignoring her, I place the engagement ring on her hand and I hear both of our families cheering. Especially my dad, I can hear the relief in his tone. To him, I finally did something right. “You’re officially my fiancé” I tell Tamara. I try not to falter as the words leave my mouth. Never have I regretted something more than this moment right now. “When’s the wedding?” She excitedly squeals as her mom comes over to hug her. “Tomorrow” I say flatly. The gasps and muttering around the room comes as a surprise to me. I thought they wanted us to be married off as quickly as possible? Is tomorrow not soon enough? “That’s too soon!” Eloise starts to whine, “You can’t possibly expect us to-“ “The wedding is just to confirm our relationship status” I assure her, “The coronation ceremony is more important and it’s what truly counts”. “As a royal” Aunt Regina starts, “Being crowned Queen is far more important than being named a wife”. “Fine” I hear Tamara say. She comes over and wraps her arm around mine. I try not to shrug her off as our families eye us. “Great” Alpha William says, “This is truly a great weekend”. If he’s saying that about his own wedding and new mate, then I can’t help it but to feel bad for the girl. Valentina Harrington. What did you do to deserve that chum as your mate? Every picture of her led me to believe that she was too good for him. Her soft kind eyes…her lushes pink lips…the way she carries herself. Just how did she end up with him? “…right Nick?” I hear my mom say loudly. Interrupting my thoughts, I look around and see everyone looking at me. “Of course” I say without confusion. I nod as I watch my mom relax. “Then it’s settled. Catching the hybrid is top priority. With my help, we’ll catch this guy soon enough. It’ll be your first achievement as King and Queen” William arrogantly says. So that’s what I agreed to. Catching the mysterious hybrid. The one that’s supposedly working with rogues to attack wolf packs. Everyone believes this hybrid is working with dark magic as well. No one truly knows though… “We would love any help you can give Alpha William” Aunt Regina says, “He’s a menace to the supernatural world”. “We do need evidence to prove that the hybrid is behind these attacks” I remind them “We can’t just accuse him blindly”. “Was it not the hybrid symbol we saw the night of the attack on the Shadow Hunters?” “We can’t be certain it was him” Winston interjects for me, “Perhaps he was helping the Shadow Hunters”. “Do you honestly believe that?” Our father asks us, “That this guy, having all that power, couldn’t defend and protect the Shadow Hunters?”. None of us say anything as we take in what he just said. Having all that magic and strength, he could have protected the Shadow Hunters that night. But he didn’t. Are they right then? Could it mean he used dark magic against the wolves that night? Is the hybrid a threat to us all? “There’s plenty of time after tomorrow for that” my mom says trying to change the conversation, “Should we start preparing for the wedding?”. She looks over at Eloise and Tamara, who both nod in excitement. “We can call Zeynep the dressmaker to bring some dresses and then we can call Andrew for flowers-“ “Quentin makes the best food!” Tamara interrupts her mom as they continue to plan for tomorrow. “How about we leave the ladies and I can show you around?” My father tells William and his dad, Joseph. Aunt Regina flinches as this means she has to stay and plan a wedding. Truly, this is her worst nightmare. “Very well” Joseph tells him, “It’ll be nice to know where my daughter will live now”. An omega brings my dad a wheelchair and we start to head out. “Can I come too, Uncle Fred?” Arielle uses her best pleading voice as she stands next to us. “Of course not. Why don’t you-“ “Why don’t we go make some calls upstairs, Ellie?” I hear Alyssa interrupt, “We can call the decorators and asks some Omegas to bring us tea”. Ever since she got here with her cousins, father hadn’t been to kind to Alyssa. To say he wasn’t thrilled about Winston being mates with a witch, would be the understatement of the year. It not only put a strain on his relationship with Winston, but with mom as well. She wholeheartedly supports Winston and his mate. She even went as far as calling Alyssa her daughter now. “Let’s go” he says ignoring Alyssa and Ellie, “We can visit the trainers and our best defenders”. “Very well” William says as we start to walk out, “Let’s see the best defenders of the Royal Pack”. “Our commander and warriors should be in training right now” dad tells him, “Our borders are secure with them”. “Are they really?” William asks in a condescending manner, “No one can know for sure”. “I can assure you they are” I try not to let my anger get the best of me but this guy was really something else. His ego was filling up the room by the second. “Let Alpha William judge for himself” James says, “Let our defense speak for itself”. I see William smirk as we continue walking but I don’t say anything else. William carefully examines everything and everyone we pass by. His father on the other hand, had his eye on a couple of unmated Omegas. All those rumors about his mistresses and infidelities were true then. Perhaps the apple won’t fall from the tree when it comes to William. For Valentina’s sake, I hope he doesn’t. We reach the defense training center where all the warriors are gathered. They immediately bow when they notice dad. “Welcome King Fredrick” Commander Reagan says first, “We are happy to see you”. “Thank you Reagan” Dad tells him and he motions for him to bring his second commander. A square-faced woman with a medium build walks over to us. She bows at us but remains silent. “I’m William” he extends his hand but she remains motionless. She looks him up and down before returning her gaze to my dad. “She doesn’t really talk” my father tells him, “She’s our second commander, Raya”. William nods but I can see his jaw clenching. Perhaps this is the first time someone has refused to greet him. Interesting… “Perhaps a new commander is needed” Joseph Davidson says under his breath, “Woman aren’t that good”. “Show our guests the new training routines we have” Dad tells Reagan and Raya. He obviously heard that remark but is choosing to ignore it. Typical. Stepping forward and ready to say something, I feel my brother’s hand on my shoulder. “The warriors are ready” James says as we step inside. They nod and soon the warriors are in full training mode. William and his dad exchange looks as they carefully examine all the warriors. After twenty minutes of an intense routine, the whistle blows and everyone stops. “Impressive” William’s Dad tells us, “The training is great”. “That’s just how things are around here” my dad huffs with pride, “All of our warriors are ready for everything”. Ever since his health started to decline, he hadn’t been back here in a while. Each training session was a painful reminder on how weak he’s gotten. My dad. A once feared King was now a frail man. To see him beam with pride was something I hadn’t seen in a while. Especially when it came to us, his sons. “We should get going” I tell them, “We still have things to do”. “Like what?” James asks, “The woman are planning the wedding and Winston ran off with his mate. He’s already drafting the prenup and agreements”. “Prenup?” William asks surprised, “Are you planning to leave my sister once-“ “Don’t be disrespectful Will” his dad interrupts him, “Everyone gets a prenup. Don’t forget you did too”. “I just don’t think it’s appropriate-“ I’ve had enough of him now. This pompous a** thinks he knows everything. “It’s inappropriate for you to judge me based on your assumptions”. I watch as his eyes slowly turn black and his lips form a tight line. “I’m just protecting my sister” William growls at me, “I’ll always protect her”. “You don’t need to worry” I say plainly, “She’ll be safe with me”. Not giving him the satisfaction of getting a rise out of me, I start to walk back to the pack-mansion. You have to be careful, My wolf Roman tells me, He’s dangerous. His eyes slowly turned purple at first. What do you mean purple? I didn’t see any purple. I only saw his eyes turn black. They turned purple for a nanosecond and then they went fully black. He controlled his emotions so they wouldn’t turn purple. My wolf had no reason to lie to me. He is my counterpart. He catches everything a regular wolf, even an Alpha, won’t see. The perks of being a royal is that he notices things like this. Being that the case, this wasn’t a good sign. Only someone who’s tampered with dark magic can get their eyes to turn purple. Not only was he trying to hide this but he’s also shown us what he’s been up. “Are the agreements finished?” I ask Winston through mind-link, “I want to sign all the documents tonight”. Sooner or later, William Davidson, I’ll find out what you’re hiding. It’s just a matter of time before I do.
