Chapter 1
*VALENTINA'S P.O.V*
Take a deep breath, I remind myself. I agreed to this, no one forced me, this was my choice. My family needs me and so does my pack. Yet, I couldn’t shake this heartache I was feeling. Forcing the tears back down, I hold my head up high and continue walking. I turn a corner and find the doors to my dad’s office slightly opened. I knock a few times before the guard lets me in.
All of my siblings give me their best smile as I walk in.
“Valentina”, my dad motions for me to stand by him. I take my place beside him and my mother as I smile at the Davidson family.
“You were right William. Her beauty is exquisite” Alpha Davidson says to his son William. He in turn, smiles at me as I feel myself blush.
“How very kind of you” my mom says. “How was your journey to our pack?”
“Lovely, the weather is quite fair today” Luna Eloise says nonchalantly.
I can see her eyes judging us from the moment they stepped on our territory. We weren’t a small pack but compared to theirs, we might as well have been.
“Alpha” the maid interrupts, “He’s here”.
My dad nods as another maid brings in Mark Romano, the head of the council.
“Good afternoon Joe” Mark says while shaking hands with Alpha Davidson.
“Mark, how’s it going?”
They greet each other as old friends. From the enthusiastic hand shake to the patting on the back that men usually do. A shiver runs down my spine as I realize the alliance they might have on their own.
“Alpha Harrington” Marks says while extending his hand out.
My father takes his hand and firmly shakes it, “Welcome Mr. Romano”.
“Please, call me Mark. Let’s leave out the formalities” Mark says laughing.
After looking around he finally says, “Let’s get to it then”.
Inside my fathers office, we all take a seat. With my family being on one side and William’s family being on the other. Mark sits in the middle as the maid brings in tea and coffee.
“Which one of you is Valentina?” Mark asks us.
Like a child I raise my hand, “I’m Valentina”.
“Nice to meet you” He says with a smirk.
“Likewise”
He eyes me suspiciously before saying, “I’m curious, how come the council has rarely heard of you?”
I gulp as I knew this question would arise but I keep my cool. I don’t want to seem nervous…especially not today.
“I like my privacy” I say with a shrug which makes my brother snicker. Ignoring him, I continue to stare at the council member.
“Very well” He says back, “To what we came for”. He pulls out a manila envelope from his briefcase and places it on the small table before him.
The maid brings in two chairs and places them before the table. Flashing me a smile, William takes a seat first. I flatten out my dress while taking the seat next to him.
“As a council member I must ask” Mark clears his throat, “Is this your choice? Are you making this choice free of coercion?” He looks between the both of us.
“This is my choice” William states clearly.
I look at my sister Maisie, who gives me a sympathetic smile. The tears around her eyes reflect the heartache I’m feeling. She always knew how I was feeling, even if I don’t say anything. I look at my twin siblings, Brandon and Camila as they stare at me in suspense. I look away and turn to see Mark giving me a questioning look.
“This is my choice” I tell him.
I could sense how William relaxes into his seat as I say this. Was he nervous? Did he think I’d go back on my word?
“Excellent!” Mark says loudly, “Now because an Alpha is taking a chosen mate, it was necessary for me to ask”, He takes out the papers from the envelope and places them before us.
“What’s this?” William asks.
“The agreement form. An alliance agreement between the two packs and…” he takes out another form, “The marriage agreement”.
My stomach turns as he mentions my imminent marriage. I can feel the tears threatening to form as all eyes are on us now.
“Wonderful” William says with a smile.
I can only return the smile as I feel a lump growing in my throat.
“Now all we need are the signatures” Mark says holding out a pen.
William excitedly grabs the pen and signs the first document. Since I won’t be the Alpha of my pack and Austin is nearing the age of adulthood, both he and my father will sign. I go to grab the marriage agreement when it’s suddenly pulled away.
“I’ll sign all the documents today and the rest we can do this Friday” William says with a smirk. I arch my eyebrow at him as he closes the envelope. He passes them to his father who in turn, tucks them into his briefcase.
“What’s the meaning of this?” My dad asks suddenly. I can feel the tension in the room growing as William stands from his seat. Mark has an amused look on his face but doesn’t say anything.
“Don’t worry the agreement still stands” William says, “But Friday is the day of our wedding. I want people to see how beautiful my bride is”.
“What does that have to do with signing the documents?” my mother speaks up now. I notice the tiny vein in her forehead popping up now. She’s trying so hard to contain her anger but she has a habit of being unpredictable.
“The day of our wedding is when the agreement is finalized. I want the rest of our lives to start of beautifully” William says to me now. He extends his hand to me and I willingly accept. On my feet now, I stand next to him and his family.
“We didn’t know about the wedding party” Camila adds quietly.
“Call it a last minute detail. I don’t want you guys to see this as just a deal” William tells her, “After all, past Friday we’ll officially be family”.
I hold my breath as I feel the room spinning. I can’t believe that weasel changed our plans like this. He didn’t even consult me on this wedding. Deep down, I know this how it will be going forward. I’ll have to be the silent obedient wife following her husband’s every orders. The weak Luna that does whatever the Alpha does. I can’t believe what my life has come to.
“Don’t worry Valentina, all the wedding arraignments have been taken care of” His sister Tamara chimes in. She looks annoyed as if I’m wasting her time with a wedding.
“We should get going” William says “We want to get home before dinner”. Still holding my hand, he tries to pull me along while his family starts to exit the room.
“Wait” I tell him, trying to pull my hand out off his grip. “I’m staying”.
“We’re leaving” William says in a low tone.
“No!” I yell this time. My parents rush to my side as they grip both my shoulders.
William’s eyes turn pitch black as he finally lets go of my hand. I know his wolf is on the surface as his chest rises fast.
“Is there a problem?” Mark asks. Although he’s mostly asking William and Alpha Davidson.
“We’re leaving. You should start getting to know our pack and pack members before the wedding” William says while exhaling.
“I’m not leaving” I tell him. I stare into his eyes, not backing down. I won’t leave with him, at least not today.
“Valentina” He says in a warning tone.
“I’m not leaving” I repeat myself. It helps that my magic is keeping my wolf at bay.
“You heard my daughter” My dad tells him in a firm voice, “She’s not leaving”.
Tamara rolls her eyes as she loudly taps her foot against the floor. I can tell neither William or his dad are used to being told no.
“I’ll stay tonight so I can properly say goodbye to my pack” I say giving in, “And tomorrow morning you can come or send someone to pick me up”. As much as it pained me to give into his demand, I had to for the sake of the alliance agreement. I can’t have this weasel doing anything else to threaten this agreement.
“Sounds great” Alpha Davidson says with a forced smile. He places a hand on William shoulder and leads him away. The latter walks away without so much as a glance my way. Mark follows them and I hear the maids saying goodbye to them. As soon as we hear the door slam we all exhale in relief.
“I’m so sorry” My mom says while embracing me. I lay my head on her shoulder while forcing down the lump in my throat.
“You don’t have to sacrifice yourself like this Val” Brandon tells me.
I shake my head at him, “I’m not. This was my choice”.
“Val-“
“No Brad. We need this alliance, we can’t afford another rogue attack” I tell my brother firmly.
“But-“
“This was my choice, okay?”.
I wait for all of them to nod or agree with me before walking out of the office. Once upstairs, I take off this overpriced dress and change into something more comfortable. I lay in bed, hugging my pillow while I slowly close my eyes.
You don’t have to do this, my wolf Amora tells me.
We’ve talked about this. I have to do it for my pack.
What about finding our destined mate?
I can’t think about that anymore. If I didn’t find him before, I won’t find him now. Besides, that dream is over. I have to think about my family and the safety of my pack. Over time, I hope to love William. I'll grow to love him, right? I can only hope now.
