*VALENTINA’S P.O.V* “Stay in the car!” Austin shouts as he starts to take off his clothes, “I’ll distract them while you guys drive away!” “What about you?!” He shakes his head, “I’ll be fine”. He opens the door and instantly shifts into his wolf. A giant black wolf with a white streak on his head appears. In seconds, he runs towards the scrawny ringleader. I couldn’t believe it! He’s a blessed wolf. The few who are blessed are known to have white streaks somewhere on their bodies. The Moon Goddess had blessed him with a special gift. What exactly, was the mystery. “We’re heading back to Midnight Stone” Tic says while putting the car in reverse, “We might need to ditch the car!”. He speeds away as more rogues pounce on the vehicle. As fast as he’s driving, there’s no way he can out run these wolves. There’s only one thing left to try… We can’t do magic without anyone noticing right now, my wolf Amora reminds me. Well we have to do something! Run! She shouts in my head. One of the wolves manages to tear the hood off the car while another clamps down at the side of the door. I knew it was just a matter of minutes before they got to us. “I’ll jolt the car to a halt before speeding again” Tic shouts as he swerves to avoid another wolf, “When I speed off, open the door and run”. “What?! That’s crazy! What about you?!” I ask frantically as glass breaks around me. He shake his head as he instantly stops the car, the wolves collide with each other as I hear the engines starting again. “Now!” He speeds away and I open the car door. Dropping out onto the pavement, I shift into my wolf Amora and run away. Hearing the rogues behind me I continue running in the direction of Midnight Stone. Even as I hear a loud crash behind me, I don't stop to look. I just hope he got out of the car in time. Shouldn’t the royal guards be around this area! I frantically tell my wolf, They’ll help us! As they gain speed on us, I turn left into the direction of what was once the Shadow Hunter’s territory. Hoping to find the royal guards, I’m met with disappointment. The charred territory was now eerie quiet without its members and guards. Burned out buildings and cars were all that was left. As I look for a place to hide, a massive black and grey wolf tackles us from behind. Taking me completely by surprise, I suspect he’s a royal guard or member. Only they are known for being extremely quiet. Amora tries to pushes him off as he digs his canines into our shoulder. A growl escapes me as I feel his canines dig deeper into my flesh. In one swift move, I push him off and bite down on his hind-leg. As he pushes me off, I make sure to take a chunk of his flesh with me. He growls in anger as he stares down at his bleeding paw. He tries to tackle me again but I turn right at the last second. Moving faster towards the woods, I feel his hot breath on my back legs. Only then do I realize the danger I am in. I can’t out run a Royal and I sure can’t use magic now. “I’ve got you little wolf” A familiar voice says coming to my rescue. A wave of fire then divides me and the wolf following me. I continue running as I hear the whimpers of the wolf behind me. I finally stop when I don’t hear his steps. As I turn to look, a muscular man appear from behind the tree. He puts his finger to his lips and I follow him. “Guess we’ll watch the show from here” he says as another witch comes out from behind a tree. She hands me a bag of clothes and I take them in my mouth. Shifting behind dense bushes, I put on the T-shirt and overalls I was handed. “Thanks Corrine” I say to the witch as she stands with the guy now. She smiles widely and we embrace as I hear the royal wolf growling again. “Little wolf” The guy gives me a quick hug as he turns back to watch the wolf. “Thanks Maxim” He nods as he continues watching the fight. “Royal mutts are always harder to take down” Corrine jokes, “He’s definitely a strong one”. “Not as strong though” Maxim says, “so he must be one of the younger brothers” “Of the Crown Prince?” I ask him. He nods as he puts on a black mask to hide his entire face. Corrine pushes me back and I see how Maxim joins the fight. Together with the other witches, they cast a spell on the royal wolf. A spell that will make him lose consciousness and prevent him from healing throughout this time. “Are they going to leave him here?” I ask Corrine. “Yes let the other mutts find him” She says with a smirk. While it does bug me that they refer to wolves with such demeanor, I understand why they do. The coven of the Phoenix Warriors were never keen on befriending wolves. Not for a truce or an alliance. Of course, I was a special case. “Let’s go girls” Their leader calls out to us, “We don’t have much time”. We make our way to where they are and I notice how wounded the royal wolf is. Severe burns with blood on his body, his front paw broken in two places, and not to mention the leg I punctured. “Was this really necessary?” I ask as I stare at the badly beaten wolf. “You didn’t read his thoughts” The coven leader Esma says, “We wiped his memories. He’ll forget us and you. Especially your scent”. “He knew who I was?” I ask worriedly. Esma shakes her head, “No but it’s better that he forgets everything that just happened”. She holds her hand out to me and I grab it while Corrine holds my hand. They all start to holds hands as they recite the spell to transport us to safety. Nos in domum suam In a flash, were in a townhouse in the nearby city. As much as they loved their privacy, the Phoenix Warriors also loved the city life. They blend in best with large groups of people…or so they say. “I’ve missed this place” I say as I admire the photos hanging on the walls. “We missed having you kid” One the wizards named Javier says as he passes by. I smile as they all relax in the living room. They offer me a bottle of water which I gladly accept. Esma ushers for me to sit next to her and I make my way to her. “It was reckless what you did last night” Esma scolds me. “They attacked the Shadow Hunters” I say defensively, “I wasn’t going to sit by and do nothing”. “Yes but you managed to expose yourself” Emma continues scolding me. “No one came to help them that night” I snap back. “We were there” Maxim tells me, “We saved a couple of wolves”. “It wasn’t enough” My hands shake as I think of everything that has happened these past twenty-four hours. Sensing how emotional I was getting, Esma places her hand on top of mine and lowers my body temperature, “They used dark magic and the help of rogues. It was utter chaos”. “I know” I say as I wipe away a tear, “It just happened so quick. I was useless”. She wraps her arms around me as I place my head on her shoulder, “You weren’t useless. You did your best. We all did”. “Plus we wouldn’t have gotten a lead on the coven that’s working with the rogues, if you hadn’t taken them out”, Another witch named Fatima says. “Yeah” Corrine chimes in, “Did you recognize any of them or their coven shmbol?” I let go of Esma and sit back in my seat, “There was a pair of red-headed girls…sisters I think” I tell them, “One was named Jaime”. “Jaime?” Esma asks puzzled and I nod. “The older girl had on a pendant necklace with a pentagram and two swords on fire” I continue, “Maisie has the necklace”. “What a strange symbol” Maxim adds. They all give each other strange looks as I look at them. As the Phoenix Warriors, they are amongst the oldest and immortal covens of our world. Being the brightest and strongest, most supernaturals prefer not to cross their path. Besides my family and I, they mostly interact amongst themselves. “We have to go Valentina” Esma says pulling me out of my thoughts. “Where?” “Back to Midnight Stone”. She starts to gather my belongings when her phone rings. The special ringtone that only belongs to my mother. “Luna Catalina?” Esma says into the phone, “What’s wrong?”. “The car that Valentina was traveling in was attacked” I hear the panic in my mom’s voice growing, “She’s nowhere to be found!” “Luna-“ “They found the other two men that were with her but not her!” “Wait-“ “Ian and a couple of the guards are looking for her, along with William-“ “She’s here!” Esma finally interrupts, “She safe with us”. I can hear my mother crying into the phone as she sighs in relief, “Oh Esma! Thank you! Thank you!” “We’re bringing her over now” “Don’t” My mom says quietly now, “Put me on speaker if she’s around”. Doing as she’s told, Esma sets the phone down on the coffee table, “Everyone’s listening now”. “The council finished their investigation. They just gave the official report to King Fredrick” My mom says in a more serious tone, “He’s vowed to bring justice for what happened last night. He’s also…” She’s hesitating and I just know it’s not good news. “Luna?” Corrine asks, “He’s also, what?” “He officially declared the hybrid a criminal and an outlaw”. I gasp as I hear the words ringing in my mind. Criminal and an outlaw. “He formed a special force just to hunt down the hybrid” My mom adds as I hold myself in place. “Where do we leave Valentina?” Esma asks, “Do we hide her?” “No, leave her near Silver Crescent Moon” my mom says suddenly, “She needs to marry William in order to stay safe”. “Will do” Esma says, “I’ll call you once she’s there”. They hang up and I look up to see all of the coven giving me worried looks. Maxim walks over and gives me a fatherly hug. “He won’t hurt you kid” Maxim says protectively, “We won’t allow it”. “He’ll have to go through all of us” Fatima says with a smirk, “I doubt he wants an all-out war”. She wasn’t relatively violent but she did love a good fight. I smile back as I watch all of them nodding in agreement even Esma smiles. As the leader of the coven, she decides what happens. “I’ll make you look ragged” Corrine says as she walks over to me, “You have to look the part”. I nod as she starts to work her magic. I can feel my clothes becoming dirty and ripped. My hair turned into a mess as she pulls it out of it’s ponytail. Javier raises an eyebrow at Corrine but I laugh it off. “Done!” Corrine says, “You’ll just have to act the part now”. We hold hands as we’re transported to the woods near Silver Crescent Moon. Since it’s human territory, no one will would have thought to search here. “We’ll always be close by” Esma whispers to me. She quickly gives me a hug as Corrine and Maxim join us. “Thank you” I tell them, “For everything”. They nod and usher for me to leave. As I slowly walk forward, I turn around to see them gone. It’s a thirty minute walk from here, my wolf Amora tells me. I carefully walk around the woods as I try to reach Silver Crescent. It doesn’t help that it’s already pitch black. Only when I notice the tiniest alarms in place, do I realize how close I am. Exhaling out the air in my lungs, I start the best performance of my life. Stumbling and barely holding myself up, I see multiple guards running towards me. “Luna?!” “Luna, are you alright?!” “It’s her!” “Call Alpha William!” One guard holds me up as I pretend to be losing consciousness. “Don’t worry Luna” The guard says, “Alpha William is coming!”. “Help me” I pretend to say weakly. The guard drapes my arm around his neck as another hold me up. Pretending to lose balance, they tighten their grip on me. We’ve barely walked a couple of feet when I feel the mood shift. He’s nearby, my wolf Amora warns me. I pretend to lose my balance again as I hear a loud growl. Sensing that he’s in wolf form, I pretend to lose consciousness now. The guards gently place me on the ground as William’s wolf sniffs me. “Sir, we called the medics already” “They’ll be here in minutes, Alpha” I can feel movement around me as I continue to lay unconscious. The shuffling of feet, the murmurs and heavy breathing are making me uncomfortable. Hearing how he shifts back to human, he gently caresses my face. Someone walks over to us and I feel William standing upright now. “Tell Doctor Mehmet to be ready” William shouts at his men. In one swift motion, he carries me in his arms and I feel the wind in my hair. I must admit he’s extremely careful even at the speed we’re going. “Don’t worry love” William whispers to me, “You’ll be okay”. A shiver runs down my spine as I hear him call me love. It’s weird that we’ve barely interacted yet tomorrow is our wedding. It wasn’t supposed to be like this but it is. I try not to move as he continues to carry me in his arms. Soon we reach the medical building of the pack and I feel him lowering me onto a stretcher. “Don’t worry Alpha” someone says, “She’ll be fine”. They wheel my gurney away as I hear someone else ask for my vitals. A tiny pinch and I feel a needle in arm. Blood is being drawn as another IV needle is being put in. A warm fluid begins to spread inside of me and I have the urge to rip it out. The burning sensation rapidly goes through my body as more fluid enters my body. Open your eyes slowly, my wolf Amora says, Try to be disoriented. Doing as I’m told, I slowly open my eyes and try to look around. I grunt as I try to sit up. “She’s awake!” A young doctor exclaims, “Tell Alpha William the good news!” He looks over at the nurse who hurriedly exits. “Where am I?” I ask him innocently, “Who are you?” He gives me a warm smile and I let him believe that this makes me relax, “I’m doctor Mehmet, Luna. You’re safe here at SCM medical center”. I nod as he takes out his stethoscope and carefully places it on my chest. Doing the breathing exercises he tells me, he gives me a thumbs up. “Where’s my fiancé?” I ask him in a worried tone. The doctor gestures to the door and suddenly William burst in. “I’m here love!” He rushes to my side and begins to caress my cheeks and hair, “I’ll always be here”. I nod as William holds me in his arms. Feeling his heart racing rapidly, I pull him closer to me. I try to relax but all I feel is discomfort. Maybe it’s the way I’m positioned…so I snuggle closer to him as I try to get comfortable. “I’ll give you two some privacy” Doctor Mehmet excuses himself and walks out the room. Now I’m all alone in this room with my soon-to-be husband. It would be perfect if he were my mate but he isn’t. But I did agree to this marriage and that means giving this relationship a try. “Can you stay with me tonight?” I ask him quietly. “Of course” he says excitedly. I scoot over and make room for him to lay down with me. Still holding me, he climbs up and gently lays me in bed. “How’s Austin and Tim?” I ask him. “Austin’s fine” he says, “And Tim will be okay”. I nod and close my eyes. At least they made it home safely. I feel him putting his hand under my head so I turn to drape my arm around his torso. He stifles a growl as I laugh a little. He pulls me closer to him as I lay my head on his chest. I guess being married to him won’t be so bad, I tell my wolf Amora. Yeah, She says sadly, I just wish it could have been with our destined mate. Me too, I tell her. Hours Later— 4:37am I wake up alone on my hospital bed. I scan the room for William but see no sign of him. I turn to check the time when I hear someone at the door. “The a*sh**e made me watch his fiancé while he’s off with you know-who” a grumpy male voice says. “Shhh! She’ll hear us!” A woman says, “I don’t need for her to make a scene”. “No need. He had her magically sedated” the grumpy man says, “She’ll be out till her wedding” “What a-“ “All so he can be with his mistress” the grumpy man huffs. “Typical Davidson men” the woman scoffs now, “Like father like son”. “You’re right” the grumpy man laughs, “Even with his wedding tomorrow, the jerk will never truly commit”. “Poor girl” the woman says, “Hopefully he doesn’t have to many bastard children like his dad”. They start laughing as I lay there motionless. My head spinning from everything I just heard. Was it possible that William…was having an affair already?! We weren’t even married and he was already cheating! And what did they mean, like father like son?! I feel the IV in my arm and see a red rash spreading. Whatever magic they pumped me full of, was obviously not working. On a regular wolf it might have but I wasn’t a regular wolf. Holding my palm above the wound, I begin to heal myself. Sana hoc vulnus The magic slowly leaves my body and evaporates into the air. Within a few minutes, the magic will completely disappear. As I lay in bed I contemplate my next move. Do I marry him or go back on my word? Or do I confront him? Do I ask him if all that was said is completely true? The coldness from the air doesn’t help as I start to feel it in my bones. Every part of my body aches as I think of that fact that my wedding day is today. What do I do?!
