Chapter 10

*NICHOLAS P.O.V* After Alpha Harrington received his daughter’s blood results, he kicked everyone out of his territory. Including us and Alpha William’s injured guards. It was a ballsy move that honestly surprised me. Everything about this Alpha was admirable and I knew I needed his alliance. We complied and left Midnight Stone within an hour. Thanks to Luna Catalina, I was able to move James via an ambulance. The magical hex was slowly wearing off which meant that he would start to regain his health. I wasn’t too worried about him though, I had other things on my mind. “You should rest before we head out tomorrow morning” Winston says as we head inside our home. The guards made sure to wheel James into a private medical room. “You’re not coming” I remind him, “You have to be at that wedding tomorrow”. “Why? Mom and James are going” He says annoyed, “So will Aunt Regina”. “Winston-“ “I’m going” He says trying to have the final word. He hurries on upstairs so I’m forced to accept his company. “I mean it Winston” I shout in vain. Heading upstairs, I see a dim light coming from inside father’s office. It’s well past midnight for him to still be awake. As I approach his office I hear my aunts voice, as well as councilman Hugo Avet. He was the only council member we really trusted. Unfortunately for me, he was nearing retirement. Everyone on the council wanted his retirement and every aging Alpha wanted his seat. It just a matter of time before they oust him and we all knew it. “You want appear strong on this matter, Fred” Hugo says, “Soon it’ll be Nick’s problem”. “We won’t have to worry” Dad says with a slight cough, “Nick will catch this hybrid criminal within his first year in power”. “Let’s hope” Aunt Regina scoffs, “Are we sure he’s ready?” “I’m ready” I say as I enter the office. Due to the royals super hearing, no one but Hugo is surprised to see me. “How are you Nick?” Hugo says with a smile. He turns his surprised face into one of delight. The old man was more like an uncle to me. “I’m well, thank you for asking” I tell him. Turning my attention to my aunt, “I’m more than ready”. “Well” Aunt Regina starts, “You have to meet with the council members and agree to catch this guy-“ “The elite force has been formed” Hugo says interrupting Regina, “They’re just awaiting the King’s orders”. “Call the council members and neighboring Alphas” Dad says, “I’ll do this tomorrow”. “Very well” Hugo says, “I’m sure they’ll want to hear it from Nick as well”. “I already have plans for tomorrow” I say to all of them, “I’ll just sign whatever documents you need before I leave”. “What’s more important than meeting with the council members?” My aunt Regina says dryly. “I have somewhere to be” Is all I say before leaving. I didn’t need to hear another lecture…not after tonight. All I needed was a hot shower and a well-rested sleep. Even as I’m far away from his office, I can hear my aunt’s vile words towards me knowing well I can still hear her. A Couple Of Hours Later… “The wedding starts at 4pm” Arielle says at the breakfast table. She looks gleefully at James, who’s made a fast recovery. “Great” he says in a sarcastic tone, “Couldn’t bare to miss the wedding”. “I wonder if I’ll get to wear-“ “You’re not going Ellie” I interrupt and stare straight at her, “You’ll be staying home with dad”. She opens her mouth to protest but in walks Aunt Regina who interrupts by sitting with us. “Good morning kids” She says with a smirk, “I hope you all had a good night’s sleep”. Nobody says anything as we sit in silence. James rolls his eyes as he takes a sip of coffee while Arielle avoids looking at her mother. Her and Aunt Regina have had a difficult relationship lately. Every time I try to ask Arielle about it, she gives me vague answers or tries to change the topic. “I for one cannot wait to show our support for Alpha William and his wife” Aunt Regina says trying to provoke me. I notice the tiniest smirk on her face which was my cue to leave. She was doing this on purpose, trying to get a reaction out of me. She would always point out my flaws…like she was waiting for me to fail. I leave without saying goodbye and head outside where commander Reagan and Winston are waiting for me. “Ready Sir?” Reagan asks me while handing me my bag. “Yes” I tell him and turn to face Winston, “Don’t do anything stupid”. It was a quiet helicopter ride out West when we finally land. The packs that’s we were visiting were notified to keep it a secret. I didn’t need an assassination attempt or worse…a welcoming party. “Crown Prince” Alpha Jackson bows as he greet me. “Alpha Jackson” I say extending my hand, “It’s nice to meet you”. “Good morning” He says to Winston and Reagan, “It’s nice to meet the rest of the princes”. “I’m not a prince” Reagan says, “I’m the commander of the royal guard”. “Sorry about that” He says, “We just never expected the Royals to ever visit us”. He says the last part with a hint of suspicion as he tries not to look nervous. He motions for us to follow him and I notice his beta and gamma waiting for us inside. “This is my Beta” He points at the guy on the left, “George Fraizer and his family”. They bow and I go over to greet them. A family of five, consisting of him, his wife, their two sons and a daughter. “This is my Gamma” he points to the man on right, “Carlos Montero”. A man of medium build bows to greet me. I notice his daughters and pregnant wife standing besides him. “It’s a pleasure to host you Crown Prince” the gamma says. “I’m happy to be here” I say honestly. Alpha Jackson leads us into his study where I see his family waiting for us. A black-haired woman with two daughters on both sides of her. They reluctantly bow as I enter. “So, what brings you out West?” Alpha Jackson says, getting straight to the point. “As you know my father, King Fredrick, is handing me the royal title soon. I find that it’s my duty to-“ “When is the ceremony?” Alpha Jackson interrupts. I’m taken aback a bit but I don’t say anything, “The date is to be announced. As I was saying, I-“ “The royal family has never been this far out west” Alpha Jackson continues, “I’m surprised you found your way”. His sarcasm doesn’t sit well with me but I let it slide. I’m sure he has his reasons for being like this. “I hope it’s to your liking. I know it’s not what you’re used to” He finishes saying. Neither his beta nor gamma react as I smile at them. “You’re confusing me for my father and grandfathers” I say firmly, “I’m neither them nor the rumors, I’m here to talk about-“ “We had sent a memo asking for help with the rogues and it went unanswered for many years” Beta George says with a slight resentment in his tone, “We almost died during one of the attacks”. “I’m sorry-“ “Can you change how Alpha titles are transferred?” The Alpha’s oldest daughter speaks out, “It’s unfair how Alpha males get to rule their packs when us women aren’t allowed”. Her and her sister cross their arms while glaring at us, me in particular. “Look” I say to all of them, “I know the royal family isn’t everyone’s favorite but I can’t change the past. Going forward I’ll being making new laws that will affect all of us. Including rogues”. “Rogues aren’t an issue for us anymore” Gamma Carlos says, “Alpha William of Silver Crescent Moon helped us out”. Keeping my wolf at bay, I exhale as I try to relax. Alpha William was definitely plotting something. He didn’t just lend his help if there wasn’t something in it for him. But I wasn’t one to accuse someone without proof. “We didn’t receive any letters asking for help” Winston says, “It’s not in our records”. “We sent over ten memos” Alpha Jackson responds, “Each one went unanswered”. Winston tries to respond again but I speak before he’s able to, “Forgive us for not responding and I’m sorry we didn’t give you guys the proper help you needed. All I ask is that you give me another chance to prove myself”. They all look at each other as they eye me suspiciously. The Alpha’s daughters seem to relax once their dad nods at them. I wait patiently for their response as they all seem to relax. While their chests aren’t out anymore, the tension was still high. “Thank you” Alpha Jackson finally says, “That’s all we ever wanted to hear. The royals taking responsibility for their failures”. Ouch, I had to admit that hurt a little. I took my father’s failures personal as I would inherit his unpopular image. “That being said, you can’t forget what you just said” Alpha Jackson says trying to scold me like a child, “You have to be true in wanting change”. “I am Alpha Jackson” The rest of the day goes all the same. Alphas telling me the mistakes that the Royal family has done. How negligent we’ve been on certain matters and how scared people are. Everything I’ve done in the past was coming back to haunt me as well. My image, my reputation, my mistakes, were coming back around. Somehow, it all ends up back to my father handing over the title to me. Wolves were unsure about me being the new king. The only thing that assured them were the rumors of my engagement. “People are scared of you being the new King” Winston jokes, “I can sense how uncertain they are of you”. I rub my chest as a small pang of pain starts to spread throughout it. The same annoying feeling I got yesterday. Only this time, it started to hurt more. “Are you okay?” Winston asks as he watches me massage my left side. “It’s weird” I tell him, “It’s as if something was happening. Like something was being taken away from me”. “Should we get you to a doctor?” He asks nervously. I shake my head, “Let’s just go somewhere to eat”. We get into the rental car, as I sit alone in the backseat. “There’s a city nearby” Reagan says as he starts driving, “We can eat before going to the last pack”. “Great” I say through the pain. It was only intensifying as the minute went by. “James had texted me” Winston tells us, “Apparently, the wedding is delayed”. “Why?” I say as I continue to rub my chest, “What happened?”. “The Alpha’s mother isn’t ready” Winston says with a laughter, “Looks like the wedding hasn’t begun”. I look down at my phone and how it’s already 5pm, “Is she trying to stop her son’s wedding?”. “No, he says it’ll still happen” Winston says without looking up from his phone. “Poor girl” Reagan says, “If he’s anything like his father, she’s feel the pain every time he cheats”. I nod as I take deep breaths and relax in place. Even Roman, my wolf, was uneasy. Something was off. Neither one of us could explain it. “What’s happening to you?” Winston asks, “You look pale”. “I’m fine” I lie as I lay down on the backseat. I start to feel dizzy as I try to look up at Winston. Soon, black spots start to take over my vision as I feel myself slipping into unconsciousness. Hours Laters… Blinking around, I see I’m still in the backseat. Alone. Neither Winston or Reagan are here. I sit up and see the the time on my cellphone. 10pm. Dialing my brother, I wondered what happened to me. First the chest pains and then passing out. “Where are you?” I say once Winston picks up. “Leaving the Seaside Wolves territory” Winston says, “We had to leave you but-“ “How did you guys even get there?” “Another rental car” Winston says, “We parked the car your in, inside a garage”. Hearing them laugh annoyed me more than being left inside a parking garage. “Get here quick!” I growl into the phone and end the call. I lay back down and try to catch my breath. I couldn’t wait for this day to be over. Suddenly, two separate footsteps enter the garage. From the heaviness of the walking, I can tell it’s a man and a woman. “I can sense him” the woman says, “He’s here”. “We should leave” the man tells her, “He can’t help us anyways”. “So you want to submit to that mutt!” the woman angrily says back, “I won’t be the servant to some Alpha mutt!”. “He won’t help us either way” the man assures her, “Those royals have never helped anyone”. “Well let’s find out” The woman says as they walk to the car I’m in. Still feeling uneasy, I prepare for an attack. They slowly circle the car as I’m getting ready to open the car door. Don’t harm them, My wolf Roman warns me. Apertus, the car door flies open and I come face-to-face with the witch and sorcerer. Woman was a bit of an overstatement for her. She looks younger than I thought. Her blond hair braided to the side while her grey eyes stare intently at me. The man behind her begins to chant another spell when we hear a clear and possessive growl. “MATE”
