Chapter 1: Olivia Cassidy
The late afternoon sunlight slanted through the dusty windows of Westbridge Senior High, turning the classroom into a hazy gold. The chatter of classmates filled the air and some reviewing notes for tomorrow’s quiz, others already gossiping about weekend plans. And then there was him. Seth Millers. Even in a room buzzing with energy, he looked like he belonged to another world. He was slouched comfortably in his chair, arms crossed, eyes closed, completely oblivious to the noise. His tie was loosened, his blazer hung casually over his chair, and strands of his dark hair fell across his forehead in a way that looked careless yet perfect. The boy was sleeping again. Of course. I caught myself staring yet again, and quickly shifted my gaze to my notebook, pretending to reread my doodles. My pen had drawn another set of squiggly lines across the margin, the result of me stealing glances at him every few minutes. Seth wasn’t just handsome. He was brilliant. The kind of brilliant that made teachers sigh in relief because at least someone understood their lectures, even when half the class was still scrambling to grasp the basics. He was top of our year, unbeatable in math and science, and annoyingly, he never seemed to try. Some people worked their brains out to stay in the top ten. Seth? He napped through lessons, forgot to turn in homework sometimes, and still aced every exam. It was unfair. Maddening. Infuriating. And completely attractive. “Olivia,” Claire whispered, nudging me with her elbow. “You’re staring again.” “I’m not!” I hissed, snapping my notebook shut. Claire raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. She was my best friend, the kind of best friend who knew exactly what was in my head before I did. Her grin was teasing, her eyes sharp. “Your eyes say otherwise.” I puffed my cheeks in frustration. “I was just… observing.” “Observing, huh?” she said, dragging out the word. “Right. Observing the way his eyelashes are freakishly long for a guy?” I groaned, covering my face with my hands. “Why am I even friends with you?” “Because I keep your secrets,” Claire replied smugly. “Including the fact that you’ve been in love with Seth Millers since freshman year.” “Shhh!” I panicked, glancing around. Thankfully, no one seemed to hear us. Still, my heart pounded so hard it felt like the whole class could. The truth was, Claire was right. From the moment I saw Seth three years ago, casually solving a calculus problem on the board like it was nothing, I’d been hooked. He wasn’t the type to charm people with words or flashy smiles. He was quiet, distant even. But there was something magnetic about his aloofness, the way he seemed untouchable, unreachable. I’d admired him in silence ever since. “Olivia Cassidy,” Claire sang softly, tapping her pencil against my desk, “when are you going to confess? You’ve been drooling over him for years.” I felt my face heat. “I’m not drooling.” “You’re practically a faucet.” I smacked her arm, but she only giggled. The truth was, the thought of confessing to Seth terrified me. He was on a different level, his too smart, too cool, too everything. And me? I was… well, average. I wasn’t the prettiest girl in class, though people sometimes said I was “cute.” I wasn’t the smartest either, though I did okay. I was just Olivia Cassidy, a normal seventeen year old who liked drawing, daydreaming, and occasionally baking cookies. Compared to Seth, I was ordinary in every way. Still, my heart refused to listen to reason. Every time I saw him napping with that peaceful face, answering questions with ease, walking down the hallway like he didn’t notice the stares, my chest fluttered like it was trying to take flight. I wanted to be close to him. To know what he was thinking when his eyes grew distant. To see if he ever cared about anything beyond grades and naps. Most of all, I wanted to know if he could ever care about me. “Earth to Olivia,” Claire said, snapping her fingers in front of my face. “You zoned out again.” “Sorry,” I muttered. She sighed. “Seriously, girl. Graduation is less than a year away. If you don’t make a move now, you’ll regret it forever.” Her words struck a chord. She wasn’t wrong. Time was slipping away faster than I wanted to admit. I glanced at Seth again. He was still asleep, oblivious to the world. His chest rose and fell steadily, his lips curved slightly, not into a smile exactly, but something softer, almost content. And just like that, the thought slipped into my mind uninvited. Maybe I should confess. The idea terrified me, but it also made my pulse quicken with a strange kind of hope. What if… just what if… he said yes? I imagined it for a moment, Seth agreeing, his calm voice saying “Yes,” the two of us walking home together, sitting under the cherry blossoms in spring, maybe even holding hands. The thought made my stomach swirl like butterflies had taken over. Then reality crashed in. He’d probably laugh. Or worse, look at me with that indifferent expression, shrug, and say something like, “I don’t care.” The bell rang, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Finally!” Claire stretched her arms. “I’m starving. Let’s go grab some snacks.” “You go ahead,” I said. Her eyebrows lifted. “Oh? Planning something?” “Nothing,” I lied quickly. Claire narrowed her eyes, clearly not convinced, but she didn’t press. “Fine. Don’t chicken out, Cassidy.” With a wink, she headed out with a few classmates. The classroom emptied gradually, students leaving in pairs and groups. Laughter and footsteps echoed down the hall until only a handful of us were left. And Seth. Still asleep. I stared at him, my heart pounding louder with each second. This was my chance. If I was ever going to say it, maybe now was the time. I gripped the edge of my desk so tightly my knuckles turned white. My legs trembled as I stood, each step toward him heavy like I was walking through water. He looked so peaceful. His head tilted slightly, lips parted just enough to make him look… vulnerable. I swallowed hard. “Um… Seth?” My voice came out small. No response. I cleared my throat. “Seth.” His eyes opened slowly, lazily, as if waking up was the hardest task in the world. He blinked once, twice, then looked at me. I froze. Those eyes deep, dark, and unreadable met mine, and my words tangled in my throat. “…Cassidy?” His voice was low, calm. He rubbed the back of his neck. “What is it?” My heart hammered. My palms were sweaty. This was it. But my lips refused to move. Say it. “I… uh…” I stammered, heat rushing to my cheeks. “Nothing. Sorry. I just thought you might want to… um… wake up before the janitor kicks you out.” Smooth. Real smooth. He yawned, stretching like a lazy cat. “Mm. Thanks.” Without another word, he stood, grabbed his blazer, and walked past me toward the door. I stood frozen, my courage crumbling like paper. The moment was gone. But as he passed, his arm brushed lightly against mine an accident, probably. Still, the contact made my entire body jolt like I’d been struck by lightning. And for a fleeting second, I swore his lips quirked into the faintest smile. “See you tomorrow,” he said casually, before disappearing down the hall. My knees nearly gave out. Did that just happen? Did Seth Millers the genius, top student, hopeless napper just smile at me? My heart was a mess, my thoughts tangled, but one thing was certain. I couldn’t keep this secret forever. One way or another, I had to tell him. And soon.
