The Ruins Beneath the Ashes
The world had forgotten the name Aurelian.
But the ashes remembered.
For a thousand years, the ruins of the ancient empire had remained buried beneath the endless winds of the Ashen Wastes. Towers that once touched the heavens had collapsed into mountains of stone. Golden halls where kings once held court had become graves for the forgotten.
No banners flew there.
No songs were sung there.
Only the wind remained.
And the wind whispered of a crown that should never be found.
Kael Veyron had never believed in legends.
Legends were stories told by old men sitting beside dying fires. They were excuses people created to explain things they could not understand.
A monster in the forest?
A curse on a village?
A lost kingdom beneath the earth?
People always needed something to blame.
Kael had learned that truth was much simpler.
The world was cruel because people were cruel.
That was all.
He tightened the cloth around his injured hand as he walked through the ruins of an abandoned settlement. The cold wind cut through his worn cloak, carrying dust and ash across the empty streets.
Once, people had lived here.
Now only bones remained.
Kael stepped over a broken sword buried in the sand.
A reminder.
Everything eventually fell.
Kingdoms.
Empires.
Men.
He looked toward the horizon where dark clouds gathered above the Ashen Wastes.
"Bad weather," he muttered.
The only response was silence.
Kael had spent most of his life surrounded by silence.
He was an orphan with no family name, no inheritance, and no place in the world. The small village that raised him had given him a home, but never answers.
He had always wondered why he remembered nothing before the age of six.
No parents.
No childhood.
No memories.
Only a strange mark on his hand that appeared the day he was found.
The villagers called it a birthmark.
The village elder called it something else.
A warning.
Three days ago, everything changed.
A group of armed men arrived at his village.
They weren't soldiers.
They weren't bandits.
They moved like hunters searching for prey.
Their leader had one question.
"Where is the boy with the silver eyes?"
Kael had never understood what they meant.
Until they found him.
The attack lasted less than an hour.
The village burned.
People died.
And before Kael escaped, he saw something carved into the armor of their leader.
A symbol.
A black crown split in half.
The same symbol that appeared in his dreams.
The ruins ahead were different from the others.
Kael stopped walking.
A massive stone gate stood buried beneath the sand.
Impossible.
He had crossed this area many times before, but he had never seen it.
The gate was covered by ancient symbols glowing faintly beneath the surface.
Kael approached slowly.
His instincts screamed at him to leave.
But something pulled him forward.
A feeling he couldn't explain.
Like something beneath the earth knew he was there.
He placed his hand against the stone.
The moment his skin touched the gate, the world changed.
Pain exploded through his body.
Kael fell to his knees.
Images flooded his mind.
A battlefield.
Thousands of soldiers screaming.
A burning city.
A man wearing a crown made of black metal standing above the destruction.
The man's eyes were the same as his.
Silver.
"You have returned..."
A voice echoed through his thoughts.
Kael gasped and pulled away.
The vision disappeared.
The gate began to open.
Deep beneath the ruins, something awakened.
For centuries, it had waited.
For centuries, it had slept.
Ancient mechanisms moved beneath the earth as the forgotten tomb opened for the first time in a thousand years.
Kael stared into the darkness beyond the gate.
He should have walked away.
Every part of him knew that.
But curiosity was stronger than fear.
He stepped inside.
The passage was massive.
The walls were decorated with carvings of kings, warriors, and battles forgotten by history.
At the end of the hall stood a throne.
Empty.
Waiting.
Behind the throne was a stone pedestal.
And resting upon it was a crown.
Kael froze.
The object before him was unlike anything he had ever seen.
It was not beautiful.
It was not decorated with jewels.
It looked like something created from the remains of a dying star.
Black metal.
Sharp edges.
A presence that made the air feel heavier.
The Hollow Crown.
Kael did not know how he knew its name.
But he did.
The moment he saw it, his heart whispered the truth.
This belonged to him.
"No..."
He stepped backward.
"I don't want this."
The crown remained silent.
Then a voice answered.
"You do not choose the crown."
The torches along the walls ignited.
One by one.
"The crown chooses its king."
Kael's breathing stopped.
A figure appeared beside the throne.
An old man wearing ancient royal armor.
A ghost.
A memory.
"You are not ready," the figure said.
Kael raised his fists.
"Who are you?"
The ghost looked at him with sadness.
"I was the last king of Aurelian."
The room shook.
"My name was Vaelor Aurelian."
Kael stared.
Impossible.
The last emperor had died a thousand years ago.
"You are lying."
The ghost smiled faintly.
"That is what I told myself before I destroyed everything."
The words carried regret.
"The crown gave me power. It gave me knowledge. It gave me the strength to protect my people."
His expression darkened.
"But power without wisdom becomes destruction."
Kael looked at the crown.
"Why show me this?"
The ghost stepped closer.
"Because the world believes the Hollow Crown creates monsters."
A pause.
"But the truth is..."
The ghost looked directly into Kael's eyes.
"The crown only reveals what already exists inside a person."
Kael felt a chill.
"What does it want from me?"
The answer came immediately.
"Everything."
A sudden sound interrupted them.
Footsteps.
Someone else was inside the ruins.
Kael turned.
The entrance behind him was blocked by shadows.
Then a voice echoed through the hall.
"We finally found you."
Kael's blood turned cold.
The hunters.
Several figures stepped into the chamber wearing black armor.
The symbol of the broken crown was painted across their chests.
Their leader smiled.
"The lost heir of Aurelian."
Kael clenched his fists.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
The hunter laughed.
"You will."
He looked toward the pedestal.
"And when you put on that crown, the world will finally burn again."
Kael looked at the Hollow Crown.
Then at the armed men surrounding him.
He had spent his entire life running from a past he couldn't remember.
But now his past had found him.
The crown waited.
The hunters approached.
And deep within the ruins of the fallen empire...
something ancient opened its eyes.
The age of ashes had ended.
The age of the Hollow Crown had begun.
To be continued...
