Nicole's POV I woke up and blinked hesitantly as the lights burned my eyes some. I turned my head slightly. “Hey. you're awake!” I heard the same strong voice from before. I looked towards the voice and met the most piercing gray eyes. I remember those eyes. They belonged to the same guy who found me at the river. I tried to sit up but the pain shot through me. I grimaced. “Woah. woah. Easy now. Here let me help you.” he said. As he reached over to me I flinched away. Mate or not he is a stranger to me. I have been a prisoner all my life and I will not go back to that again. I saw him cringe a bit at my reaction towards him. He moved back and watched me closely. I slowly pushed myself upright on the bed. I leaned back against the headboard. I swallowed hard but it felt like my mouth was full of cotton. As if reading my mind a glass of water was placed on the table next to me. Hmm so he’s no longer going to reach near me. Someone learns fast. I cautiously picked up the cup and took small sips. I couldn't stop the moan that escaped my lips. Who knew water could taste so good. He chuckled and kept watching me closely. I placed the cup back down and started to play with my fingers. “How do you feel?” he asked me. I stayed quiet for a while. “I feel fine.” my voice was no louder than a whisper. I wouldnt believe I said anything myself if it wasn't for the fact they were my own words. He nodded and looked down at the bed. We stayed in silence for a long period of time. “Where am I?” I asked him. He looked up at me and shrugged his shoulders as he responded. “Well currently you are in the hospital of the Red River Pack”. “Oh” “What do you last remember?” I looked away and my face contorted trying to remember all the details. How much do I even want to share? “I fell into the river. You found me”. A small smile grew on his face. He looked proud. Ugh men. I went back to my eyes down and my fingers picking at my skin. “Can you tell me about yourself?” he asked me. Shit. Here we go. I closed my eyes and tried to calm my mind. If he finds out the truth I will be back in the same hell ridden torture like before. “Hey, I am sorry. I don't mean to rush things. I get it. You don't know me.” He said with a slight chuckle. I would assume he's just trying to break the ice. “My name is Nicole” I whispered just for his ears. He smiled and repeated my name. “Nicole. That is really pretty. My name is Jake. I am the alpha of this pack”. I nodded, avoiding all eye contact. Just another power hungry alpha. Joy. “Can you tell me how you ended up in the river?” he asked me. I looked up at him slightly. He watched me intently but his eyes showed no signs of anger or hatred. “I… I jumped…” I lied to him. He sat in silence before looking down at his hands. His eyes never came up to look at me while he spoke but his words shook me to my core. “Nicole, I know you didn't jump. No one would have jumped into that river. It is too dangerous at this time of year. I also know that you have wounds that are many years old.” I swallowed the lump in my throat. He let out a long sigh and rubbed his hand down his face. “Brick by brick I guess. Those walls you built up are awfully high though”. I sank down into the bed. I wish I could hide away in a hole. Yes I put those walls up but I will not be letting anyone in. Not again. And there is no way in hell I am bringing up my wolf. As of now I will just be a human. As we sat in silence as the minutes passed. Soon the silence was broken by the rumbling of my stomach. Damn I was so hungry. My eyes got big at the loud sound before placing my hands on my stomach. I heard him laugh. It wasn't a quiet, shy laugh either. One of those truly funny deep belly laughs. It was kind of cute… NO! Come on Nicole dont think like that! I felt my face heat up and I tried to cover it. He cleared his throat and tried to control his laughter. “I would ask if you want food but I think your stomach already answered that”, he said to me. I just nodded and kept my hands over my stomach. “Well you can't get outta bed with your injuries yet so why don't I go grab you some food and bring it here instead?” “Alright…” I responded. He nodded with a small smile before walking out of the hospital room.
