Chapter Five — The Things People Leave Behind

LOVE HOUSE: SECOND CHANCE --------------------------------- The house felt different the next morning. Too quiet. Too careful. Like everyone had suddenly remembered the cameras were real. Minwoo stood alone in the kitchen staring at the coffee machine like it personally offended him. He hadn’t slept properly. Not after Seojun. Not after Jaehyun’s words in the garden. You don’t have to pretend with me. That sentence had followed him all night. Which was annoying. Because Minwoo preferred problems he could ignore. Footsteps entered behind him. He already knew who it was. “You hover loudly,” Minwoo muttered. Jaehyun opened the fridge calmly. “You’re awake early.” “I blame emotional damage.” “That narrows nothing down.” Minwoo almost smiled. Almost. Jaehyun glanced at him briefly. “You didn’t sleep.” “You say that like you did.” “I didn’t.” “That’s less comforting than you think.” For a moment, things felt normal again. Then another voice entered the kitchen. “Still drinking coffee you hate?” Minwoo’s entire body stiffened. Seojun. Of course. Jaehyun quietly closed the fridge door. The tension changed instantly. Seojun leaned casually against the counter like he belonged there. Like he hadn’t detonated the entire atmosphere yesterday. Minwoo kept his voice flat. “What do you want?” Seojun tilted his head. “Breakfast. Maybe forgiveness. I’m flexible.” Jaehyun’s expression didn’t change. But Minwoo noticed the way his shoulders straightened slightly. Defensive. Again. That dangerous warmth spread through Minwoo’s chest before he could stop it. Seojun noticed too. And smiled faintly. “Wow,” he murmured. “You really got attached fast.” Minwoo’s jaw tightened. Jaehyun spoke before he could. “You seem very interested in provoking people.” Seojun shrugged. “Only when they react.” Minwoo finally turned fully toward him. “You disappeared for six months.” The room went still. Seojun’s smile faded just slightly. Minwoo continued quietly. “No calls. No explanation. Nothing.” Jaehyun stayed silent beside him. Listening. Seojun exhaled slowly. “I know.” “No,” Minwoo replied. “I don’t think you do.” For the first time since arriving, Seojun looked uncertain. Just for a second. Then the speaker system suddenly turned on. “Good morning, contestants!” Everyone in the kitchen flinched. The host sounded far too cheerful. “Today’s mission will focus on emotional honesty.” Minwoo groaned immediately. “I want legal representation.” The host ignored him. “Today, each contestant will receive a box containing items connected to their past.” The room froze. Minwoo frowned. “Absolutely not.” “You must choose one item,” the host continued, “and explain its meaning during tonight’s sharing session.” Jaehyun sighed softly. Seojun actually laughed. “This show gets more unethical every day.” “Correct,” Minwoo said immediately. The Boxes By afternoon, eight black boxes sat in the center of the living room. Everyone looked nervous. Even the people pretending not to be. Production assistants stood nearby with cameras ready. Predators waiting for emotional collapse. Minwoo hated all of them. The host smiled brightly. “Open your boxes.” One by one, contestants lifted the lids. The room filled with quiet reactions. Photos. Letters. Old gifts. Concert tickets. Pieces of lives people thought they had escaped. Minwoo slowly opened his box. Then stopped breathing. Inside was a silver lighter. Small. Scratched at the edges. Seojun noticed instantly from across the room. His expression changed. Jaehyun looked between them carefully. Minwoo picked it up slowly. Like touching a ghost. “You still kept that?” Seojun asked quietly. Minwoo laughed once under his breath. “No,” he said. “You left it behind.” Silence. Jaehyun’s eyes shifted to the lighter. Minwoo turned it over in his hand. Memories hit too fast. Rainy streets. Shared hoodies. Fights at 2AM. Promises that sounded permanent. Then nothing. He hated that a tiny object could still hurt this much. Across from him, Jaehyun opened his own box. Inside was a folded wedding invitation. The entire room noticed. But Jaehyun barely reacted. Minwoo stared before he could stop himself. Jaehyun calmly unfolded it once. Then folded it again. Like handling something already dead. The host’s voice softened slightly. “Tonight, you’ll explain what these items mean to you.” Minwoo whispered, “I’m leaving the country.” “No you’re not,” Jaehyun replied automatically. Seojun looked between them again. And this time— something unreadable crossed his face. Night — The Sharing Session ------------------------------- The contestants sat in a circle under soft studio lights. The atmosphere felt heavier than any mission before. No games. No flirting. Just old wounds waiting to reopen. One by one, people shared their items. Some cried. Some laughed awkwardly. Some lied. Minwoo noticed that too. Then it became Jaehyun’s turn. The room quieted immediately. Jaehyun held the invitation carefully. “She designed these herself,” he said calmly. Minwoo looked at him. “She liked details,” Jaehyun continued. “Everything had to mean something.” A small pause. “She left three weeks before the wedding.” No one interrupted. Jaehyun smiled slightly. But it didn’t reach his eyes. “At first, I kept wondering what I did wrong.” The room stayed silent. “Then eventually,” he said softly, “I realized being abandoned doesn’t always mean you failed.” Minwoo felt something tighten painfully in his chest. Because Jaehyun wasn’t only talking about himself anymore. He glanced toward Minwoo for one brief second. And Minwoo understood anyway. The host finally whispered, “Thank you.” Then— “Minwoo.” Damn it. Minwoo stared at the lighter in his hands. Everyone waited. Even Seojun looked nervous now. Good. Minwoo leaned back slowly. “This belonged to someone who promised he’d stay.” The silence became suffocating. Minwoo smiled faintly. “He said forever a lot.” To be continue ---------------
