Chapter Four

Chapter four. Paige's Point of View ‘Careful.’ My wolf Madison cautioned. “You’re not going to be able to reason with him like you usually do.’ “I’ve got to try something Madz. Or we’ll lose the best Doctor we’ve got!’ “Lennox,” I called over, keeping my voice even despite being slightly terrified. In all my time with Jacob, he had never once let his wolf take full control without his prior permission. The mate bond was clearly strong enough to break even the toughest Alpha. “If you want Aria to make a full recovery, then it’s probably not wise to murder our head of neurology.” The way his expression softened when I said his mate's name made me feel physically sick. Jacob’s face was one of adoration and his wolf was ready to kill anyone who didn’t do exactly as he ordered. Lennox loosened his grip a fraction of an inch, but it was enough to prevent him from crushing the Doctor’s windpipe. “My mate and I don’t want you here.” Lennox spat. His fangs glistened in the dull hospital light. “I completely understand that.” I lied. “But I’m here to help and make sure that Jacob gets all the help he needs from the medical staff.” Lennox tilted his head to one side. “You won’t harm my mate.” It wasn’t a question, it was a demand. “You have my word. And although I’m not your fated mate, you have always been able to trust me, haven’t you?” Lennox said nothing. “You need to give control back to Jacob. He is better equipped to handle this than you are. I will make sure that the doctors here order every single test that the Alpha has asked for.” Finally, he opened his fist and Clark dropped to the floor. His face was puce and he was coughing enough to hack up a lung. But at least he’d survived. Luckily, it looked like the lack of oxygen hadn’t caused any brain damage either which was a minor miracle. Lennox glared at me for almost a full minute, before nodding once. My husband's blue eyes started to bleed through into the blackness, and my husband was back in the room. I wanted to run to him. I wanted to check every inch of his body to make sure he hadn’t sustained an injury himself. I wanted to hold him in my arms and feel his heart beating against mine. But he wouldn’t want that. He had hated public shows of affection before Aria turned up, so he certainly wouldn’t be in the mood for it now. Instead, I simply gazed at him with tears in my eyes, hoping to the Moon Goddess that they didn’t spill out over my cheeks. “Thank you.” Jacob said stiffly. “You’ve always been good at talking him down.” He turned away from me and walked into Aria’s room without another word. Maddison howled in pain. Was that the best that we were ever going to get? A small begrudging crumb of acknowledgment.? I made my way over to Doctor Clark and helped him off of the floor. “Thank you Luna.” He wheezed. “You’re welcome. Now, I know you don’t think that this Omega needs the tests that have been ordered, but, for your own safety, I suggest you carry them out twice.” “As you wish Luna. But he won’t let me anywhere near her. If he wants these tests she’s going to have to go to the next floor.” His comment made my insides ache, but I rallied and managed to come up with a Luna-like answer. “Doctor Clark, you’re a wolf, not a puny human. The machines clearly need to be moved down to this floor. Roll up your sleeves and get on with it.” “Luna, I’m not sure if we can fit the machines—” Jacob stepped back into the hall. “Clark, I don’t care if you have to smash half the f*****g building apart, Blast a f*****g hole in the floor if needed, but you will get those machines moved.” The Doctor’s head hung low and heavy as the Alpha command bore its full weight upon his neck. It took a few seconds before he was able to move. “Use your wolf speed.” Jacob barked. “Unless you don’t consider breathing to be necessary for your life expectancy.” Clark ran the length of the corridor and pushed through the door like someone had stuck a rocket up his ass. Jacob and I looked at each other. ‘Please say something to me’ I thought as I stood waiting for what would come next. ‘Tell me you love me’ But Jacob had nothing to say. His expression was one of boredom and I could almost see the mate bond physically trying to pull him back towards the hospital bed. Seconds later, Jacob’s features re-arranged themselves into an impatient glower. For a split second I was confused, until it dawned on me that he was waiting for me to leave. He read the recognition on my face. “It’s not personal,” he said, as I tried and failed to hold in a snort of contempt. He ignored it. “As Luna you need to make plans to strengthen the borders whilst I am absent.” A sudden quick succession of beeps came from inside Aria’s room. A look of panic crossed his beautiful features and Jacob moved like lightning back to the bedside of his fated mate. I took a few steps forward and craned my neck to see what was going on. “What happened?” He asked someone in the room. “I told you to watch for the smallest of changes. Why is the machine beeping like that?" Jacob sounded borderline hysterical. Like he was about to lose the most precious thing on this earth. “Alpha, everything is fine, I promise.” I recognized the voice. Dr Perez was our cardio specialist. He had obviously ordered her to stay glued to the heat monitor. “The machine is telling us that your mate is waking up. It’s simply notifying us that there is an increase in her heart beat. This is good news.” I watched as Jacob sagged with relief. He bent double with his hands on his knees. Dr Perez gave his back a soothing pat. “You can relax, Alpha, it won’t be much longer.” “Thank you. But I won’t be able to relax until she is safely in my arms.” I watched as he placed his right hand on her forehead and stroked his thumb tenderly against it. He linked his fingers from his left hand through hers. “Aria, come back to me my love” I couldn’t help it. A small sob escaped the back of my throat. Jacob’s back stiffened as he remembered belatedly that I was still there. “I don’t want Aria being upset when she wakes up, Paige. I’ve given you your instructions. Go and carry them out.”
