Chapter Three

Chapter Three, Paige’s Point of View I held onto the table-top to keep myself steady. I thought I was going to black out. “She had some pretty bad injuries.” Drazic carried on, completely unaware that I was in earshot and that he was single-handedly dismantling my life. “She was barely conscious when he picked her up from the ground. I wanted to help him, but he’d have ripped me apart if I’d tried to touch her.” “He’s finally found his true mate. This will increase his strength tenfold, and our pack will be unstoppable.” The Warriors roared in celebration. “Paige, I think we need to get you out of here.” Livvie sounded like she was a hundred miles away. “We can go out the fire exit.” I shook my head. This was my pack, and therefore my damn diner. So I was going to keep my head high and give my warriors the fright of their lives. The only thing was my feet appeared to be glued to the floor. “You boys done with discussing the Alpha’s private life?” I could hear our waitress trying to steer the warriors away from the conversation. “Ava, you’re just jealous no man looks at you like that. Honestly, they say Alpha mate bonds are strong, but Jeez you got to see it to believe it.” I looked at my knife and contemplated stabbing Drazic through the throat. But instead I cleared my throat loud enough to make my presence known. “Oh shit.” Someone mumbled under their breath. I stood up and moved out of the booth and into the front of the restaurant on auto-pilot. The moves felt completely alien, as if someone else was in control of my body. I heard Drazic gulp before I’d even set eyes on him. “Luna I,-” I put up my hand to silence him. “Where is the Alpha?” I asked him softly. But he didn’t appear able to answer my question. His face was red and he was shuffling his feet. “WHERE IS THE f*****g ALPHA?” I roared. “He’s taken his mate to the pack hospital, Luna.” His mate! The words struck me like a dagger to the heart. I kept my face completely devoid of emotions and walked out of the door. I started out towards the hospital. It was only a minute's walk away from the diner, but it felt like the longest journey of my life. Everyone was staring at me. Not in their usual respectful way but with pity. They didn’t lower their eyes as they usually did. They looked right at me. It was almost as if they had decided I wasn’t worthy of their time anymore. Because there was a new Luna in town. I shuddered despite the warm weather and pulled my jacket tighter around me. Finally, I reached the hospital. The glass doors slid open, and I stepped up to the front desk. I recognized the clerk and referred to her by name. “Sophia, Alpha Jacob brought in a young female a short while ago. I need to check she is being looked after and that my husband is ok. Where can I find them? “Oh, you don’t need to worry Ma’am. The Alpha has put Aria on the priority floor.” Priority floor? That floor was for direct family, royalty and long-term patients who had been injured protecting either myself or the Alpha. There must have been some sort of mistake. But Sophia wasn’t finished yet. “And, he had everyone else on the floor moved up to the second floor so that our primary specialists are free to concentrate all of their efforts on her. He’s even spoken to a neighboring pack to bring in a healer.” She let out a dreamy sigh. “Right, thank you Sophia.” I said tightly as I made my way towards the stairs. “Oh Luna, you can’t go up there.” Sophia called after me I ground my teeth together and turned back to face her. “Why not?” I asked with a fake smile plastered across my lips. “The Alpha has given express orders preventing anyone other than medical specialists on the floor.” “Well, I don’t take orders from the Alpha, because I am his Luna.” Sophia had the grace to look a little embarrassed. “My apologies, Luna, but he said there were to be no exceptions.” “Sophia, unless you are going to physically restrain me, then I am going to go up those stairs and ensure that everything is being done to make sure that-” Her name stuck in my throat but I managed to spit it out, “Aria is receiving the best medical care we can afford to give. She opened her mouth to argue once more, but thought better of it and snapped it shut. I suspected that right now she wasn’t sure exactly how the chips would fall. Just because the Alpha had found his fated mate, did not mean that I would suddenly become obsolete. I literally had to pull myself up the stairs. The ‘flight’ part of my brain was ordering me to take off at the speed of light. But the ‘fight’ part of my brain was telling me I had more right to be here than she did. I paused when I reached the top of the stairs and pulled myself together in the silence, and then I placed my index finger against the security pad, outside of the ward and the door slid open. I could hear Jacob before I’d even stepped over the threshold. He was yelling a string of orders at the doctors. He was demanding blood tests, test results, MRI’s x-rays… I could see Dr Clark, our head neurologist, with his palms out attempting to appease my husband. “Alpha, judging by Miss Aria’s responses, I really don’t see any need to-” Jacob grabbed him by the throat and pressed him up against the wall. “Miss Aria is my fated mate. I am your Alpha and I pay your wages. You will give her every test available. Whether you think she needs it or not.” he yelled furiously. “Jacob put him down.” I commanded from across the hallway. But Jacob didn’t put him down. Instead, he turned to me very slowly. His eyes were pitch black, and his wolf was in complete control. “You” he said, raising his index finger “are not welcome here.”
