Chapter 8 A narrow escape

965 Words
With the jumbo so near to him, Elvis stepped back and did not stop until the office table blocked his way. He jumped on the table without hesitation and strode across the compartment to reach the opposite table. Then he took out the knife and planned to give a final blow. The moment Elvis was ready, the jumbo dashed toward him, making the table slid backward. Being unable to jump on the table, the jumbo could only reach out its hands to get Elvis. Its arms were long enough to corner Elvis, forcing him to step back to the rim of the table. It waved its hands in front of Elvis and its fingers even could touch his helmet. The knife is too short and Elvis would be exposed to the attack range of the jumbo if he attacked it. Therefore, he probably had just one chance to launch an attack. If he could not kill it in one shot, he would be caught by it and the result was imaginable. The office table kept sliding backward. The jumbo would be able to jump on the table if it was back to a position against the wall. No time left for hesitation, or else there was only death. Elvis held the knife with both of his hands and pricked the jumbo when it was not on its guard. He heard a harsh sound made by the knife and noticed that the knife was stuck in the middle of the zombie’s head with just about an inch inside it. The jumbo would not be killed that way. It shook its head fiercely, hoping to get rid of the knife. The shaking made it difficult for Elvis to add strength to press the knife deeper to kill it. He had to hold the hilt and pressed the knife with all the strength he had. The thin blade could not bear the huge power and break, with only part of the blade left in Elvis’s hand. Without the point of the knife, the blade posed no threat to the jumbo anymore. The moment the knife broke, the first thought popped out of Elvis’s mind was that his life was numbered, and then he thought about fleeing away. He would only fall prey to the zombie if he stayed. He might still be able to escape if he ran to the corridor first and closed the door from outside. Elvis was about to jump off the desk to escape when there was still a short distance from the wall, just at that moment he was seized by a powerful hand. Elvis hunched over and did his best to resist the pull. In the beginning, he could still be able to stay put, but the jumbo’s power was boundless, and his muscles began to ache and he was about to wear out. He had tried his last bit of energy to be still in a stalemate with the jumbo. He would not allow himself to fall prey to it! Having made up his mind to try one more time, Elvis suddenly turned around and thrust its left eye with the blade left. With a crackle, the blade punctured its eyeball and pricked into the eye socket, with only the hilt left outside. Unfortunately, the blade was too short to damage the zombie's brain Any human being with such a serious injury may have died, but zombie could survive that. The jumbo had no other reaction but irritation. The furious jumbo grabbed the hilt with his hand and pulled the knife out forcefully. The blade was pulled out along with the broken eyeball, leaving only a black blood hole in the place where it used to be its eye. Calm as Elvis was, he was still scared at the sight of that. His body finally went limp and toppled down to the ground. He then was pulled by the zombie to its direction and his chest ran into the baffle of the compartment heavily. His head was exposed to the zombie now. The jumbo looked at its snack with his right eye and bit Elvis’s head without hesitation. However, what the jumbo bit was actually the helmet. Being ignorant of what the helmet was, the jumbo just bit it and the harsh sound was made. The harsh sound cheered Elvis up. He did not want to die that way. He thought of his mother; he thought of various wonderful things waiting for him to experience. The desire to survive was so strong that Elvis tried to get down on his knees to gather strength to get rid of the jumbo zombie. However, the jumbo’s big hand seemed to grow on the forearm of Elvis. His struggle not only did not help free himself but gave the zombie power to get on the office table. Elvis’s body was adjusted because of the jumbo’s pulling force and now they faced each other. Staring at each other, they stayed put for a while. Suddenly, they moved at the same time. The jumbo roared and was ready to bite Elvis’s neck. Elvis immediately grabbed a ballpoint from the desk and plunged it into its empty left eye. Their arms were crossed and the jumbo’s lips were against Elvis’s neck. They were cheek to cheek as if they were hugging each other. The ballpoint was long enough to press deeper than before and the jumbo seemed to be deadly hurt this time. Time seemed to stop now. They remained motionless for a while, and then realizing that the jumbo might die, Elvis let go of the ballpoint, leaving it on the eye of it.
