Chapter 4 No one to rely on but yourself

1055 Words
Now that Elvis had made up his mind to go home, Elvis began to search in the small company for everything that could be used later. He had to be quick. With the zombies still having enough targets to pursue, he had to seize the opportunity and went home quickly and safely. With an area of more than 130 square meters, the company had two offices, a storage room, a toilet, a tearoom, and the public office area. There are six desks separated by baffles in the public office area, which were where they worked. Elvis rummaged through all the desks and got nothing but some snacks, which was not a surprise for him. Anyway, almost no one would go to work with weapons. He had found a key to the car, but driving a car now was no wise choice at all. The zombie virus broke out all of a sudden after the yellow smog, causing a large number of drivers mutated and turned into zombies. With cars parked everywhere on the road, it was difficult for a car to move quickly. Although the car can be a cover, it would also make the escape difficult for a man inside it. In this case, being eaten by the zombies was just a matter of time. The benefit of a car lied in its mobility, but it was now more of a burden. Perhaps it was more convenient to drive in the suburbs and the countryside, but in the city, it was like a coffin. As for the vehicle, actually Elvis had already had a suitable choice in mind: that was the motorcycle he rode to and from work. It could be quick enough to get rid of the zombies and small enough to travel on the road freely. Elvis then went to the storage room to search for useful things. He needed weapons now to fight against zombies he would encounter on his way home. The storage room was not big and stored office supplies and objects for activities. He had found a pair of large scissors, a roll of nylon rope and some rolls of scotch tape. The scissors were of the old-fashioned style made of iron, which was about twenty centimeters in length. It would be a good weapon to fight. Elvis held the handle of the scissors and stabbed the head of the dead zombie on the ground. The scissors pierced through the skull easily as if it were the shell of an egg. The resistance he suffered on the wrist and arm was not great. Then Elvis tried again at a different angle. This time he still stabbed through it easily. Then with satisfaction, he put away the scissors. Finishing searching the storage room, Elvis walked toward the tearoom. He remembered that a fruit knife was in the cupboard there. When he passed the restroom, he seemed to see a person through the ground glass look at him motionlessly. He was wondering if it was a zombie, but at the same time, a female voice sounded from inside. “Who’s that out there? This is Abigail Jones speaking! What happened? I’ve heard terrifying screams and dare not go out. I’ve been here for almost an hour.” The woman in the restroom said. Abigail was still a senior student who worked as an internship here as an accountant. She worked in the office on the other side. When the zombie virus broke out, she went to the restroom. Frightened by the shouts outside, she had been hiding in the restroom all the time. “Abigail, this is Elvis. You can come out now and check out what has happened yourself. It is difficult to make it clear in a few words.” Elvis did not want to say anything more. One had to face up to everything if the end of the world was about to come. Cowardice would only lead the way to death. The door of the restroom was open and a girl with short hair poking her head out slowly. After taking a look at Elvis, she screamed out, went back to the restroom and closed the door quickly again. Elvis looked down at the blood on his hands and smiled bitterly, thinking that his face might also be with blood and scared the girl away. When he went to the washstand, he said to Abigail seriously, “Abigail, the world has changed. We human beings are no longer the master of the world but the prey of the zombies. One has to be strong if he wants to survive.” Looking himself in the mirror, Elvis was also taken aback. There was black blood all over his face and white brains on his head and shoulders. He turned on the tap and washed up. At that time, the door of the restroom was open again. Abigail carefully tiptoed out as if she was afraid of disturbing Elvis. After coming out, she stood behind Elvis looking at him with fear. Abigail stood there remaining silent until Elvis finished washing. She said when Elvis was about to walk toward the tearoom, “What should we do? Will someone come and rescue us?” “Maybe. Maybe the Supermen are on their way rescuing the world.” Knowing that no one would come to save them, Elvis joked. The outbreak of the virus began at about 11:30 a.m. At that time, students were attending classes and workers were working. Staying together, most of them probably had become zombies because of being infected by viruses or being bitten by zombies. According to people in his company, only he and Abigail were alive now, with two running away without knowing their conditions and others dead or becoming zombies. That was the situation in his company within an hour after the outbreak of the virus. Judging from the situation in his company, he guessed that there would be about one-third of people being infected directly through the air. However, when they became zombies, others around them were defenseless and unaware, and soon one third would become one half, two thirds, nine-tenths…until all of them became zombies. From the moment the virus broke out, Elvis knew he had no one to rely on but himself.
