Chapter 3 The world has changed

909 Words
Ease time was never too long. The scream from outside constantly reminded Elvis of the upcoming of the end of the world.   He took out his mobile phone and found unexpectedly that the signal was still very strong, indicating that the mobile communication base station was still working and the power supply was also in normal operation.   Not knowing when the service provided by the station and power supply would stop, Elvis immediately called his mother, hoping that everything was fine at home. But he was also afraid…   The phone got through, but nobody answered. Elvis was in great anxiety.   “Please, please answer the phone!” Elvis said to himself worriedly, totally different from the decisive and fearless him just now.   The phone hung up itself more than one minute later because nobody answered it. Elvis tried again, but still no answer.   Elvis kept calling with trembling hands. Even confronted with zombies and death, he was never so nervous.   After a while, the phone was finally answered. Elvis was like a dying man drowned in the water breathing air again, he suddenly gained his strength after hearing his mother’s voice.   “Mom, are you okay? Why does it take you that long to answer the phone?” Elvis exclaimed crazily with tears on the face before his mother uttered a word.   "I was in the kitchen cooking just now. The sound of the kitchen ventilator covered that of the phone. I did not hear it.” Answered his mom.   Hearing that, Elvis breathed a sigh of relief.   “Look, mom. Something crazy is happening! Here comes the end of the world!”   "What? What trouble have you invited? Is it a big deal?" His mother interrupted him and asked him anxiously.   Elvis was speechless upon hearing that. How come his mother think him that way? Was he a troublemaker in the eyes of her? Well, right now it was not the time for him to refute her! He immediately continued the topic for fear of the communication being cut, “Mom, it’s not about me. It’s about the whole of mankind. Do you remember the movie I have watched before about the walking dead, the zombies? I saw them in reality. In our office, some have turned into zombies, some have been killed by them. Apart from those who have run away, I’m the only one left alive now. Haven’t you heard any voice strange outside while you were cooking?"   "Just…just now I seemed to hear someone screaming, but I did not take it seriously. What should we do? I told you that bad things in the movies might come true. Think about the air crash, the terrorist attack! Now here come the zombies! Why can’t we expect something good to happen?" Even in that situation, Elvis’s mother still mumbled as she always did.   "By the way, is Daniel at home? How is he?" Elvis suddenly thought of his stepfather while he was thinking about what to do. His natural father died a few years ago, and Daniel was her mother’s lover now.   "No! He is out with his friends. Alas, hope everything is fine with him. I’m to hang up and call him to come back as soon as possible.” Said his mom worriedly.    Hearing that her mother was about to hang up, Elvis believed she was still not clear about what was going on now, but it was understandable because everything happened all of a sudden and it was indeed hard to accept.   Elvis continued hurriedly, "Hang on, mom! Listen to me! First, you need to fill all the containers you can find with water, and prepare as much food as possible. Then, lock the door and don’t let anyone in, including Daniel. Tell him to open the door with the key if he comes back and remembers to confirm if he is injured by the zombie. If he is bitten, he would be infected and become a zombie, by then he would do nothing but hurt people.”   Pausing for a few seconds, Elvis seemed to have made a big decision and said, “Mom, wait for me and do not go out. I will make it home.”   "What’s going on! What’s going on!" Elvis’s mother kept murmuring and it was clear that all that had happened was too much for her to accept.   "Mom, don't be afraid. I’ll do my best to go home. Keep in mind what I have told you. Prepare the water, food and lock the door.” Elvis did not hang up until he was sure that his mother had kept everything in mind. It was probably the last phone call he had with her, and no one knew what lied ahead waiting for him on his way home.   You could at least live peacefully for no fear of being killed by zombies before whether you are rich or poor, powerful or not, although the society was unfair. However, society seemed to be much fairer now, because everyone had the same two choices: being eaten or eat others. Period!   After hanging up, Elvis browed through information online and concluded that the whole world collapsed. Every corner of the world had become the hunting ground of the zombies.
