A City Girl in a Provincial Life

Chapter 1 In a dimly lit room, booming pop music can be heard. A group of young people can be seen dancing in the middle of the room serving as a dance floor. People are drinking, some are grouped in twos or threes, the others are making out. In the corner of the room where single seater sofas are located, a girl about in her late teens is surrounded by a group of other teenagers. She looked exquisite with her fair skin, long silky black hair, heart shaped face and long limbs. She had a presence of royalty and dignified haughtiness. "Wow! Sophia, we finally graduated. I can't believe this is happening", a girl beside Sophia exclaimed. "Exactly! Imagine all those years of enduring those tons and loads of homework. We finally managed to graduate from high school. Where are you planning to go for university Sophia?", another girl said. "Yeah, where will you go? Just say so and I will follow you," a handsome boy added. Sophia just looked at them with an arrogant but satisfied smile. She slowly took a sip on the wine in her glass before replying to them, "I don't know, besides I really don't need to attend university anymore. I can just learn how things are being done from my father or not." "You're taking over your family company? Cool, I hope we're as wealthy as you are so that we don't need to go to university too." As the group continued to chat, an ordinary looking girl came over. Dressed in second hand clothes, she quite looked out of place in the room. She had her head bowed down, ashamed that she was not dressed beautifully as the other girls in the room. "Lety! You came, I've been waiting for you. Come, come sit here beside me", Sophia suddenly stood up and enthusiastically pulled the girl to her side. Lety Green is her closest friend among her circle of friends. They knew each other since primary school. Being the only child, she saw and treated Lety as her own sister. She always bring Lety along wherever she goes. They also do most things together like shopping, going on vacations, and so on. "Why are you not wearing the dress I gave you?", Sophia asked Lety as she examined her outfit. "Did you not like it?", Sophia kept on asking. The others thought that Lety was shy and embarrassed. However, she did not want the others to see the flashes of jealousy in her eyes so she kept her head down, as she took glimpses at Sophia's dress. She started to compare the dress that Sophia gave her to the one that Sophia was wearing. They had the same dress from the same brand, but the dress looked better on Sophia. It was an A-line dress, Sophia looked graceful and elegant in it. The dress accentuated her curves and long limbs but on Lety, she looked like a bamboo stick dressed in a sack. "N- no, I really liked the dress. It was just, I am afraid I might dirty it so I did not put it on", Lety meekly replied. The surrounding group of people were filled with sympathy towards Lety. They thought that to not embarrass Sophia, Lety would better make a laughing stock of herself. Sophia herself was moved with Lety's actions so she asked Lety to sit beside her and started consoling her. Sophia is the kind of girl that is hard to approach, with her short tempered and eccentric personality. She is also specially rude to others she is not close to. But to Lety, she is kind, caring and considerate. To others who don't know the relationship between Lety and Sophia, might call Sophia a person with split personality. "Where will you go for university Lety? ", Sophia asked in a soft tone. She did not want to scare the weak looking girl. "I don't know. I don't even know if I can afford the tuition, it keeps going higher. I think it is best for me to go run errands instead, at least I can still help my family that way", Lety replied in a weak voice. She bit her lower lips and started fidgeting in her set. She looked so weak and helpless. Seeing her in such a state, Sophia started to get protective. "Why worry about money? Don't worry, I'll talk to Dad about this issue, I'm sure he's going to help you", Sophia promised Lety in a reassuring manner. Lety looked at Sophia with glistening eyes, " Thank you so much, Sophia. You are the best friend and sister I ever had." Sophia smiled at Lety's antics and asked, "So where will you study? " " I want to take Business Management at U university! ", Lety said excitedly. "Business Management?" "Yeah, I want to be like Uncle Fred. I hope that one day, I too will have lots of companies and businesses!" "You want to be like Dad? Why not? Then we will take Business Management."
