Chapter 53
Jess watched in dismay as the hostile fleet formed up and turned towards the station. It was an impressive fleet. Twenty-six corvettes, four destroyers and five cruisers. Jess checked the readings again. No, four normal cruisers and one which had been heavily modified. The heavy cruiser was halfway to battlecruiser strength.
Messages were already flying between the fleet and the station. Jess reached out to the Wanderer, using it to contact docking control and declare an emergency. He requested immediate clearance to leave.
The answer took much longer to come back than it should have. When it came, his request was refused. They insisted he deal with the problems within the station. They even questioned whether he really had any problems with the ship’s engines.
