Sanctuary. The Guardian.
The Guardian was troubled. Space surrounding Sanctuary was as empty of ships as it had been for tens of thousands of years, save for the brief visit by the Wanderer. There was no immediate threat, yet the Guardian was still troubled.
Part of the problem was knowing the Taint was now so close, that it was most probably on the way already. Even if it wasn’t, even if Sal’s knowledge hadn’t reached the Taint as a whole, it would only be a few decades until the Taint arrived. Maybe a few centuries at most before its relentless spread reached Sanctuary.
The greater part of the problem related to the fragment of himself that was now on the Wanderer. In all the long, lonely years he had never before created a copy of himself. Now that copy was out see
