The sacrifice
Aria
"I, Kaiden Walters, reject you, Aria Brandon, as my mate."
Kaiden's harsh words wouldn't stop ringing in my head. I lay on my narrow, creaky bed as tears flowed freely down my eyes.
The cramped space of my room with faded, cream-colored walls that seem to close in on me. The air is stale, and the scent of unwashed clothes and despair hung heavy. A single, flickering light bulb casts eerie shadows on the walls, making the space feel even more oppressive.
My narrow, creaky bed is unmade, with tangled sheets and a stained comforter. Some clothes lay scattered on the floor beside the bed. The bedside table is cluttered with empty water bottles, crumpled up papers, and a few scattered coins.
My small stool are covered in dust and cluttered with clothes that seemed to have been thrown on top of each other in a hurry. My drawers were opened, revealing a jumbled mess of socks, underwear, and other clothes.
The floor is littered with dirty laundry, discarded food wrappers, and crumpled up papers. A few scattered books and torn pages from a notebook add to the sense of disarray.
I was the housekeeper, yet my room was always in a mess. Especially whenever I was depressed like this. It was difficult to believe that I waited for three extra years, just to get rejected.
Other werewolves found their mates at the age of eighteen. I didn't find mine until I was twenty-one.
"Oh my goodness! It is Alpha Kaiden!" Scarlet, the only girl who spoke to me, jumped up in excitement when I told her about the mate bond.
Kaiden didn't waste any time to approaching me.
"I can not be seen with someone as weak as an omega," he had begun as he looked down at me with disgust.
Tears began to drop down my eyes that minute. I saw people standing at different corners and giggling. I couldn't take the rejection, I ran as fast as my legs could carry after he was done.
"Silly girl!"
I groaned.
That was my aunt's voice. She pushed my door open and walked into the room. Of course, I was not allowed to lock my room in case my aunt or her daughter needed something.
"Did you wash all the dirty plates in the kitchen before running into your room to waste time?"
I stood up lazily and dragged my feet out of the room. I was still in a state of depression. I washed the dishes and cooked dinner for my aunt and my cousin sister, who looks almost exactly like me.
"This lazy animal always has reason to waste time and make me starve."
After serving them, I went back to my room to continue to cry.
I knew I wouldn't be able to bear the shame after what happened, so I decided to leave the next morning.
***
It was morning, and I was packing a few clothes in a small bag when my door suddenly burst open. My aunt walked in with two guards who were from the Alpha's mansion. My heart skipped the moment I saw them.
"Is th... is... there a problem...?" I stuttered.
"She is the tool for the sacrifice," my aunt's voice sounded without any remorse. "Seize her!"
My heart sank deep into my stomach.
"What?" I asked.
Tears began to drop down my eyes. I thought I had cried all the tears in my eyes yesterday.
The guards seized me without letting me say another word. I was dragged to the pack house and locked up in the dungeon with chains around my legs and hands. I cried and prayed for a miracle, but nothing happened.
No one would come to my rescue. I had lost both parents to a car accident at the age of three. I was adopted by my mom's twin sister, who doesn't even treat me like a relative.
I knew a lot had been going on in the pack lately. Some elders got contaminated with unknown illnesses. I had heard that the pack had been asked to sacrifice a maiden to clean the pack of their sins, but I never paid attention to any of the stories. If only I knew that I was the chosen one to clean the pack.
Later that night, I was led into the forest by the guards, two elders, the Alpha, and Vivian, my aunt.
I trudged through the dense forest, the crunch of dry leaves and snapping of twigs echoing beneath my feet. My heart throbbed. I could hear my heart beating very fast in my chest. I dragged my feet gradually.
"You should move faster," one of the guards scolded me. "We are not here to joke."
"Help her move if she's finding it difficult to."
I could not understand what was happening.
We walled through the trees, and the path got even more narrower as we proceeded. I no longer had the energy to cry. The last breath I had, I used it to lift my legs while being pushed recklessly by the guards.
We finally reached the edge of a clearing. A big ancient tree stood alone in the heart of the forest. Cold shivers ran down my spine as I thought about how my last days were filled with sorrows.
"Here is the sacrifice," the oldest elder began after saying some incantations. "We hope that you accept the sacrifice and wash away our sins."
"I am going to miss my pretty daughter so much. Now who will help me with the house chores?"
That was the voice of my pretentious lying aunt. She even began to sob to make it look real. I rolled my eyes.
"You will be fine," the elder tried to console her.
"I hope so."
"I know so."
I shut my eyes tightly and pressed my lips together. A sense of resignation suddenly washed over me. I inhaled deeply and nodded my head. If this was my faith, then so be it.
I felt a hard object hit me hard across the head. I lost balance and fell to the floor immediately. I watched my blood gushing out of my head so freely. It felt like a dream a while ago, but now that I felt the pain... it was no longer a dream.
I could feel life squeezing out of me.
My aunt was smiling as they all gathered around me and began to naked enchantment. I struggled on the floor until I felt the last bit of air squeeze out of me. I gasped. Finally, I felt peace within myself. I would finally leave this wicked world.
Darkness covered the whole earth, and that was my end. That was how I was killed!
