Chapter 5 Kate was horrified by her mother’s behavior. How could she treat Walker as if he was anything like her father? She could hear Walker talking in the other room, and her father too, as she reached for two serving bowls. Her mother was at the cutting board, chopping up green onions and tomatoes to toss onto the salad. “Mom, how could you say that to Walker? It was rude.” “How is it rude, Kate? And how well do you know this man? You were on your way to Sacramento with a good job lined up, and then this man sweet talks you into staying, into moving in with him, and now you’re getting married. I don’t understand. Are you pregnant?” she stated, not quietly or discreetly, and Kate was mortified that her mother would think that. “No, I’m not pregnant. Would you keep your voice down?
