Chapter 3

417 Words
Nathan was gone when I woke the next morning. The torn pieces of the divorce agreement were scattered outside my bedroom door. For one brief moment, I wondered whether tearing it up meant he wasn't entirely heartless. Then my phone chimed with a w******p message. It was the unfamiliar account again. Unknown contact: I'm back, b***h. It's time you gave Nathan back to me. Against my better judgment, I had accepted the request. Over the next 6 months, she sent me photographs of herself with Nathan. One showed him making her a warm ginger drink and rubbing her stomach. Vivian: Couldn't get a ride in the rain? Sorry. Nathan is busy taking care of me. There were photos of him cooking for her and drying her hair. Vivian: He's never done these things for you, has he? One showed them kissing passionately in a car. Vivian: He still can't resist me. I knew the sender was Vivian, the woman Nathan had never stopped loving. She had even given me the code to his safe and told me to look for the divorce agreement. This time, she sent a photograph of Nathan asleep on a hotel bed. Vivian: So, you found the agreement. Vivian: I only divorced Nathan because I had to go abroad for treatment. Even then, he was willing to cut ties with his family and hand me his company and all his money. Vivian: We were married for only 2 years, and any court-ordered rehabilitative alimony should have ended long ago. Vivian: Do you understand now how much I mean to him? Vivian: I'm back, so leave before you embarrass yourself any further. Vivian: You have 3 days to divorce him. Otherwise, I'll make our relationship public. Vivian: Take everything Nathan gave you. I don't want anything secondhand. Vivian: I have to go. Nathan is calling me. The messages stopped there. Tears splashed onto the screen. Through blurred vision, I forced myself to type a reply. Claire: You don't want secondhand things? Then what is Nathan? She didn't answer. A crushing pressure closed around my chest until I could barely breathe. No wonder Nathan had stormed out in the middle of the night. I had comforted myself by imagining he was angry because I wanted a divorce. In reality, he had rushed to a hotel to sleep with his ex-wife. Whatever hope I had left died. With trembling fingers, I messaged him. Claire: Nathan, when you wake up, come home and finish the divorce paperwork.
