Chapter 4

326 Words
After 30 minutes without a reply, I called, but all I heard was a busy signal. His w******p chat repeatedly showed "typing...", yet no message arrived. Vivian sent a voice recording instead. "Why do you keep calling Nathan, you shameless homewrecker? Don't you know how irritating it is when an outsider interrupts a couple?" My chest tightened as I listened. I forced down the pain and typed my answer one word at a time. Claire: I've already asked him for a divorce. If you want to return to him openly, tell him to come home and sign the papers. Vivian didn't respond. I refused to spend another moment waiting for Nathan. My fingers still shook as I hired a moving company online and began sorting through our belongings. I threw our wedding photos into the trash, followed by the matching watches he had never worn. I also threw away the blessed pendant I had once given him. He had never worn that either. By the time the movers arrived, the living room was filled with things I no longer wanted. I calmly told them to carry everything downstairs and throw it away. Then they packed my belongings. I had lived in Nathan's house for 4 years, but with a full crew, every possession that belonged to me was packed and loaded in a single afternoon. When I left, I looked back at the home where I had spent those years and finally began to cry again. I had barely finished arranging my things in the new apartment when Vivian sent another message. It was the location of a hotel. Vivian: Come over. Nathan is here. My fingers tightened around the phone. At last, I replied. Claire: Fine. I changed into loose athletic clothes and called my two closest friends, Stella Reed and Paige Young. Together, we drove to the hotel. If Nathan and Vivian had no respect for me, I was done protecting either of them.
