Laura's POV.
I remained in the office after the departure of the Gamma to do some more work for the overall benefit of the pack and for me to be pleased with myself. The fact that I've filled for divorce doesn't necessarily mean I should no longer work for the uplifting of the pack. I don't hate this pack.
I've always loved the pack since. I came here to become the Luna. It's not the pack I have problems with, which is making me leave, but some individuals within the pack who betrayed my trust and treated me in the most brutal manner.
So, while the divorce is not yet done with, I'll still continue to perform my duties as the Luna with utmost dedication. That's what I've decided and I will do exactly that.
Reflecting further on what the Gamma just said, I think he was right on the need for us to beef up our security at the points being guarded by our wolves and the entire boundaries of our territory.
We have witnessed several attempts by rogue wolves to breach our perimeter fence and enter our camp throughout my five year sojourn here, so it's actually not a new thing.
Mr Peterson probably just mentioned it today because it has become very urgent.
Getting the money available for the Gamma should also not be hard despite the court order that we should be guarded in using the assets that we would eventually share.
This is one of the issues concerning pack maintenance for which the court allows us to withdraw money. So there should be little or no problem getting cash for the use of the Gamma. These are the kinds of expenses for which we are allowed to draw money pending the determination of the matter.
As I continued to process my thoughts about my meeting with the Gamma, I heard a soft knock on my door. I asked who was there to come in knowing fully well it could be Beta Joel.
The door opened and Beta Joel came in.
"Good day, Luna," he greeted.
"Good day, Beta Joel. How was your day?" I asked.
"I'm very fine, Luna, and yours?"
"I'm very cool," I said.
He nodded his head and said, "Good, Luna."
"We haven't talked for quite some time," I said, "except just seeing each other at Alpha Duncan's party and of course, we couldn't chat at that place?"
He cupped his chin briefly with his right hand. "Yes,, it was quite a long time we spoke, though we saw at the party you mentioned. Even if we wanted to talk there, it wouldn't have been possible in view of what happened there," he said, fixing his gaze on the floor.
The expression on the Beta's face shows clearly he wants to ask me and get full information about what happened at Alpha Duncan's party but he doesn't know how to go about it.
I decided to help him out by asking a question.
"What was your reaction to what you saw at Alpha Duncan's party?"
He cleared his throat. "I was as shocked as anyone at the party. I couldn't believe my eyes, Luna. But Luna, what happened, and who is that young man?" he asked, suddenly rediscovering his confidence.
"I really intended to do what I did in order to teach Alpha Josh a little lesson in how not to treat a woman. Incidentally, everything worked in my favor at that party. I never really thought I would meet my true mate at the event but it happened courtesy of the moon goddess who had graciously arranged everything. So, to answer your second question, that young man is my mate. I found my mate at Alpha Duncan's party."
The Beta fell silent for a while before reacting again
"But, Luna, did you not throw all caution to the winds? Did you actually consider the fact that two Alphas may have clashed at the party and everything could have ended in a fiasco?"
"Honestly, Beta, I thought of all that but I was ready for everything to end in a fiasco in order to exact my revenge."
He sighed. "Hmmm, what about the celebrant? Did you put his feelings into consideration?"
"I really didn't put the celebrant into consideration. Because I thought he has the sympathy of the celebrant who is his close friend. After the incident at the mate claiming ceremony, Alpha Duncan had not called me on the matter, so I believe he supported what Alpha Josh did."
"What is my boss reaction to it aside from blowing his top?"
"Nothing more than getting angry, and I told him I've no apologies."
He bowed his head down and ran his left hand through his hair.
"Has Alpha Duncan himself called you to ask you for explanation, considering that it happened at his party?"
"That's what I've been saying. You're now starting to understand me gradually. You won't believe if I tell you he's not called me up till now. That's why I said he doesn't care. For him, anything goes."
He used his right hand to wipe his face. "
"If you insist, Luna, then I would agree. But he is a well respected Alpha, so I don't know why he would be non caring. But one thing I'm sure of is that he would call you."
"Let's hope so. If he calls me, I will tell him why I did what I did. Beta, I want to let you into a secret I kept from you."
He adjusted himself on the chair and moved forward. "Tell me please, Luna. I'll love to hear it."
I looked him straight in the eye and bit my lips. "I have filled for divorce."
He jumped up from his seat. "What did you just say, Luna?"
I repeated myself calmly. "I mean I've filled for divorce against Alpha Josh."
He sat back on the chair and sighed deeply. " Why did you have to take tthat very drastic action?"
"I had no option but to take it, Beta, considering all I went through on the hands of Alpha Josh and his mate."
He placed his head on my table and used his right hand to stroke it gently. "This news is devastating, Luna. So devastating that I don't know how to respond next."
"But in all fairness, Beta do you think I should continue to stay with him when I've found my mate and he's also found his? It's not logical if it stays that way."
"How did he react to the divorce? I mean how did he take it?"
"The way most people slammed with divorce papers take it. With a great deal of shock and embarrassment. That's how he took it. He pleaded and said we could talk things over, but I insisted it was over."
"Has he agreed to it, Luna? You know it has to be agreed to." said the Beta
"Yes, he was initially reluctant to even sign the court papers, but I persuaded him and he reluctantly did. Now we have to reach an agreement and sign before it is finally decided upon."
At this point, I decided that the Beta had enough details from me about everything that transpired and the reason for it. He couldn't have asked for more and if he did, he would hear more as events unfold. He has all this luxury because he had been so nice and open minded to me in the past. No one who was reticent or appeared snobish to me in the ppast could get all this that the Beta is getting from me. Only the Beta among the officials of this Pack could I have accorded the kind of courtesy he is getting now. And he definitely earned it over the years we have been together in this Pack.
"Mr Taverne, this is about everything I will be able to tell you for now," I said to him. "I'll certainly let you know more as events unfold, okay?"
He bowed his head. "I'm absolutely grateful and highly honored, Luna to have got all that information from you. Sincerely, I never knew I'll be able to hear from you about half of what you just told me. My intention coming here is just to say 'hello' to you as I usually do. Thanks very much for your time."
"It has been a great pleasure talking to you as usual, Beta Joel," I concluded.
With that, he stood up, took a bow, and left my office.
After spending about one more hour in my office, I packed my bags and left for home.
Back home at the Alpha's mansion, I sat in my room trying to figure out what I would do around my room and the mansion in general to keep myself busy. Since the divorce papers were served on Alpha Josh, our relationship had been a bit cold.
Actually, it had been cold, sort of right from the time he brought in Shirley, but I must confess it has become colder with his acceptance of the divorce papers.
Nowadays, each of us stay confined to our rooms. My Alpha spends his entire time in Shirley's room while I spend more of my time in my room when I'm not in .my office at the. pack house. We hardly do interact anymore, except if we meet at the Passage or the living room..
As I continued to think on what I could do I raised my head up to look at the ceiling and something caught my attention. I saw some cobwebs that had formed.
Promptly, I took my long reach duster and started to remove the cobwebs, on the ceiling board, the ceiling fan and anywhere else they could be found around my room. I did the job for the greater part of thirty minutes, ensuring that every single cobweb was removed.
As I rounded off the work, I started to receive mindlinked message from Lucia Jacob, one of my associates. She had actually been doing that for quite a while, but I'd not had the time to invite her over and address her concerns.
And talking about her concerns, it would be nothing more than seeing me and hearing from me, most likely to confirm what they heard from Sarah. And since I had resolved to attend to them one by one rather than as a group, this time, I would invite her over when I'm done cleaning. She might even be the one to prepare lunch for me, who knows?
As soon as I was done cleaning, I called Lucia to see me in my room. Within five minutes after I had mindlinked her, she arrived at the Alpha's mansion. I heard a soft knock on my bedroom door. Of course, I had already known she's the one.
"Come in Lucia," I said.
The door opened and Lucia came in.
"Good day, Luna," she said, taking a bow and grinning widely.
"Good day, Lucia," I replied. "You are very welcome. How are you, today?"
"I'm very fine," she said.
"Good to hear that from you, Lucia. Your well-being and that of the others is Paramount to me. I have you always in my mind. I know why you have been mind-linking me. You want to see me and for good reason too. Have you seen Sarah?"
She nodded her head. "Yes, Luna, I saw her and she told me everything you told her.
"Good. What she said to you is exactly how it is, okay?"
"Yes, Luna but I still have a question."
"What's the question, Lucia?"
She cleared her throat. "My question is about the timeline. Sarah didn't explain anything about that. When are we thinking of leaving here? Something like an estimated time."
"Well, I understand your anxiety to leave this place. I'm also as anxious, if not more anxious than you. But we have to be patient and do things properly, so we don't shoot ourselves on the leg. If I'm to give you an estimated time for us to leave here, I would say it could happen in the next 60 days if everything works well. So, that's all I can say about that for now." I explained.
Her face brightened and a smile formed on her lips. She seemed to be happy with the little explanation I made.
"Is there any other questions you have?"
She shook her head. "No Luna."
"Ok, Lucia, you have nothing to worry about, everything will be fine, my dear."
She nodded. "Thanks, Luna."
"You're always welcome, Lucia."
With that, she opened my door and left.
