Chapter one: The New Girl
The first day of school at Maplewood High was filled with the usual energy and anticipation. Students moved through the hallways, catching up with friends, discussing their holidays, and preparing for the year ahead.
Seventeen-year-old Ethan Carter stood by his locker, checking his phone between classes. As captain of the basketball team and a consistently high-achieving student, he was well known throughout the school. Despite his accomplishments and popularity, he often felt that something was missing.
"Hey, Ethan!" his best friend, Jake, called out. "Did you hear? We have a new student."
Ethan shrugged. "So? We get new students every year."
Before Jake could respond, the principal's voice echoed through the hallway.
"Students, please welcome our newest student, Amelia Brooks."
Ethan looked up.
Standing beside the principal was a girl with long dark hair and warm brown eyes. She appeared understandably nervous as dozens of students turned their attention toward her. Holding her books close, she offered a polite smile.
For a brief moment, Ethan found himself unable to look away.
Amelia noticed his gaze and quickly looked down.
"Well," Jake said with a grin, "that certainly got your attention."
Ethan shook his head, though he couldn't suppress a smile.

At lunch, every table seemed occupied except one. Amelia carried her tray carefully, searching for a place to sit.
"Hey!"
She turned and saw Ethan gesturing toward an empty seat.
"You're welcome to sit here if you'd like."
Amelia hesitated. She had already heard plenty about Ethan Carter—the basketball captain, the honor student, and one of the most admired students at Maplewood High.
"Thank you," she replied as she took a seat.
The conversation began formally but soon flowed naturally. They discussed their classes, favorite music, and aspirations for the future.
By the end of lunch, they were both laughing comfortably.
For the first time since arriving at Maplewood High, Amelia felt a sense of belonging.
And for Ethan, meeting Amelia brought an unexpected excitement he had not felt in quite some time.
Neither of them realized that their story was only beginning.
Chapter Two: Growing Closer
Over the following weeks, Ethan and Amelia developed a close friendship.
They studied together after school, shared conversations during lunch, and exchanged messages well into the evening.
The more time Ethan spent with Amelia, the more he appreciated her authenticity.
She was uninterested in popularity.
She paid little attention to his athletic achievements.
Instead, she valued him for his character and personality.
That realization left a lasting impression on him.
One afternoon, while they sat beneath a large oak tree behind the school, Amelia smiled.
"You know, Ethan, when I first arrived here, I was terrified."
"Really?" he asked.
"You were the first person who made me feel welcome."
Ethan paused, touched by her words.
Before he could respond, Amelia's phone buzzed.
Her smile faded as she read the message.
"What's wrong?" Ethan asked.
She looked away.
"My dad received another job offer."
"What does that mean?"
Amelia took a deep breath.
"It means we might be moving again."
The news caught Ethan off guard.
Moving?
After everything they had shared?
He looked at her, suddenly confronted with the possibility that someone who had become so important to him might soon leave.
As they sat together beneath the tree, uncertainty lingered between them.
Neither of them knew what the future would bring.
