Ep.1 Could you come home with me?
"My name is Ye Zimu. Will you come home with me? No one plays with me." I looked at the blonde girl standing before me, a head shorter than mine, tiptoeing to speak to me in her pink dress. Hearing this, I froze, unsure how to respond.
Seeing my silence, Su Shuyu grew anxious. "Don't you like me? I have candy here, take it. We have lots more at home. Will you play with me?“ She pressed the candy into my hand, and suddenly I held a piece wrapped in colorful paper. A tall, kind-faced uncle beside us looked at the adorable girl and asked, "SuSu, do you like this sister?"
" Yap" Su Shuyu nodded toward her father, tears welling in her eyes as if afraid he might refuse.
"What can I do with you?" the man said, meeting his daughter's pleading gaze.
He then ordered his henchmen, "Get rid of this man—I don't want to see him again.” Instantly, my father, already beaten to a pulp, was dragged out. Su Yi approached me, bending down to examine my arms covered in fresh and old wounds. “Kid,” he said, "your dad didn't pay his debts and hurt my people. I punished him. As for you, do you want to come home with me? You won't be beaten by your father anymore." I glanced at my father being dragged away at the door, then turned back to the man I'd only met less than ten minutes ago. I nodded. It felt like I had no other choice.
“Great! Now I have a friend to play with. Let's go!” Su Shuyu grabbed my hand. Her hand was so warm. Was mine too dirty and cold? I wondered.
Arriving at the Su residence, the imposing European-style mansion and unfamiliar faces frightened me, still only ten years old. Everyone in this house looked fierce, yet they all seemed to respect that man from earlier.
" You'll live here from now on. Spend your days playing with SuSu. But not free. You must learn to survive here."
"Oh, and what's your name?"
"Ye Zimu."
"Ye Zimu, lovely! Mumu, come see my room—it's full of candy!" Before I could react, Su Shuyu grabbed my hand and dashed toward her bedroom. Watching her grasp mine so happily again, I felt inexplicably drawn to her radiant warmth.
After moving into the Su residence, my daily routine involved attending school with Su Shuyu during the day and undergoing military training at night. Being new, I often fainted from exhaustion, though I truly gave it my all.
"Mumu, is Uncle Wu bullying you? I'll tell Dad to make you run less." Su Shuyu said, clutching my hand.
"Everyone gets the same training load. It's just that my stamina can't keep up with the others," I replied, turning to face her. Su Yi couldn't resist Su Shuyu's persistence and now had her sharing meals and sleeping arrangements with me. I became like a doll on her bed, held every night as she slept. At first, I'd quietly move her hands away, but the constant “Mumu” calls made me give up resisting. Eventually, I grew accustomed to it. "I want to get stronger, so no one can bully me,"I added. Memories from the past suddenly flooded back.
.....
I still remember the day after my sixth birthday, when that gambling man hit my mother for the first time.
"Stop gambling!"
"Mind your own business. I'll win it all back tonight. We'll have enough for the kid's tuition next year."
"Why not deliver food instead? Gambling always loses."
“Get out of my way.”
Bang! The man slammed the door and stormed out.
Later, I watched my mother, her hair yanked, being beaten. She kicked and punched the man desperately, but it did nothing. He just shoved her aside. Then he knelt, saying, “Forgive me, I'm a beast! Tomorrow I'll find a job.” He promised it wouldn't happen again. Mother always forgave him.
“Why are you home so late again? You'll wake the child.” My mother would always lock me in my room. Then the living room would fill with loud voices—I can't recall what they were saying anymore. I only remember lying in bed, terrified. But each time I curled up silently, telling myself it was all a dream. Yet every time I woke, the bruises on my mother's body told me it wasn't.
That day, “Yeye, dinner's on the table. Remember to eat later.” She handed me a lollipop. Then she dragged her suitcase away and never returned.
“Troublemaker! You've got the community workers chasing me all day. I'm warning you—stop climbing onto the balcony and shouting nonsense!”
"I was just so hungry."
After my mother left, that man still gambled. He’d come home reeking of alcohol, often snapping at me for no reason. At first, I’d cry, hoping he’d take pity and stop yelling. But when I realized it was useless, I stopped crying. Someone like him wasn’t worth my tears. Seeing him made me feel sick every time.
“Don't glare at me like that! You won't get any food tomorrow.” With that, the man collapsed onto the sofa and fell asleep.
....
Thinking of this, my eyes stung with tears. “Mumu, don't cry. I won't let anyone bully you,” she said, reaching out to stroke my head. Her bright smile spread across her face as she tightened her embrace. At that moment, she was only an inch away from me. The moon tonight seemed unusually full. Bathed in its glow, I noticed her thick lashes for the first time—so beautiful, her eyes so pure. Suddenly, my face felt hot—probably because it was a warm day.
“I'm not crying. Go to sleep, we have school tomorrow,” I said, turning away. I couldn't handle her being so close—she was too adorable.
“Goodnight, Mumu,” Su Shuyu said sweetly. “Will you come home with me?”
Over the next week, I gradually uncovered the true identity of this seemingly kind-hearted uncle. The man was Su Yi, the shadowy leader of the renowned assassin group Fierce Bird in Country A. Known as a smiling tiger, he had lost his wife to childbirth complications and poured all his love into his daughter, Su Shuyu.
Fierce Bird maintained a roster of over a hundred assassins, each known only by code names and unaware of one another's real identities. With an exceptionally high mission success rate, they were utterly loyal to Su Yi. Su Shuyu was Su Yi's only daughter, two years younger than me. He was determined to groom her as his successor, integrating her into the Firebird Group's daily training regimen.
