Chapter1
“Da’Vina, please come downstairs. Your father and I need to talk to you about something, honey.”
I came barreling down the stairs and almost fell in the process. When I rounded the corner, my mother started laughing at me.
“I swear, child, you are so damn clumsy, and I don’t understand it. You are a wolf, after all.”
I felt a blush creep onto my cheeks. “I’m sorry, Mother. I just trip over my own feet sometimes.”
She shook her head with a small smile. “Come on. Your father is in his office.”
I followed my mother to Father’s office. When we entered, my father looked up, smiling from ear to ear. I ran toward him, and he jumped over the desk, knocking me to the floor before tickling me again.
I was laughing so hard that all I could manage to say was, “Please stop!”
Finally, after what felt like forever, he helped me up from the floor. I dusted myself off before looking back at him.
“Mother said you needed to talk to me. Is something wrong?”
He looked at my mother, and I saw her nod. My father let out a long breath.
“Nina, you remember your mother and I telling you that you were special because you got your wolf early. But not only that—because of your wolf’s coloring.”
I nodded slowly.
“Well, we thought we were being careful about letting you shift, but apparently someone from Alpha Victor’s pack saw you running around in wolf form. They don’t know exactly who the wolf was, and nobody in our pack would tell them, but we need you to start wearing your contacts again immediately. And do not let Rudina come out until we say it’s safe.”
I looked down at the floor, feeling my mother’s hand settle on my shoulder.
“Mother, what color should I wear?”
She smiled softly. “Well, since you came out looking exactly like me, how about we give your dad some credit and put in the ice-blue contacts instead?”
We both looked at my father, and his eyes lit up when she said that.
But then his expression darkened again.
“You’ll also have to dye your hair to match mine. As of now, we’ve never told the kingdom that you were our daughter. As far as they know, the Wolf King and Queen have no child. We’re going to send you away so you’ll be safe. We’re sending you to your aunt’s pack. She’s the only one who knows your true identity, so please keep it that way.”
I jumped back, panic flooding through me.
“I don’t want to leave you guys! It’s not fair!”
My mother knelt in front of me. “Nina, I know it isn’t fair, but you have to understand that you are very special. You are the first wolf ever born with pink fur and black streaks. Those markings represent that you’ve been blessed by the Goddess Sisters. That means you are more important than anyone else and must stay safe at all costs.”
“But you’re the king and queen. Surely you can protect me.”
My father crouched down so we were eye level.
“My precious daughter, we would give our lives to save you. But Victor will come for us, and he’ll bring an army with him. Right now, our main goal is to protect you. This kingdom and this pack would give their last breath to keep you safe.”
I opened my mouth to speak, but my father pressed a finger gently against my lips.
“Go with your mother so she can dye your hair and put the contacts in. Then she’ll give you some extras to hide on you. Da’Vina, if something happens and Victor comes here before we get you out, you must pretend you are not our daughter—just another pack member. He cannot know who you are. I swear to you, he cannot know.”
His voice softened.
“There’s more about our family and our history that you need to know, but right now I can’t tell you. Just know that your wolf is very special… just like you.”
My mother gently pulled me away and led me to her bathroom, where she already had everything prepared. I sat silently while she dyed my hair and helped me put in the contacts.
When the timer finally went off, she rinsed out my hair and blow-dried it. I heard soft sniffling behind me, so I turned and wrapped my arms around her.
She hugged me tightly before pulling away.
“Come now. We must go to the dining room. Your father prepared dinner for us.”
We walked downstairs in complete silence. By the time we reached the dining room, Father was already waiting.
We had barely started eating when one of the guards burst into the room.
“My king! Victor has arrived with an army and is demanding that we hand over the pink wolf!”
“Get the troops ready now!” my father barked.
Then he turned to my mother.
“Take her to Heidi. She knows what to do.”
My father pulled me into a tight embrace.
“You are Heidi’s daughter now. No matter what happens or what you see, do not break character. Do not let them know who you are. Do you understand me, Da’Vina?”
I could only nod as tears welled in my eyes.
My mother dragged me through the secret passages beneath the house until we finally reached Heidi’s home. Heidi opened the door, shock flashing across her face.
“My queen, is everything okay?”
My mother’s voice trembled. “No, Heidi. It’s time. You need to protect her. Make sure she survives this, no matter what.”
Heidi immediately dropped to one knee.
“I will protect her with my life, my queen. Now go. The king needs you.”
My mother turned and pulled me into one last hug, kissing the top of my forehead. I felt tears fall into my hair.
I didn’t want to let go, but Heidi gently pulled me away. My mother shifted into her white wolf with pink streaks and disappeared into the night.
At that point, I was a sobbing mess.
Heidi pulled me against her chest. “I know this is a lot to take in, Nina, but we must stay here. Victor is power hungry, and he won’t stop until he gains your power.”
We sat on the couch, and I curled into her lap.
Then the front door was kicked open.
“You! Come out now! Alpha Victor wants everyone at the pack grounds immediately!”
I moved to attack him, but Heidi grabbed my arm tightly. When I looked at her, she shook her head before mind-linking me.
“You are an omega now. You cannot show your power, or they’ll know. Stop right now.”
I nodded reluctantly before following her outside.
The man grabbed both our arms and dragged us toward the pack grounds. When we arrived, my heart nearly stopped.
My father was badly wounded, and Alpha Victor had him by the throat.
I tried to jerk away from the guard, but suddenly I heard my father’s voice in my mind through our link.
I’m so sorry, Nina. You have to stand there. Do not move. Your mother and I will give you and Heidi a chance to run. You’ll know when to do it.
Tears blurred my vision as I shook my head.
The guard shoved us forward, and we hit the ground hard before slowly standing again.
Bodies littered the pack grounds. Warriors lay dead around us. The only survivors were lower-ranking pack members.
Alpha Victor turned toward the crowd.
“Today, you will watch your king fall unless you hand over the pink wolf.”
The remaining pack members looked confused. Only a few people had ever known the true color of my wolf. My parents had hidden my existence from nearly everyone in the pack. Most believed I was merely their teenage cousin.
Victor tightened his grip around my father’s throat, and blood began running down his neck.
I searched desperately for my mother but couldn’t find her anywhere.
“I will not ask again,” Victor snarled. “Bring me the wolf, or your king dies. Then the queen will become mine after I kill him.”
Still, nobody moved.
Victor suddenly drove his claws into my father’s throat, tearing it open.
I nearly screamed.
Before I could, Heidi wrapped her arms around me tightly.
A howl of agony echoed through the clearing.
I turned just in time to see my mother’s wolf stalking toward Alpha Victor.
Victor grinned. “Well, look who decided to show herself. I killed your mate. Now you’re mine.”
My mother lunged at him, but Victor caught her midair.
“Shift. Now.”
My mother was forced back into her human form.
That should have been impossible. There was no way he should have been stronger than them.
A witch, I realized. He had to be working with a powerful witch.
My mother carefully turned her eyes toward me.
“I’m sorry, my child, but I cannot let him take me. He will abuse me, and I can’t allow that.”
I didn’t understand what she meant until Victor dragged his hand possessively down her body.
“You will watch me take your queen,” he sneered.
My mother struggled violently, and somehow she managed to make him loosen his grip. Blood dripped from his hand.
“You b***h!” Victor roared. “You’ll pay for that!”
My mother dropped to the ground and rolled toward one of the fallen warriors. I saw her snatch a knife from beside the body.
Before anyone could stop her, she drove the blade into her own chest.
Victor stared down at her in shock.
“Well… I didn’t expect that.”
Then his eyes landed directly on me.
“You. Come here. I know you’re related to them.”
I shook my head immediately.
Heidi stepped forward and bowed low.
“Alpha, sir, I apologize, but this is my niece. I took her in after my brother died in the last war. The king and queen sent their cousin away a while ago. Again, I apologize.”
She remained bowed as Victor’s face twisted with rage.
“Doesn’t matter. She’s mine now. She’s too beautiful to kill. She’ll make an excellent breeding machine.”
Heidi’s voice cracked with desperation.
“Sir, please. I beg of you. We can clean your home and prepare your meals, but please don’t do that to her. She’s only sixteen. Her wolf hasn’t even surfaced yet. The queen said she was a late bloomer and wouldn’t shift until her eighteenth birthday.”
Victor stalked toward us before grabbing my arm and sniffing me.
My wolf had hidden herself after witnessing our parents’ deaths, so he couldn’t scent her on me now.
“No matter,” he muttered. “She’ll serve me as an omega until then.”
Then he turned toward his warriors.
“Kill the rest. Take all the children. The men can become warriors, and the women…” He smirked darkly. “Well, you know what to do.”
The next thing I knew, the remaining pack members were being slaughtered while the rest of us were chained together.
Children cried as we were loaded into a box truck. I tried my best to comfort them, but it was hard with chains wrapped around my wrists.
Then someone injected us with something.
The moment it entered my bloodstream, my vision began to fade to black.
