BATTLE LINES
Amanda, the reigning Queen of Maplehurst High, had it all: top grades, debate team trophies, and a clique that worshipped her. For three years, she'd ruled the halls with a mix of brains and charisma. Until Josh arrived.
The new kid was a dark horse. Top scorer in math, ace in literature debates, and always the first hand up in class. Amanda's teachers started raving about him. Her friends noticed her glitch.
Amanda stewed in study hall as Josh nailed another question. That night, she texted her BFF, Mirabel: "He thinks he's gonna outshine me?"đ
Mirabel replied: "Amanda, ignore. You're THE Amanda."
But Amanda couldn't. Next day, Josh was chatting with friends about his "crazy rich" parents when Amanda swooped in.
"So, you're the one who thinks you're so special, huh?" she sneered.
Josh blinked, confused. "What?"
"You think you can just wade in here, flaunting your rich parents' money, and everyone'll frown? Newsflash: we don't care about your designer clothes or fancy gadgets".
Josh's friends exchanged awkward glances.
"Amanda, chillâ" one of them started.
"No, I won't chill!", she snapped. "He needs to know he's not the centre of the universe."
Josh finally spoke up, his voice calm but laced with a hint of curiousity. "I was just talking about my parent's business trip. Didn't mean to upset you."
Laptop bag slipped off his shoulder as he shrugged, hitting the floor with a soft thud.
Amanda scoffed, her laughter mocking.
"Save it. You're gonna regret messing with me."
She stormed off, her clique trailing behind like obedient puppies, leaving Josh puzzled.
Josh's friends filled him in: Amanda's been gunning for him. Apparently, she didn't like competition.
"Dude, what did you do?" one of them asked, chuckling nervously.
Josh shook his head. "Nothing, I literally just talked about my parent's trip to Germany."
Lily leaned in "Amanda's like that. Thinks Maplehurst High is her kingdom. You're the new threat."
Josh raised an eyebrow "Threat? Me? I'm just trying to survive this semester."
His friends laughed, but the tension lingered. Josh glanced around â Amanda was watching from across the hall, eyes narrowed.
Cut to lunch. Josh sat with his friends, avoiding Amanda's glare.
Lily leaned over."So, strategy: ignore her or fight back?"
Josh shrugged "Guess I'll ignore."
But Amanda had other plans.
Next day, Josh was called to the principal's office. He walked in, confused.
Principal Pearl looked up, stern."Josh, we take bullying seriously... Amanda said you threatened her.
Josh's eyes widened "What? No,I didn't _"
Principal Pearl sighed. "I'm sorry, Josh. I believe Amanda. One warning: no more incidents. But I'm still going to call your parents."
Amanda stood outside the office, smirking through the glass window.
Josh left, frowning. Amanda's plan workedâbut at what cost?
Meanwhile, Josh's friends rallied.
"She's gone psycho!" Lily texted him "We've got your back."
Josh smiled grimly. Game on.
He started digging up dirt on Amanda â rumors of her hacked school records, secret breakups with married teachers...
Amanda, oblivious, kept escalating. Next, she hacked into the school system and switched Josh's schedule, landing him in the wrong classes.
Josh walked into advanced physics, confused, and found himself seated next to a disgruntled teacher who thought he was a troublemaker.
Teacher: You again. Failing won't help, kid."
Josh: "Uh, I think there's a mistakeâ"
Amanda smirked in the back, but Josh caught her eye. He mugged her a silent "nice try" and pulled out his phone.
Meanwhile, Josh had been secretly documenting Amanda's sabotage. He had screenshots, timestamps and an anonymous whistle-blower email ready.
Amanda's breaking point came when Josh approached her after class.
"You wanna play dirty?" Josh whispered.
"I've got receipts."
Amanda's eyes widened, that meant Game On.
Her face became paled. Josh leaned in, voice low.
"Stop the games. Apologise to the principal, or this goes public."
Amanda snarled, but fear crept in. Josh pulled out his phone, showing her the evidence.
"Fine," she whispered. "I'll apologise."
Next day, Amanda stood before Principal Pearl, voice shaking.
"I falsely accused Josh. I'm so sorry."
The principal glared. "Detention. And as for Josh, he's cleared."
Josh smiled closely as Amanda stormed out. The "battle" was won.
But as he walked away, he bumped into her.
"Truce?" He offered.
Amanda hesitated, then nodded.
"Truce."
They parted waysârivals no more.
Days later, Amanda approached Josh in the library.
"Why didn't you expose me?" she asked, her voice softer now.
Josh shrugged. "Didn't need to. You did enough damage."
Amanda looked away with a flicker of shame.
"Guess I was blind."
Josh smiled. "Guess we both learned."
They exchanged a nod, maybe friendship wasn't off the table.
Weeks passed. Amanda's clique abandoned her; she was now the outcast.
Josh became the new "it" guyâdebate team captain, top grades and Amanda as his unlikely partner in projects.
Amanda started opening up about her pastâher mom's struggles, her dad's expectations.
Josh listened, surprised. Maybe Amanda wasn't just "mean girl" trash.
They worked together on a big project and it went viral.
Amanda: "Guess I owe you one."
Josh: "Guess we're even."
The semester ended. Josh and Amanda parted ways, but they gained a weird sort of respect.
It was holiday time but Amanda and Josh kept seeing each other.
Amanda, getting fed up already, continued to open up to Josh about her home life.
"My parents are suffocating," she said.
"Dad's always on my case about getting too wild, Mom's stressed about money... I just snap at people."
Josh listened, surprised by her vulnerability.
"Have you thought about talking to an adult?" He asked gently.
Amanda scoffed. "Like a therapist?"
Josh nodded. "Yeah. That could help."
Amanda wasn't sure but Josh's calm vibe stuck.
"Okay." She said finally.
First therapy session:
Amanda: "I don't know why I'm here. I just hate everyone at school. "
Therapist: "What does "hating" them feel like?"
Amanda: Like I'm invisible. Like I'll never be good enough."
Therapist: "Sounds like a lot of pressure."
Sessions followed. Amanda unpacked stuffsâanger, fear, sadness.
Amanda: "I feel like I'm losing myself."
Therapist: "You're finding parts of you. That's progress."
With time, Amanda softened. No more outbursts. No more anger.
Josh noticed "You're different."
Amanda smiled weakly. "Therapy is weirdly helping."
Mirabel (Amanda's longtime friend) noticed it too.
"Amanda's actually nice nowđ
." Mirabel teased.
Amanda rolled her eyes, laughing.
Josh became one of Amanda's closest friendsâmaybe_ the closest, asides Mirabel._
Amanda: "Guess I misjudged you."
Josh: "Guess we both grew."
The "Battle line" became blurred since then.
Amanda's therapy sessions became like a routine.
Therapist: "What's that thing that you're proud of this week?"
Amanda: "Standing up for someone without snapping."
Therapist: "That's huge!"
Amanda started writing, pouring out thoughts instead of anger."
She texted Josh: "Would you love to read the poem I wrote?"
Josh replied: "Sure, I'm all ears."
He met her at the park, Amanda read aloud:
"Anger's smoke, it blinds me... But today, I breathed."
Josh smiled đ "That's fire đ„."
Amanda smiled back and they both chatted for a while before heading back to their various homes.
Mirabel dragged her to a school art show and Amanda hesitated.
"Guess I'll survive," she said, eyeing Josh's photography exhibit.
Josh: "Hey! Come check mine."
Amanda smiled "Okay."
They stood by his photoâa blurred cityscape.
Josh: "Blur is like life, right? Edges aren't always sharp."
Amanda nodded and their shoulders touched.
Amanda's life was shaping up. Therapy was like a game changer.
Therapist: "You're owning your emotions. Now,what next?"
Amanda: " I want to fix things."
She started repairing bridgesâstarting with Josh.
Amanda: "Hey, want to grab coffee â?"
Josh: "Sure."
They sipped lattes at a quiet café and things went very well since then.
