SERA.
“You look pale,” Christy suddenly blurted during breakfast and I blinked.
“I’m good,” I whispered, even though my voice gave me away.
“What's wrong Sera?” Christy asked and I looked over to the other side of the table, where what was wrong sat casually and ate his breakfast like he didn't know anything. My mind went back to his face then, the look he gave me before he left the room like nothing happened, like I was doing a normal thing.
“You haven't answered me,” Christy suddenly said, startling me.
“Jeez, I’m fine Christy.”
“Leave her alone,” he finally spoke. “This is a dining table, not a conversation ground.”
Christy scoffed and picked up her spoon. “Boring asshole,” she cursed and my eyes widened, but he didn't say anything, he simply continued eating like she didn't just cuss him out. ‘duh, that's his sister’ my inner voice said and I sighed. Yeah, but it still surprised me. Who would have thought?
“We're going sightseeing today,” Christy said and I froze. Not again, I groaned inwardly. So we can get followed and almost die?
“No.” Damian said flatly and for the first time since I met him, I appreciated him.
“Why?”
“Because my bride has other useful things to do than messing around town,” he said and Christy scoffed again.
“I just want to show my friend around,” Christy protested.
“I said No,” he said and stood up, leaving us alone at the dining table.
“He's so boring,” Christy said and I sighed.
“I don't want to go to town,” I said instead and she looked at me for a second before slowly turning.
“Okay baby,” she finally said. “But you're going to tell me why you've looked pale since morning,” she started again and I stood up.
“Bye Christy,” I said and she stood up too, following me.
“You can't escape this,” she teased and followed me to my room.
I opened the room door and Christy followed me in, I sat down on the bed and she sat with me. I groaned and looked at her then, my face accusing her of what she wasn't even aware of.
“What's that look?” She asked and I sighed.
“It was your fault!” I suddenly accused and she blinked.
“What was my fault?” She asked, oblivious.
“You gave me that advice!” I continued and she raised her eyebrows.
“What advice, Sera?”
“You told me to release tension!”
She looked for a few more seconds before she suddenly burst out laughing. “You didn't release?” She asked amidst laughter and I shook my head, realising I actually didn't release.
“That's not the point. He caught me!” I said and the laughter cut short.
“What!”
“Yeah,” I groaned. “I was sure I closed the door but then I suddenly felt someone in the room and sure as hell, he was looking.”
“Wait,” Christy said and paused. “You're serious?”
“Yeah?”
She gasped then and held my hand. “That must have been weird!”
“It was!” I said and she chuckled. “Do you know the worst part?” I asked and she shook her head. “He left without a word.”
Her eyes widened as she gently released my hands. “Not a word.”
“Not a word.”
“Hmm,” she rested her hand on her jaw. “He liked it,” she said and I gasped.
“What are you saying?”
“That you successfully made Damian De Luca speechless.”
I looked at her for a few seconds before I turned towards the drawer, searching for nothing.
“You're a joker Christy,” I said and she chuckled. “This is all your fault.”
She blinked then. “I don't see the problem here. Well, only that you didn't get the intended release,” she said and I swallowed while suddenly feeling the urge to mess with my fingers.
“Wasn't that the intention,” she asked and I narrowed my eyes.
“I've never released,” I suddenly said and she gasped.
“Like never ever?”
“Like never ever,” I replied and bent my head. I have never told anyone this, because I've always been ashamed but somehow, saying it to Christy was easy. She suddenly held my eyes then.
“It's nothing to be ashamed of, Sera,” she said and I nodded. “We just need to work on that piece of information,” she said and I released her hands.
“Go away,” I said and she chuckled, making me chuckle too. I had really found a friend and it felt good, maybe this would be the only good thing I'd get in the De Luca family.
*************
The housekeeper had told me that Damian wanted to see me in his study and my anxiety returned again. What if he wanted to punish me? Oh God, Christy!
I walked down the corridor slowly, my hands pressed together in front of me, trying to arrange my face into something that looked like a person who wasn't dreading the next five minutes. I stood outside his study door for three full seconds — thinking about the last time I was here and how it didn't end so well. I sighed and was about to knock when—
“I don't have the whole day, Moretti,” his voice sounded and I blinked. Of course, there's a camera.
I pushed the door slowly and walked in, and his eyes almost burned me down. He sat behind his desk, with one of his hands resting on the surface of a folder, he looked disinterested, like whatever I had been thinking about was just my imagination.
“Sit down,” he said flatly and I slowly sat.
“You sent for me,” I whispered but he continued looking at me, like he was searching for an answer.
“You’re my bride now,” he finally started. “And this means that some people will start to target you even though you've done nothing wrong,” he continued and my mind went back to the dark car.
“I’ll be fine,” I said and he scoffed.
“You will be careful,” he corrected and you' will not go anywhere without informing me. Is that noted?” He asked and I slowly nodded.
“Good, you can leave,” he said and I made to leave but—
“They say you bury people alive,” I suddenly blurted and regretted it immediately.
He slowly lifted his eyes to me. Cold, merciless, yet beautiful enough to ruin lives. My hands trembled.
“Only my enemies.”
“You are my enemy,” I whispered, because he was.
“No,” he said and slowly rose from the chair and stopped right in front of me. “You're worse.”
