Chapter 1 - The New House
(Elena’s POV)
The car’s wheels crunched over the gravel driveway, breaking the silence that hung over the estate like a spell. I pressed my forehead lightly against the window, watching as the black iron gates closed behind us, sealing me inside a place that didn’t feel like home.
The mansion was enormous - all sharp angles and cold stone, with ivy crawling up the walls like secrets trying to escape. Even the air here felt heavy, thick with something I couldn’t name.
My mother reached over and squeezed my hand. “Don’t be nervous, sweetheart. Your stepfather’s wonderful, and Adrian-”
I almost laughed. Adrian Blake.
If only she knew.
I’d seen him before. Not here - at school. The kind of boy people warned you about and secretly dreamed of anyway. Every girl whispered his name, and every teacher seemed too scared to challenge him.
And now, somehow, fate had turned him into my stepbrother.
I forced a smile. “Yeah, I’m fine, Mom.”
But I wasn’t. Not even close.
When the car stopped, I stepped out and tilted my head back to take in the massive structure. It looked ancient - more like a gothic castle than a family home. The forest stretched behind it, dark and endless, its trees swaying in a rhythm that didn’t quite belong to the wind.
Then I felt it.
A shiver.
Like the air itself shifted around me.
Someone was watching.
I followed the pull of that unseen gaze, and my eyes found him - standing on the balcony above the grand entrance.
Adrian Blake.
He leaned against the railing, one hand shoved in his pocket, black shirt clinging to the muscles beneath. The fading sunlight hit his face just right, catching in his amber eyes - eyes that glowed faintly, almost too vividly to be human.
For a second, the world stopped breathing.
My pulse jumped, a rush of warmth spreading through me like lightning. I didn’t even know him, yet something inside me did. Something deep and wild whispered his name like a memory.
“Elena, come meet your stepfather!” Mom’s voice broke through the haze.
I blinked and looked down at her - she was already hugging Richard Blake, a tall man with silver at his temples and kind eyes. He greeted me warmly, pulling me into the family I never asked for.
But the warmth of that welcome vanished when I looked back up.
Adrian was still watching me.
By the time we climbed the stairs to the balcony, my heart was pounding so hard I was sure he could hear it. He didn’t move until I stood in front of him.
“So,” he said finally, voice deep and rough, “you’re Elena.”
I nodded. “And you must be Adrian.”
A smirk tugged at his lips. “Guess that makes us family now.”
The way he said family didn’t sound innocent. It felt like a warning… or a promise.
“Adrian,” Richard said sharply, “be polite.”
Adrian gave a lazy shrug and turned to leave, his expression unreadable. I caught a faint scent as he passed - pine, smoke, and rain. It lingered in the air long after he was gone, and my stomach twisted in a way I couldn’t explain.
Mom squeezed my shoulder gently. “Don’t mind him. He just needs time to adjust.”
Adjust?
No. Adrian Blake didn’t look like the type who adjusted to anything.
---
Dinner was… strange.
The table could’ve seated twelve, but it was just the four of us. Mom and Richard talked quietly, their hands occasionally brushing across the table, soft and romantic. I wanted to be happy for her, but the air felt too tense, too charged.
Adrian sat across from me, silent, expression unreadable. Every few minutes, I could feel his gaze flicker up, linger on me for a heartbeat, then drop again.
And every time he looked at me, my body reacted before my brain did. My breath hitched. My heartbeat stumbled.
Once, when I looked up at the same time he did, our eyes met - gold and hazel - and something in the world snapped.
The sound of clinking silverware faded. The room blurred.
It was just him and me.
Then, just as suddenly, he looked away.
---
Later that night, I wandered upstairs, still unsettled. The mansion’s corridors were lined with portraits - old, stern faces that followed me with their eyes. I found my room at the end of the west wing: big, elegant, and far too quiet.
The window overlooked the forest. The moonlight spilled across the floor like silver water, and I stood there for a moment, lost in it.
Something about this place called to me or maybe it was the forest itself, dark and endless, whispering to a part of me I didn’t understand.
“You shouldn’t leave that open,” a voice said behind me.
I jumped, spinning around.
Adrian was in the doorway, his hand resting lazily against the frame.
My heart leaped. “Do you ever knock?”
He tilted his head slightly. “You shouldn’t leave your window open. The woods here aren’t… safe.”
“Safe?” I repeated, trying to sound casual even though my pulse was racing. “Are you saying there are monsters out there?”
Something flickered behind his eyes - amusement, maybe. Or something darker. “Depends on what you call a monster.”
I swallowed. “You’re trying to scare me.”
“Maybe.” His lips curved slightly, but his gaze didn’t waver. “Or maybe I’m trying to warn you.”
His voice dropped lower, the air between us tightening. I could feel his warmth, even from where he stood. My mind screamed to move, to say something - anything - but my body stayed frozen.
For a second, his eyes darkened, the gold bleeding into something almost feral. Then, just as quickly, it was gone.
He turned away, his tone clipped. “Goodnight, Elena.”
And then he was gone, leaving only silence… and the faint sound of my own heartbeat echoing in my ears.
---
I closed the window, but sleep didn’t come easily.
When it finally did, it brought dreams - strange and vivid.
I was running through the forest, barefoot, the moon blazing overhead. The wind howled around me, and from the shadows, a pair of glowing amber eyes watched.
A black wolf emerged from the darkness, massive and beautiful, its fur rippling like night itself. It stopped in front of me, lowering its head.
I should’ve been afraid.
But I wasn’t.
When it looked at me, my heart knew him.
“Elena…”
The sound of my name on his lips - not spoken, but felt - pulled me awake.
I sat up, gasping, my room bathed in moonlight. The curtains fluttered from the open window I was sure I’d closed.
And somewhere, deep in the forest beyond, a wolf howled - low, haunting, and heartbreakingly familiar.
