Gabriella pulled into the driveway, the moonlight casting a silver glow over the familiar contours of her home. As she stepped out of the car, her heart fluttered at the thought of her friends waiting inside. She could already hear Sam’s excited chatter and Dominic’s easy laughter floating through the door.
“So, how did it go?” Sam squealed the moment Gabriella entered, her eyes wide with anticipation, while Dominic, sharing the space with her, pretended to cover his ears in mock defense against the onslaught of excitement.
“It went well,” Gabriella said absentmindedly, her mind still lost in the warmth of Mark’s presence.
“That’s all? ‘It went well?’” Sam persisted, her voice rising in playful incredulity, searching for more than just the safe response her best friend had given. Gabriella managed a smile, enjoying the way Sam always pushed for details.
“Gabriella? Hello? Are you listening?” Sam’s voice broke through Gabriella’s reverie, pulling her back with an affectionate nudge.
“What?” Gabriella blinked, finally coming back down to Earth.
“Okay, spill it! We want the juicy details!” Sam said, eyeing her in suspicion. There was something in Gabriella’s demeanor that told Sam this was no ordinary day.
With a smile that hinted at secrets she wasn’t quite ready to share, Gabriella walked deeper into the house.
“Hey, who wants to go Black Friday shopping?” Dominic chimed in, desperate to change the subject, his eyes lighting up at the thought of deals and adventure.
“I’m not up for it,” Gabriella replied quickly, the idea of bustling crowds and endless aisles not appealing to her right now.
“What happened? You were so excited about it earlier!” Dominic shot her a bewildered glance, both of his brows furrowing in annoyance.
“I’m just tired,” she said with a wave of her hand. The truth was, she wanted nothing more than to be alone with her thoughts of Mark, and she openly confessed, “Honestly, I just want to talk to Mark.”
Sam’s eyes sparkled with an idea. “Why don’t you text Mark and ask if he wants to hang out while we shop?”
Gabriella hesitated, the prospect of intruding again nipping at her thoughts. “But I just left there…I don’t know if he’s up for it,” she protested.
“Just text him! Let’s find out,” Sam nudged her playfully.
With a sigh of resignation, Gabriella pulled out her phone, her heart thumping in her chest as she typed, “Hey, I was wondering, while my friends were Black Friday shopping, could we hang out?” Her thumb hesitated over the ‘send’ icon, but finally, she pressed it and noticed how her heart raced.
Within moments, her phone buzzed with a reply from Mark: “Yeah, that’s fine! My aunt and uncle are gone, and my grandmother and daughter are asleep. See you soon!”
Her eyes lit up with joy, and she and Sam squealed together, excitement bubbling between the two friends. “Let’s get going!” Gabriella declared, racing to her bedroom to change quickly into a cozy hoodie and jeans.
They all hopped into their respective cars, and as Dominic and Sam giggled in theirs, Gabriella felt the thrill of anticipation. This night had the potential to be special.
