Chapter One
Sasha’s POV
This can’t be happening I thought as I stared at the only father figure I have ever known. I’m in a state of shock and confusion after listening to him.
“How could you do this to me?” I asked in disbelief
“Look, am sorry things turned out this way but there is nothing I can do at this moment”
“How can you just stand there and say that to me?” I asked visibly shaking with anger
“I always warned you of the way you gamble but you never listen to me now look where it has gotten us” I finished breaking down in tears
“Listen to me, this is hard for me as well. Selling you like a piece of ornament was never my intention” he said as he walked up to me placing both his hands on my shoulder.
I do believe him. Even though he is not my real father, he has been nothing but kind to me, since he adopted me twenty years ago. Even with his beautiful heart, he always had one flaw: gambling.
“Am not saying this to make you feel better but the agreement was you will be with him until you bear him an heir.”
I slowly turn away from him to stare out the window with tears still in my eyes. This was the scariest proposal I have ever heard and the worst part of it was there was no visible escape for me.
From what I could make out from his story, he owed the casino he frequented a large sum of money and was not able to pay. In that regard, he had dodged the place a few times but unfortunately, he was caught this time around.
He almost lost his life in the process but for some crazy reason, the man known as the ice prince due to his cold nature, the alpha king of the Fiery pack came to his rescue and promised to pay his debt on the agreement that I become his mate and bare him an heir.
Finally, able to gain control over my emotions I said
“I really appreciate what he has done for us. Saving your life, but why me?” I asked turning back to face Kane.
“Am sorry honey but I have no answer to that question”
“For a man such as him, he could have anybody, yet he sought me out.”
Can it be assumed that he chose me because he knew I had no mate? But how is that possible, we have never met before. I thought.
Heaving a sigh, I asked
“When am I leaving?”
“Tomorrow” he coughed
I inhaled sharply at his reply. I wanted to argue but it was obvious this was difficult for him as well from the way he fidgeted moving his weight from one foot to another.
“Guess I have some packing to do.” Moving as fast as my legs can carry me, I enter my room shutting the door behind me. Quickly I take out my bag before I could change my mind and begin stuffing my things inside.
Two hours later am done packing. Tired and depressed I lay on my bed curling into a ball I cried myself to sleep.
I woke the following morning to the sound of my blaring alarm. For a second, I was in a state of limbo before reality crashed into me. Having accepted my fate, I slowly got out of bed and dragged myself to the bathroom. Taking a quick look in the mirror, I barely recognize the face that stared back at me.
In the mirror, I saw a woman with tangled brown hair, dull puffy green eyes, and lips pursed together as if trying to stop any further tears. Without a second look, I quickly brush my teeth, take a shower and dress up.
With my bags neatly packed, and nothing to do, I waited for the ride that is supposed to take me to my new prison. Looking out the window, my stomach grumbled in protest reminding me that am yet to have breakfast. But am too nervous to have any. The sound of a car’s horn broke into my thought.
Taking another look out the window confirmed the arrival of my driver. I thought of going to bid my stepfather goodbye but I couldn’t bear the thought. So, I quietly leave my home and walked over to the car.
With only a word of greeting, the driver took my bag and opened the door for me. Smiling my gratitude to him, I take a last look at the only place I have called home for so long. Just when I was about to step into the car, I spotted Kane by the window side staring down at me with sadness and pity. Barely able to hold back my tears, I duck my head into the car.
***
Stepping out of the car, am left astonished at how big and beautiful the house I was about to spend a part of my life in, was. No, it was too belittling to call it a house. It was more like a palace, the type you only read about in Regency novels.
I have been left stunned since we drove into the path labeled Draco’s property. His land was a very massive field with a clear lake that ran through it. The whole place fascinated and enchanted me. The very thought I had of being the proverbial sheep going to the slaughter flew out the moment I rolled down the window to take a better look at my surrounding.
The whole place commanded reverence and it will be remiss of me if I did not accord it the due respect it deserved. I was surprised to note the number of people that worked in the fields. It was obvious they all lived here from the number of cottages spread out.
Taking a long deep breath, I walked up to the massive door only before I could knock, it was opened by a middle-aged man with silvery hair who did not look more than fifty. It was obvious from his dressing that he was the butler of the household. With a small bow, he ushered me into the house.
“Welcome, the master informed me of your coming. Please follow me, he asked me to direct you to his study upon your arrival. He will attend to you there.”
At his words, my heart skipped a beat. In my awe, I had totally forgotten the reason I was here in the first place. For a second I wanted to turn around and bolt through the door. But I steadied myself with deep breaths.
“Please lead the way,” I said, my voice sounding a bit foreign to me.
As I followed his back, I could not help but wonder what the infamous alpha will look like. But I was in for a shock.
Finally, in front of his study, the butler ushered me in. Thanking him, I walked inside to meet a broad back.
Swallowing hard, I greeted “Hello”
The instant he turned, I am left stunned again.
From the stories I have heard I expected to meet a middle-aged grumpy man. Hell, I expected to see an ugly beast but instead, I looked at the face of the most handsome man I have ever met. With hair as black as night, blue eyes that seem to draw me in, an aristocratic nose, and a mouth begging to be kissed, there was no doubt that he was blessed by the moon goddess with excellent genes.
Before I could shut my open mouth, I felt something quicken inside of me and I heard my wolf for the first time since my eighteenth birthday speak. It said: mine.
“Oh no, not him.”
