36 It was lucky I didn’t run into any traffic cops on the way home. My tires didn’t spin pulling out of Ralph’s driveway, but I wasn’t entirely successful at keeping my speed under control. I generally have a good poker face, but I didn’t exactly want to be pulled over by a cop right after one of my best friends confessed that he’d murdered someone. Well, killed someone, anyway. It’d probably technically be manslaughter—not murder, but still homicide—if they believed him. And that was a big “if,” especially with the subsequent cover-up. I drove to my office and unloaded all of my crap from the rental into Cecil, then dropped the rental off and hiked back to my office. I wasn’t really dressed for the night chill, but walking uphill (and my temper) helped me stay warm. Downtown Tallahassee
