She walked out holding the hand of a little girl with brown, curly hair and blue eyes. She was skipping and was actually very cute, but I still couldn't help but feel hurt. She already had a child with another man, how could I ever imagine taking her as my own now?
She started driving away so I continued to follow her. I had to see her husband for myself. I had to know if he deserved her as much as I did. I watched as she stopped by her mail box and then pulled into her driveway. I parked down the street and then waited for sundown as my cover.
She had a nice house, it was on the larger end and was white with vertical paneling. The door was a dark red and the windows had black shutters on either side of them. It had a large wooden porch with plants and decor making it look very homey. There were 2 large trees in the front yard, providing some great shade and giving the house an almost fairytale-like appearance.
Once nighttime hit, I hopped over the fence and peeked through the corners of the window to see if I could find them. They were having dinner together on the kitchen island. I finally got a good look at my competition and my jealousy hit an all time high.
(***trigger warning: domestic violence)
He had brown hair with bright eyes and seemed almost as built as me. I guess he would be considered handsome but to me, he looked like he was not good enough for my mate.
As they were finishing up their meal and cleaning up, Rowan brought over a piece of paper that looked like a statement to him and started pointing at it in what seemed to be anger. I put my ear up to the window to better hear the conversation.
"... this is the third time in the last 2 months. If you didn't want to hurt me, why do you keep doing this?" she said it quietly enough to not disturb their daughter that was playing nearby in the living room.
"I f****d up. I have a problem and I just need to stop. I really don't want to hurt you, " he said with desperation.
"You've said that countless times before. I'm starting to believe that I really don't mean anything to you. " she responded.
"Believe whatever you want but I said I'm sorry." Now he just sounded annoyed that she didn't just give into his claims. My wolf growled, wanting to tear his head off.
"Um when did you say you were sorry?" she asked him with irritation in her voice.
"Just now, when I said that." He acted like it was so obvious. Goddess I really hated that guy even more now.
"Wow, thanks for the heartfelt apology. I can really feel that you mean it. " she said sarcastically.
"You know what? Whatever. This is exactly the reason I cheat on you. You're always being a nagging b***h. And you never want to f**k anymore. Obviously you're not attracted to me anymore, I bet you're f*****g someone else aren't you?" his voice was rising and it took all I had to stop myself from rushing in there and knocking his ass out.
"Wow, way to spin this around on me to make yourself the victim. First of all, why would I want to f**k someone who cheats on me all the time? And second, unlike you I'm faithful and have never given you any reason to think otherwise. If I'm so awful, why don't you go be with one of those w***e's you cheat on me with?" She was holding her own and I was proud of her.
"Because I'm not letting you take my daughter away from me. And I actually love you, you just never want to f**k more than once a week which clearly shows that you don't love me anymore." I clenched my jaw at the mention of this guy getting to sleep with my mate. I could already tell he was such a narcissist.
"I would NEVER take her from you. If that's the only reason you stay then just know that and feel free to leave. I'm SICK of being cheated on. Do you understand how much it hurts knowing that you're not good enough? No of course you don't because I'm always faithful no matter how much you hurt me!" her voice was raised and she started crying.
"Don't you start crying, you pathetic b***h!" He grabbed one of the glass cups on the counter and smashed it on the floor. She screamed and looked at her daughter who started screaming and crying. My wolf was jumping around, eager to get out and tear him to pieces.
"Look what you're doing to her! Stop this right now!" She yelled at him.
"SHE'S ONLY SCARED BECAUSE YOU'RE SCREECHING LIKE A CRAZY b***h!" He roared at her. Then he shoved her against the wall and choked her with his huge hand. She gasped for air and clawed at his hands to no avail. I was about break in there to stop him when she looked over at her daughter and he followed suit. I could barely hold my wolf back from coming out.
Their daughter was bawling her eyes out and screaming "MOMMY!"
He finally dropped her and she fell to a crumpled heap on the floor, taking ragged breaths.
"Turn her against me all you want. I'm out." The coward left her on the floor and grabbed his jacket, slamming the front door behind him. I heard the sounds of tires screeching as he peeled out of the driveway, heading to Goddess-knows-where.
Once she could breathe again, she ran over to where her daughter was standing, bawling her eyes out. She wrapped her arms around her and held her while they both cried. She quietly said, "I'm so sorry," over and over as if this was all her fault.
When they finally calmed down, she pulled back from her daughter and brushed away the tears from her puffy eyes and cheeks and pushed the hair out of her face. She cupped her little face in her hands and told her, "I love you so so much. You are my everything, never forget that, okay baby?" to which her daughter nodded.
She kissed her on the forehead and then asked with a small smile, "How about we get you a cookie and put your favorite show on before bed, would you like that?"
Her daughter nodded excitedly and ran away squealing. Rowan walked over to the pantry and pulled out a cookie and disappeared. I waited for 5 minutes, just when I was about to leave, she reappeared. She grabbed a broom and started sweeping up the glass that was left behind by her monstrous husband.
After she dumped it, she backed up against the wall and slid down to where her knees were up to her chest. She wrapped her arms around them and ducked her head and cried quietly. "Why are you doing this to me, God? What have I done to deserve this? Please stop this, Lina deserves better than this. Please. Just please..." She cried. It broke my heart to see her this way, I wanted nothing more than to go in there and hold her. But I restrained myself so I wouldn't terrify her any further.
This is why the Moon Goddess gave her to me. I was meant to save her and her daughter, to protect them from that monster. I'll be damned if I let him hurt her again.
Reluctantly, I pulled myself away from the window and walked back to the car. If I stayed any longer, I wouldn't be able to leave. I walked back to my SUV and started the car, my heart breaking into a million pieces for my mate.
I would show her that she could be happy. With me.
I drove back to my pack house which was about 20 minutes from her house. Upon entering my office, Arik greeted me saying "That was a loooooong appointment," wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.
"Well, I found my mate." I sighed.
"What? Man that's great!" He clapped me on the back with excitement.
"Well, it would be if she wasn't married with a child." I grumbled. Arik's smile faltered and his eyebrows furrowed.
"But that's not the worst part. I followed her home so I could see the guy and when they were done with dinner, she was confronting him about something I think to do with cheating." I said gravely.
"Oh man..." Arik said quietly.
"And as if that's not bad enough, he basically blamed it on her, then smashed a glass at her feet. Then when she started crying, he shoved her into the wall and choked her until their little girl was screaming 'mommy'. He blamed her for turning their daughter against him, then left her there on the floor." My hand curled into a fist and I smacked my hand on my desk as I leaned over on it.
Arik looked equally angry at what my mate was going through. "We'll get her away from him. She'll be safe here, and her little girl. You just need to convince her to leave."
"I told her I would be back at 10 in the morning tomorrow to go over the plans for the shirts so I plan on bringing her coffee and inviting her to lunch. I have to show her she can trust me and maybe open up to me about her husband." He nodded in response.
"Well you better get some sleep then, I have a feeling you're gonna have a hard time tonight knowing what kind of man your mate is living with." I nodded and mumbled a goodnight to him as I walked to my bedroom.
Arik was right, I tossed and turned all night, thinking about what I had seen. Even my dreams were filled with visions of her crying and not being able to hold her.
I had to help her, I would stop at nothing to free her from her misery.
