Infected inside (chapter 8)

1030 Words
I was huddled on the floor and shaking uncontrollably when the helicopter landed and their paramedics came running over to me. They checked me over and once satisfied finally took notice of Liam beside me. I could see they were going to leave him and snapped, “he comes with us, he deserves to be buried and respected for his service. He is the only reason I’m still alive.” They gave each other a quick look and then nodded at my request and began pulling him out from underneath the dead zombies. I helped them carry him back to the helicopter and sat beside him once we were on there. As we flew into the air and away from this madness I stroked his hair and began to sob quietly. Everything I had learnt had been from him and I prayed hard that he was with dodge now. It was still dark outside when we landed but I wasn’t blind. We were in another state but it was different here. As we were lowering closer towards the ground I could see the stretch of cities and towns and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Streets were busy with people, normal people. They were shopping in late night shops or coming out of bars drunk and happy, there was no sign, absolutely none, that zombies had ever existed here or even reached here. I was confused as hell but too exhausted to dwell on it right this minute. We landed at some kind of base I guessed and let one of the soldiers lead me inside the building. Lights flickered on as we made our down the hospital looking corridor. He led me further down and we turned right and kept making our way until he stopped us. I watched this man who looked to be in his fifties with greying hair, pull out a key from his pocket and open the door to a room that definitely looked like a hospital room, from the bed with thin sheets to the monitor beside it. “The boss will be with you soon, get comfortable,” he said and then left me alone closing the door behind him. Being alone made me feel worse. I was left with nothing but the memories of what had happened today, replaying in my mind over and over again. I tried to lay down on the bed but couldn’t get comfortable. I don’t know how long had passed when the door finally knocked softly and a female entered my room. “Hello, miss winters, my name is dr. Silvia.” I sat up and shook her outstretched hand. “What’s going on?” I asked. She sat on the bed beside me and answered, “I own a company called WIC. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of us before but we are scientists. We have managed to get rid of the last remaining infected and you should be safe now.” I remembered that name from somewhere and it took me a moment to remember where from. University. The company that had visited the science class and the explosion that had happened. The beginning of where this had all started. “You’re the reason people got infected in the first place!” I yelled. And got up on my feet wanting to get away from her. She looked startled before quickly composing herself and stood up too. “Miss winters, I can assure you we did not intend for this to happen, even now we still aren’t sure how this came to be but you be assured we are doing our absolute best to create a cure and make sure this never happens again.” I don’t know why but I just didn’t believe her. I ran out of the room not knowing where I was going but knowing I had to get away. An alarm sounded making me jump but I didn’t slow down. I ran down rows of corridors and then down some stairs until I found an unlocked room and ran inside locking it behind me. I looked around while I was catching my breath and saw some files sitting on a lab table. I went over and looked at them. Everything I was seeing and reading was filling me rage, pure rage. This experiment had been made on purpose and released. The news had been fake. The whole world hadn’t been infected. Only my state had been infected…on purpose. They had quarantined our state and made up some false reason to anyone wanting to come in as to what was going on. They wanted to see how this virus worked. I looked at another file and saw Liams face. I turned the page and saw mine too. They had been watching us all this time. They had watched us through cameras, cctv cameras and waited to see how we would survive and how long it would take for us to die. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, we had been an experiment for them, to see how humans would react in a real zombie apocalypse and if it was possible to survive one. I couldn’t read anymore. I threw the files to the floor and looked around for something I could use to burn this s**t hole to the ground. I found a bunsing burner and set it up. When the fire came to life I grabbed a file off the floor and set it alight throwing it back to the floor and letting the flames spread. I could hear people running and knew they were trying to find me. I left quietly and found a back door fire exit. When I heard footsteps behind me I ran. I ran and ran until I came onto a street filled with people. I looked behind me and saw two soldiers gaining on me and ran faster. I disappeared into the crowd of people and entered a shop, hiding behind a shelf I watched as the soldiers ran past and I made a vow. This was not the end, I would come back for them and I would get justice for Liam.
