Infected inside (chapter 2)

508 Words
A month had passed since that day in university and the virus, as they were now calling it, had spread like wildfire. There were only a handful of people left in our city and the last time I had watched the news it sounded like it would be only a matter of weeks now before it affected not just the country but the world. The virus took over its hosts body within fifteen minutes, turning them into rabid, aggressive, cannibalistic personalities. That’s how the scientists had been describing it, like it worked in a similar way to rabies and the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis fungus but the more time that passed the more people were starting to actually believe it was literally a virus that turned you into a zombie. I agreed and I also believed it had been human made by the company BHS. It was around midnight right now and hauling my big black backpack up onto my shoulders I started making my down the streets using the alleyways and checking corners before carrying on my journey. It was raining heavily and I used the sound of the rain and wind to my advantage as I crept by two zombies eating the corpse of a dog on the floor. Pulling my hood tighter around my face I slowly walked by them, a male and a female, trying to ignore the sounds of them tearing at flesh and bone. I didn’t breathe until I was safely around the corner but as I looked up my heart dropped and terror filled my body so that I froze. Four zombies were wandering around the alleyway and all four turned and looked up at me when I had stepped on a candy wrapper. It was ok to get scratched by them but you absolutely did not want to get bitten or any spit on you as it was the saliva that carried the virus. I slowly moved a step back not wanting to alert the ones I had just crept past earlier but it was too late, as soon as I took that step they sprang into motion and ran for me, yes, they ran, they did not shamble along slowly like in the movies, not unless they were badly injured and falling apart. These zombies looked fresh as a daisy except for the orange eyes that were glowing violently in the darkness. I turned and ran. I ran as fast as I could and prayed I wouldn’t trip up, if I fell that would be it, I would be dead or worse, end up like them. I ran until my lungs burned and ached, I had no idea where I was running to, I had been walking through the streets of shops and now I wasn’t sure where I was all I knew was that I absolutely could not stop running. I ran until there was nowhere left to turn except down another alleyway. f**k! Running down to the end I was met by a fence, there was no way out.
