Enemies in the Dark

Part 1 Adrian pulled Elena behind a stack of wooden crates just as the armed men spread through the warehouse. “Stay quiet,” he whispered. Elena’s back pressed against the cold wood as she tried to slow her breathing. From the narrow gap between the crates, she could see the men clearly now. Five of them. All dressed in dark clothes. All carrying guns. They moved like professionals. One of them kicked a crate open, splintering the wood. “Search everything,” the man ordered. “The boss said the shipment is here.” Elena’s eyes widened slightly. Shipment? Her mind raced with questions, but she didn’t dare speak. Adrian stood beside her in the shadows, his body tense and alert. His gaze followed every movement the men made, calculating. She glanced up at him. “You said this place was dangerous,” she whispered. Adrian didn’t look at her. “I said you didn’t understand what you were stepping into.” Another loud crash echoed across the warehouse as one of the men forced open another crate. Inside were several black metal cases. Weapons. Elena’s stomach tightened. The man grinned. “Jackpot.” Adrian’s jaw clenched. Elena noticed. “You didn’t expect this,” she murmured. “No,” Adrian said quietly. Then his eyes moved toward the entrance. “Which means someone leaked the location.” The armed men continued opening crates, checking the contents. One of them suddenly turned toward the area where Adrian and Elena were hiding. Elena held her breath. The man slowly began walking in their direction. Step. Step. Step. Adrian gently grabbed Elena’s arm and pulled her closer behind the crates. She could feel the heat of his body next to hers now, their shoulders almost touching. The footsteps grew louder. Closer. Elena’s heart pounded so hard she was certain the man could hear it. Then— A phone rang somewhere across the warehouse. The man stopped walking. Annoyed, he turned and walked away to answer it. Elena quietly exhaled. “That was close,” she whispered. Adrian finally looked at her. “You’re surprisingly calm for someone hiding from armed criminals.” She gave him a small, tense smile. “Journalism training.” Adrian almost smirked. But the moment didn’t last. Because the man on the phone suddenly shouted across the warehouse. “Boss says the heir might be here tonight.” Every muscle in Adrian’s body went still. Elena looked at him. “They’re looking for you,” she whispered. Adrian’s eyes darkened. “Yes.” The armed men immediately began spreading out again, searching more aggressively. One of them c****d his gun. “Find him.” Elena’s stomach dropped. They weren’t just here for the weapons. They were hunting Adrian Volkov. Part 2 The warehouse had turned into a trap. Elena could feel it. The armed men were now moving carefully between the crates, checking every corner. The leader’s voice echoed through the building. “Spread out! He’s here somewhere.” Adrian’s gaze scanned the area quickly. Five men. Two near the truck. One by the crates. Two moving toward the back. His mind was already calculating the odds. Not good. He turned to Elena. “When I say run,” he whispered, “you run straight for the back exit.” Her eyes narrowed. “And leave you here?” “Yes.” “Not happening.” Adrian frowned slightly. “This isn’t a debate.” Elena crossed her arms. “You dragged me into this mess.” “You dragged yourself into it.” “Then we’re both getting out.” Adrian stared at her for a moment. Most people panicked in situations like this. Elena Carter argued. It was… impressive. And extremely inconvenient. Before he could respond, a loud bang echoed through the warehouse. One of the men had kicked over a metal crate. The noise made the others turn toward the sound. Adrian’s eyes sharpened. Opportunity. He leaned closer to Elena. “When I move, follow me.” She nodded. Adrian grabbed a loose metal pipe lying beside the crate. Then, with sudden speed, he threw it across the warehouse floor. The pipe clanged loudly as it slid across the concrete. The armed men immediately turned toward the noise. “What was that?” “Over there!” They rushed toward the opposite side of the warehouse. Adrian grabbed Elena’s hand. “Now.” They moved quickly through the shadows between the crates, keeping low and silent. Elena’s heart pounded as they slipped toward the back exit. They were almost there. Ten more steps. Then a voice shouted behind them. “Hey!” Elena’s blood froze. One of the men had spotted them. “Stop!” A gunshot exploded. The bullet slammed into a metal crate beside them, sending sparks flying. Adrian immediately pulled Elena down behind a stack of boxes. Another shot rang out. “Stay down,” he ordered. Elena looked at him, her pulse racing. “You’re really popular tonight.” Adrian didn’t respond. His focus was already locked on the approaching men. Two of them were running toward their position now. Fast. Adrian looked toward the exit door only a few meters away. Then back at the men. He made a quick decision. He grabbed Elena’s hand again. “Ready?” “For what?” Adrian’s eyes flashed with something dangerous. “We’re running.” Another gunshot echoed through the warehouse. And Adrian Volkov pulled Elena Carter into the darkness as the chase began.
