The Awakening of the Lost Bloodline
The first arrow missed her heart by an inch. Lyra Hale barely felt the wind cut her cheek before the arrow slammed into the tree behind her. She kept running. Stopping would mean dying. Blackwood Forest was legendary for all the wrong reasons. Folks in Ashridge wouldn’t even go near it, not after dark. They traded stories about monsters that moved between ancient trees. Lyra always rolled her eyes at those tales. Tonight, she finally got it. There were heavy footsteps coming up behind her. Not human. Not even close. Whatever was out there moved faster, stronger, like it was built to hunt. She could hear a man yelling in the distance, voice bouncing off the trunks. “Find her! She cannot escape the forest!” Her breath came out in ragged bursts as she pushed through the thick underbrush. Her heart hammered, way too loud. She just knew they could hear it. Lyra had no idea why they wanted her, or who “they” even were. The only thing she understood clear as the stars above was that they wanted her dead. Just hours ago she was cleaning up at the diner, grumbling about greasy plates and late shifts. Now she was sprinting through forbidden woods, chased by men with weapons and eyes that glowed in the dark. There was no going back. Everything normal about her life vanished the second they found her. She couldn’t forget their faces. How they looked at her afraid, shocked, almost hateful. The worst was the one man who seemed to know her. He’d whispered, “The White Wolf.” Those words clung to her like cobwebs. Lyra believed she was just a regular girl for nineteen years. A nobody, an orphan Victor Hale took in and raised as his own. She didn’t remember her real parents. She just had those strange dreams every full moon: a woman crying, a castle on fire, a huge white wolf under a silver moon. Always the same wolf. She always woke up before she saw its face. Until tonight. A low growl cut through the night. Lyra froze and turned. Two golden eyes watched her from the shadows. A wolf, but not any wolf she’d heard about it was massive, heavy as a horse, claws deep in the dirt. Lyra took a shaky step back. “No…” The beast crouched, ready to leap. Lyra braced herself. But a voice sliced through the silence calm, quiet, commanding. “Enough.” The wolf stopped cold. A man stepped forward out of the gloom. Lyra couldn’t look away. He was tall and lean, danger wrapped in a dark coat. His hair was black, eyes pale and sharp. Every move said he owned this forest. The wolf bowed its head to him. That sent a chill down her back. The animal wasn’t scared of him; it respected him. He studied her for a long moment. Something shifted in his eyes recognition, maybe even fear. “Lyra Hale,” he said. Her blood iced over. “How do you know my name?” He didn’t answer. “You need to come with me.” She almost laughed. “You expect me to follow you? After sending wolves to kill me?” He didn’t even flinch. “I didn’t send them.” “Then who did?” Another figure stepped out of the darkness behind him a younger man with brown hair, eyes locked and serious. “Alpha Kaiden.” Lyra frowned. Alpha? The younger man’s voice was tense. “Darius Bloodmoon knows she’s awake.” Something passed over Kaiden’s face, dark and furious. “How long?” “Not long. His hunters are already close.” Kaiden’s attention snapped back to Lyra. “You’re in more danger than you think.” She clenched her fists. “Who are you people?” Kaiden stepped closer. “I’m Kaiden Blackthorn.” He kept going, voice low and steady. “You are the Alpha of the Shadow Fang Pack,” he said, as if the forest itself listened. “And you…” His gaze pinned her. “…are the last White Wolf.” All sound drained out of the night. Lyra just shook her head. “That’s not possible. The White Wolves vanished a hundred years ago.” Kaiden’s voice dropped. “Someone made sure everyone believed that.” That heavy, cold feeling settled in her bones. “And what does that mean?” Before anyone could answer, a long howl echoed through the trees. Not just one dozens. The younger man stiffened. “They found us.” Kaiden turned, face tight. “They’re here.” Trees shuddered as figures poured from the shadows. A whole pack, led by a man in a black cloak whose eyes burned red. He smiled just a little. “After all these years…” His gaze locked on Lyra. “The last White Wolf finally reveals herself.” Kaiden moved in front of her, all taut and ready. “Alpha Darius Bloodmoon.” Darius smiled, amused. “Kaiden Blackthorn.” The way they glared at each other, it was clear: this wasn’t their first fight. Darius’ smirk cut deeper. “You’re still your father’s greatest mistake.” Kaiden’s jaw worked, trying to keep steady. “And you’re still clinging to dead men’s victories.” Darius shrugged off the insult, his attention back on Lyra. “Do you even know what you are, little wolf?” Lyra didn’t answer. He grinned. “You’re the key to ruling every pack there is.” The air shifted warmer, sharper. Lyra’s pulse thudded. The wolves grew restless, senses on edge. Kaiden noticed it right away. He backed up. “Lyra…your wolf…” Pain ripped through her, hot and sudden. She dropped to her knees as everything hushed birds, wind, all of it. Even the moon changed, turning a perfect, white-silver overhead. And that’s when it happened. After a century of silence, a White Wolf howled again. And the whole world heard it.
