Chapter 1
Sofia POV
It's been five long years, and my marriage has been a battlefield without children.
Everyday, Damian Holt, my husband, who has become my tormentor always reminds me of what I couldn’t give him.
It was another day, and another morning.
My hands were trembling terribly like hell, as I held tightly the pregnancy test in the bathroom. I took a deep breath in, and sharply breath out. My chest rising and falling like I had been engaged in hard labor.
I was praying so much for a miracle I thought would never come.
The whole world stood in a place when I saw it—two pink lines. My knees didn't know when they gave me away and I dropped down to the cold tiles with a choked cry and a dry throat.
I just couldn't hold it anymore as I let the tears of relief stream down my cheeks as laughter broke out of me in little gasps.
Like for real?
I’m pregnant?
Me?
After five years of empty arms and silent nights, I finally had the proof in my hand. A baby I can call my own.
My head almost bursted. I froze and I imagined Damian smiling at me for the first time in five years.
For once, I imagined my husband being kind to me. Maybe this beautiful news would make him love me like when we were dating, maybe he would finally see me as more than an unfruitful land or a burden.
My brain went back to his coldness towards me but I brushed it off immediately. I wiped my tears quickly, and I rushed to the kitchen. My heart filled with excitement as I prepared his favorite meal.
Tonight, I told myself, would be the start of something new. I won't wait, I would go to his company and surprise him, not just with dinner, but with the news that would change our relationship.

Later that night, I was at Damian's company and I headed to his office with a bright smile on my face.
“Mhmm…”
Suddenly, my smile vanished. I frowned and my hand twitched. Was I hearing it right? It couldn't be. I stood by the door of Damian's office, unwilling to open it.
That was a woman's voice inside my husband's office, and it sounded familiar.
“Aah… Vanessa!”
My stepsister? With my husband?
I could hear the sound of my heart beat faster, and the food flask I held on to felt heavy.
I forced myself not to believe that there was any way my husband, the man I thought had pride, the no-nonsense and neat man was having an affair with my sister that almost every man in the city knows about her and her dirty games. I had to see for myself.
I finally opened the door of his office at the continuous moan and grunt of a woman and a man.
My eyes widened in shock and I gaped. The food flask slipped from my hand, as it stumbled to the floor, and the food I had prepared was ruined.
“Sofia…” Damian reflexively turned to the noise of the food flask. Vanessa perched close against him, and I could see the stain of her lipstick on his mouth.
He was shirtless, and the zip of his trousers was opened. I know he has been cold to me, but I didn't know he would cheat on me, especially with my stepsister.
I staggered helplessly. Instead of feeling ashamed, they angrily sighed at my presence like I was an intruder.
Damian's jaw clenched. “What are you doing in my office?”
“She didn't even care to knock.” Vanessa smirked, leaning to peck Damian by the neck. My husband was having an affair with my stepsister, and I knew nothing about it until today.
As if that was not enough, Damian said coldly, “Well, either way, I don't think there's any better time than now to announce to you that Vanessa here is pregnant for me.”
Pregnant?
My heart felt like it stopped beating. He didn't even wait for me to register what was happening at the moment.
I opened my mouth to talk, but no sound came out. I was confused about where to even start.
Should I begin by asking how long he had been in an affair with her, or should I tell him the news about my pregnancy?
This infidelity was utterly shocking.
“W…w—what?” My voice trembled. “She's pregnant for you?”
“You heard it right Sofia, I'm two months pregnant,” Vanessa replied in delight, sitting leisurely on Damian's lap like it was her territory.
Damian's irritation flickered, and I saw guilt in his eyes before he gently pushed her off. “Face it Sofia, she's giving me what you couldn't give to me in five years!"
“When did this start?” A demanding question came out of my mouth.
“Leave this office this moment.” Damian snapped, dragging a hand through his hair in frustration.
“Damian!” I yelled as I broke down more.
Vanessa stepped forward, trying to shove me out towards the door.
“Leave now while he's still being nice.”
“Don't you dare touch me!” I warned Vanessa. Then I turned to Damian. “I have always been a good wife to you, I do everything like a full-time housewife, just to make a good impression on you. Was that never enough?”
He brushed his finger across his mouth, removing lipstick. The sight of it again made tears fall from my right eye.
“You weren't befitting as a wife, but as a maid. You were never enough, Sofia.”
His tone was harsh, it made me wonder if there was more than just cruelty behind his words. But before I could think of it, he sneered. “Now, get out before I lose my temper.”
I thought I could use the news of my pregnancy to make him treat me better as his wife. I can't believe I've been so unmindful of my husband's affair with Vanessa.
Vanessa nonchalantly touched her stomach and rubbed it with a smile at me when she saw my disappointed gaze at her. She had fooled me and I won't blame her, because her mother was nothing different.
Now, her womb was carrying Damian's child, and it was part of the reasons I will keep my good news to myself. And I will make sure Damian never knows about my pregnancy.
While they both stared at me speechlessly, I turned to the door with the little strength I had left and walked out of the office.
