Prologue
Twenty Years Ago The rain had never fallen so fiercely. It poured from the heavens in silver sheets, crashing against the crystal towers of the Rain Palace until the entire kingdom seemed to disappear beneath a curtain of water. Rivers overflowed their banks, waterfalls roared through marble gardens, and every banner bearing the silver raindrop crest whipped violently in the storm. The people of the Rain House believed rain was a blessing. Tonight, it felt like a warning. Lightning split the sky above the palace, illuminating the sprawling fortress that stood upon the cliffs overlooking the Endless Sea. The palace was unlike any other in the Fae Realm. Its towers were carved from pale blue crystal that shimmered beneath every drop of rain, while streams of enchanted water flowed through its halls instead of ordinary fountains. Every wall carried ancient carvings of waves, storms, and clouds-the symbols of a bloodline that had ruled the Rain House for centuries. Yet beneath its beauty, fear lingered. Servants hurried through the corridors with lowered heads. Palace guards tightened their grips on polished spears. Nobles whispered to one another in voices so quiet they were almost lost beneath the sound of the storm. Something was wrong. Very wrong. At the heart of the palace, behind heavy silver doors engraved with the crest of the Rain House, healers moved quickly around a grand bed draped in blue silk. Queen Seraphine lay exhausted among soft pillows, her silver hair damp with sweat, her breathing slow but steady. Beside her stood King Aeron. His ceremonial robes had long been abandoned for a simple dark tunic, and the golden crown of the Rain House rested forgotten on a nearby table. At this moment, he was not thinking as a king. He was simply a husband. And a father. A baby's cry broke through the room. Then another. The chief healer smiled through tired eyes. "Your Majesty..." She carefully lifted the first infant, wrapping her in a blanket embroidered with tiny silver raindrops. "A healthy daughter." Another healer placed the second baby beside her sister. "And another." For a heartbeat, silence filled the chamber. King Aeron stepped closer. His hands trembled as he looked upon his children for the first time. The first baby slept peacefully, one tiny hand curled around the edge of her blanket. The second opened bright blue eyes and reached toward him with impossibly small fingers. Aeron laughed-a sound so full of joy that every servant in the room smiled. "They're beautiful." Queen Seraphine smiled weakly. "They have your eyes." He carefully lifted the older twin into his arms. "So small..." "So perfect." The queen watched her husband with tears shining in her eyes. "What shall we call them?" Aeron looked down at the child sleeping against his chest. "Liora." He kissed her forehead before placing her gently beside her sister. "And this little one..." The younger baby yawned. "...Anna." The names seemed to settle over the room like a blessing. Outside, thunder rolled across the sea. For a little while, the storm no longer mattered. The kingdom had its princesses. An hour later, the celebration had begun. Throughout the palace, bells rang to announce the birth of the heirs to the Rain House. Musicians filled the grand halls with joyful melodies, while servants lit hundreds of crystal lanterns that reflected in the flowing water beneath the palace floors. Word spread quickly across the Fae Realm. The Rain House had heirs once more. Messengers rode through enchanted forests and over snow-covered mountain passes to deliver invitations to the rulers of the other Great Houses. The Winter House. The Spring House. The Autumn House. Tradition demanded that every ruling family witness the blessing of newborn heirs. It was a ceremony older than memory itself. King Aeron stood upon the balcony overlooking the sea. The rain had softened now, falling gently around him. For the first time in years, hope filled his heart. Behind him, the nursery doors opened. Queen Seraphine stepped onto the balcony carrying Anna while Liora slept peacefully in a cradle inside. She leaned against him. "They're finally here." Aeron smiled. "They'll grow up without fear." "They'll know peace." The queen looked toward the distant horizon. "I pray you're right." A cold wind swept across the balcony. The palace bells stopped ringing. One. By one. Silence spread across the palace. Aeron frowned. "Why have the bells stopped?" Before anyone could answer- A horn echoed through the night. Not the sound of celebration. A warning. A palace guard burst through the doors, soaked by rain. His face had gone pale. "Your Majesty!" Aeron turned sharply. "What is it?" The guard struggled to catch his breath. "The outer gate..." "It has fallen." The king's expression hardened. "What?" "We're under attack." The words seemed to freeze the world. Another horn sounded. Then another. Far below, steel clashed against steel. Cries echoed through the palace grounds. The celebration had become a battlefield. Aeron reached for the sword hanging beside the balcony doors. His joyful expression vanished. In its place stood a king prepared for war. "Seal the nursery," he ordered. "No one enters except the Queen's Guard." The guard bowed immediately. "Yes, Your Majesty." Aeron turned to Seraphine. "Stay with our daughters." "What about you?" He rested a hand against her cheek. "I'll end this before dawn." As he hurried toward the doors, another bolt of lightning illuminated the palace. For the briefest moment, a dark figure stood on a distant rooftop, watching the royal family. Watching the newborn princesses. Then the figure disappeared into the storm. The night had only just begun.
