CHAPTER 1
The rain hit the dark tinted windows of the black sedan like a barrage of tiny bullets. Inside, the silence was suffocating, broken only by the steady, erratic breathing of the woman who had brought me into this world—and was now driving me straight into its hell. "Keep your mouth shut when we get inside," my mother hissed, her knuckles white on the steering wheel. Her voice trembled, soaked in alcohol and desperate fear. "You owe me this, Elena. I fed you for twenty one years. The least you can do is fix the mess you caused just by existing." I didn't answer. I kept my gaze fixed on the passing blur of city lights, my hands folded tightly in my lap. I had stopped begging three miles ago. Begging had never saved me from her fists or her cold, bitter words, and it certainly wasn't going to save me from the men waiting at the end of this road. The car banked hard left, pulling up to a towering iron gate that opened like the jaws of a leviathan. Beyond it stood the Vance estate—an imposing, modern fortress of dark stone and bulletproof glass perched high above the city skyline. When the car stopped, two men in tailored suits opened our doors. They didn't speak. They didn't need to. They escorted us through massive iron-reinforced doors, down marble hallways lit by dim, recessed lights, and into a vast private study lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Behind a massive dark walnut desk sat Killian Vance. He didn't look like a mobster from a cheap movie. He was wrapped in a bespoke black suit, broad-shouldered and dangerously calm. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his sharp, angular jaw bore the shadow of a dark stubble. But it was his eyes—cold, obsidian, and utterly unreadable—that stripped the air right out of my lungs. "Mr. Vance," my mother whimpered, dropping to her knees on the Persian rug without an ounce of dignity left. "I brought her. Like we agreed. The debt... the debt is clear now, right?" Killian didn't even look at her. He poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a heavy crystal glass, taking a slow, deliberate sip. His focus was entirely on me. "Leave," Killian said. His voice was a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated right through the hardwood floor, thick with quiet command. "What about my debt—" "I said leave," Killian repeated, not raising his voice, yet the air in the room instantly dropped ten degrees. My mother scrambled to her feet, not offering me a single backward glance, and bolted out the heavy oak doors. The sharp click of the latch locking behind her echoed like a gunshot. Silence stretched between us. I stood frozen in the center of the room, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird, but I kept my chin locked high. I refused to let him see me break. Killian stood up slowly, towering over the room. He circled the heavy desk, his slow, measured steps closing the distance between us until he stopped barely an inch away. The heat radiating off him was overwhelming, carrying the rich scent of cedar, expensive tobacco, and pure, unfiltered danger. He reached out. His long, calloused fingers caught my chin, tilting my head back so I had no choice but to look into his dark eyes. His thumb brushed over my bottom lip, pressing with just enough force to demand complete submission. "You aren't trembling," Killian noted, his gaze tracking every micro-expression on my face. "Most people in your position are begging within five minutes." "I spent twenty one years begging," I managed to say, my voice raspy but steady. "It never changed the outcome." A slow, lethal smile curved the corner of his lips. His hand slid from my chin down to the back of my neck, his fingers tangling into my hair and tugging gently, pulling my body flush against his hard chest. "Your mother thought she was discarding a mistake," he whispered against my ear, his breath hot and sending a sudden, electric shiver down my spine. "She had no idea what she was handing over. In my world, what belongs to me is protected with blood. And you, Elena... are entirely mine now."
