Burn It Down

MANHATTAN SECRETS Episode 3: "Burn It Down" Fashion Week. 7 days to go. The city was holding its breath. _Lyra Blake_ sat alone in her studio at 5AM. In her palm: a small black USB. Inside it? Everything. Damian Voss’s grey-area contracts. Offshore accounts. Tax loopholes. Backdoor deals. Enough to crash Voss Empire by morning. Enough to make _Blake Atelier_ the biggest name in New York overnight. She plugged it in. Files opened. Page after page. Damian’s signature. Damian’s initials. Headlines flashed in her head: _BILLIONAIRE FRAUD. VOSS EMPIRE IMPLODES. NEW QUEEN RISES._ Her phone buzzed on the table. *Damian*: _Fitting. 9AM. Don’t be late._ Lyra stared at the USB. Then at the message. She ejected it. Slid it into the drawer. Locked it. Took the tiny key and threaded it onto the chain around her neck. If she was going to burn the world down, she’d do it wearing her own designs. --- Voss Tower. 9AM. Fitting room. Chaos. Steamers. Racks of silk. Assistants running. And in the center of it all: the _Midnight in SoHo_ collection. The same collection that was leaked 3 weeks ago. But Lyra hadn’t cried. She’d rebuilt it. In 48 hours. New cuts. Sharper lines. Deeper blacks. More dangerous. If the leak was a copy, this was the original with teeth. The door opened. *Damian Voss.* He looked wrecked. White shirt. Sleeves rolled. Dark circles under those grey eyes. Three days. No sleep. “Board wants to cancel the show,” he said. No hello. Lyra kept pinning a hem. “And?” “And I told them no.” He walked to her. Pulled a folder from under his arm. Slapped it on the table. Inside: a wire transfer. $5,000,000. From _D. Voss Personal Account_ to _Blake Atelier - Fashion Week Fund._ “This is my vote,” he said. “In you.” Lyra’s throat tightened. “You’re not going to ask about the USB?” Damian leaned against the table. Close. Too close. “You have it. If you wanted to destroy me, you would’ve done it by now.” His voice dropped. “I’m waiting to see who you choose to be, Blake.” For the first time, the billionaire who owned half of Manhattan sounded… unsure. Lyra looked up at him. “I choose to win. With you. Or against you.” Damian smirked. The old Damian. “Good. Because I hate losing.” --- They didn’t talk about Vegas on the car ride to Lincoln Center. But it was there. In the silence. The blackout. The storm. His confession: _“My dad’s company crashed when I was 16.”_ His other confession: _“Eleanor was a business deal.”_ And the last one, before he walked out: _“Because you weren’t built to lose.”_ Lyra touched the key around her neck. The USB felt like it was burning her skin. Her phone buzzed. *Unknown*: _Send it to the board. Now. This is your shot. -J_ Her ex-intern. Another buzz. *Damian*: _Backstage. 10 minutes. Need to talk._ She closed her eyes. Two choices. Queen of ashes. Or partner in an empire. -- Lincoln Center. Red carpet. Flashes. Screaming. “VOSS X BLAKE” was on every banner. Every step-and-repeat. Backstage was worse. Models. Makeup. Music thumping. 10 minutes to showtime. Lyra was in the wings when Damian grabbed her arm. Pulled her behind a curtain. He looked different. Tired. But calm. In his hand: a resignation letter. Already signed. “If you give them the USB,” he said quietly. “I’ll make it easy. I’ll resign tonight. You take my seat. _Blake Atelier_ absorbs Voss Empire. You win everything.” He held out a pen. “Take it.” The lights dimmed. The opening music started. A low bass that vibrated through the floor. Lyra stared at the pen. Then at him. Her hand went to her neck. Pulled out the key. Opened the locket. The USB. For 3 seconds, she didn’t move. Then she placed it in Damian’s palm. Closed his fingers over it. “I don’t break empires,” she said. “I build them. And I build them with people I trust.” Damian looked down at the USB. Then at her. Something cracked in his expression. Shock. Relief. Something else. “You’re insane, Blake.” “Working with you? Yeah. I am.” _“30 seconds!”_ the stage manager yelled. Damian pocketed the USB. “We’ll talk after.” --- Lights up. The first model stepped out. Black. Silk. Danger. _Midnight in SoHo 2.0_ The crowd gasped. Then stood. Phones up. Clapping. One look and everyone knew: this wasn’t a comeback. This was a coronation. 15 minutes later, it was over. Standing ovation. In the front row: Vogue. Harper’s. Anna Wintour. By the time Lyra got backstage, her phone had 200 notifications. *VOGUE*: _BLAKE ATELIER SAVES FASHION WEEK. THE NEW QUEEN OF NY_ *WWD*: _DAMIAN VOSS BETS $5M ON LYRA BLAKE. IT PAID OFF._ *TMZ*: _WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON BETWEEN VOSS AND BLAKE??_ Damian found her by the racks. He didn’t say anything. Just handed her a glass of champagne. “You did it.” “We did it.” Before she could answer, PR rushed in. “Mr. Voss, press is waiting.” He nodded. Walked to the center of the room. Raised a hand. Silence. “I have a statement.” Cameras up. “Three days ago, someone gave me this.” He held up the USB. The same one. Gasps. “This contains alleged evidence of illegal activity within Voss Empire. I’m turning it over to the FBI tonight. Because Voss Empire doesn’t hide. We fix. And anyone involved will answer for it.” More flashes. Then he turned. Looked straight at Lyra. “And the future of this company? Of this industry? It’s in the hands of Ms. Lyra Blake. Partner. Creative Director. And the reason we’re all still standing.” He walked off. Left her in a room full of screaming reporters. -- 2AM. Voss Tower Rooftop. The city below. A million lights. Cold wind. Lyra in a silk robe over her gown. Damian in just his shirt. Neither spoke for a while. “You could’ve ended me,” he finally said. “So could you,” Lyra replied. “Clause 8. Vegas. The board.” Damian laughed. Low. “Fair.” He turned to her. “Why didn’t you?” “Because you didn’t end me when you had the chance.” Silence again. But not heavy. Not anymore. Damian held out his hand. Not for a handshake. Lyra took it. His fingers were warm. “Deal’s still on?” he asked. Lyra squeezed his hand. “What deal? This isn’t a deal anymore, Mr. Voss.” “What is it?” “Partnership.” He smiled. The real one. The one he only gave her. “Partnership,” he agreed. They stood there. Looking over the city they just conquered. The war was over. The empire had a new queen. And for the first time, she wasn’t alone on the throne. To be continued...
