Caged

MANHATTAN SECRETS* Episode 5: "Caged" The city felt far away. 36 hours since Tokyo, and the world still hadn’t stopped whispering her name. _Lyra Blake_. On every billboard. On every cover. But inside Voss Tower, the air tasted like storm clouds. *6:12 AM. The 40th Floor.* Three contracts lay on her desk. Milan. Dubai. Sydney. And on each one, in his sharp, impatient handwriting: `Sign. Don’t ask. - D` The door opened without a knock. _Damian Voss._ Black suit. Sleeves rolled. Eyes like he hadn’t slept in days. Like he’d been fighting the world and losing. “Jet’s at 7. We’re leaving.” “Where?” Lyra didn’t look up. “Hamptons. My house.” “I’m not going.” “Yes, you are, Blake.” He leaned over her desk. Close enough that she could smell cedar and coffee and exhaustion. “The board wants to name you CEO. But first, one clause. Five years. Exclusive. Only Voss Empire.” “What does that mean?” “It means no one else touches your designs. No one else touches you. Only me.” Lyra finally met his eyes. “That sounds like a cage.” “It sounds like protection.” “What’s the difference?” Damian straightened. His jaw ticked. “Car’s downstairs at 7. If you’re not in it, I’m coming up to carry you.” He walked out. And the room felt colder. --- *7:04 AM. Teterboro Airport.* The jet was all white. _VOSS I_ written across the side like a promise. Inside, silence. Lyra by the window, watching the clouds. Damian across from her, laptop glowing against his face. After 40 minutes, he broke it. “Are you mad at me?” “Not mad. Tired.” “Of what?” “Of you deciding what’s best for me.” He closed the laptop. “When I was 16, my father lost everything. Overnight. He told me: ‘If you want to keep something, you lock it away. Or the world will take it.’” “So you’re locking me away?” “I’m trying to keep you.” The jet dipped. Hamptons below. Endless ocean. Endless sky. --- *9:20 AM. The Voss Farmhouse. Hamptons.* White wood. Glass walls. The sea crashing just beyond. No signal. No press. No board. Just waves and wind. Damian dropped his coat. “No one can find us here.” “It feels like a prison.” “It’s meant to feel safe.” He set a folder on the table. Thick. Heavy. “Last contract. Sign it. And we’re free.” Lyra flipped to Clause 9. _Lyra Blake may not enter any business, creative, or personal partnership without the written approval of D. Voss for five years._ Her hands shook. “Personal? You want to approve my friends? My life?” “Yes.” “Why?” “Because the last time I didn’t, they stole your soul and put it on the internet.” She walked to the window. “Do you think I’m weak?” “I think you’re made of light. And light breaks too easily.” Footsteps behind her. His breath on her neck. “Sign it, Blake. And I swear to you… in five years, you’ll own the world. With me.” Lyra turned. “Or in five years I’ll hate you.” “Maybe.” Outside, the sky turned gray. The first drop of rain hit the glass. --- *11:40 PM. The Storm.* Power out. Only the generator humming. The whole house bathed in amber. Lyra in the kitchen, making coffee with trembling hands. “Can’t sleep?” Damian. Bare feet. White shirt. Wet hair. “Not when there’s a contract with my name on it.” “Then sign it.” She spun. “You’re trying to force me.” “I’m giving you two bad choices and hoping you pick me.” He stepped closer. “Two months ago you had $400 and a dream. Now you have millions and an empire. That was me.” “And now you want my freedom in return.” “I want to keep you safe.” The rain got louder. Damian reached out. Took her hand. Not rough. Just steady. “Come upstairs. Let’s talk. Without yelling.” --- *Upstairs. The Study.* One desk. One pen. One contract. The ocean roaring outside. Damian closed the door. Leaning against it. “I’m not going to force you, Blake. But I’m not letting you leave until you choose.” Lyra laughed, tired. “You think I’m scared?” “No. That’s what terrifies me.” He moved to her. Slow. “When everything fell apart for me at 16, I promised I’d never need anyone again. Then you walked in. And suddenly I needed you more than air.” He brushed a strand of hair from her face. His fingers lingered. “And that scares me more than anything.” Lyra’s breath caught. “Don’t.” “Why? Because it’s true?” “Because it hurts.” Damian dropped his hand. Stepped back. “Sit.” They sat on the floor. The contract between them. Rain on the roof. Heartbeats in the quiet. “If I sign,” she whispered, “what happens?” “You become my equal. 50-50. Co-owner.” “And if I don’t?” “I let you go. And I never look for you again.” A lie. They both knew. Lyra set the pen down. “I need the night to think.” Damian stood. “Jet leaves at 6 AM. Decide before then.” The door clicked shut. --- *5:30 AM.* Red ink. All over the contract. Clause 9 crossed out. `Negotiable.` written in the margin. She walked downstairs. Damian was already there. Coffee in hand. Dark circles. She slid the contract across the table. “I’m not signing it like this. But I’ll sign it on my terms.” Silence. Then Damian picked up a pen. Under Clause 9, he wrote: `Approved with amendments. - D. Voss` He held the pen out to her. “You win.” Lyra signed. The moment the ink dried, the rain stopped. Sunlight spilled through the windows. Damian stood. Came to her. “You’re the most stubborn person I’ve ever met.” “And you’re the most impossible.” His hand lifted. Brushed her cheek. Thumb ghosted over her lips. “The cage is open,” he murmured. “Now comes the partnership.” Lyra caught his wrist. Didn’t push it away. “When’s the jet?” “Whenever you’re ready.” --- *10:00 AM. Back in the Air.* Quiet again. But different now. Softer. Damian opened his laptop. “Board meeting at 3. They’re announcing you.” “I’m ready.” He slid another paper to her. `VOSS x BLAKE - LIFETIME PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT` Lyra smiled. “Lifetime? Ambitious.” “You taught me to be.” The jet climbed. Hamptons shrinking below. Lyra looked out the window and whispered: “Was that freedom… or a different kind of cage?” Damian heard her. He smiled, slow and real. “Both.” _To be continued…_
