Yelling in pain, her cries became unrecognizably human – with large canine teeth pushing painfully through the roof of her jaw, loud screams became even louder howls. And in what seemed to have taken an eternity, there stood a once tenderly looking Sarah with soft blonde hair and eyes the color of the morning sun – now a four footed beast with blonde colored fur and yellow glowing eyes growling at the group that stood round her before dropping limp and losing consciousness. Shape-shifting still wasn’t an experience any werewolf got used to, most especially Derek. Although he had being able to shape shift longer than Sarah – he still had trouble comprehending his form as a fierce looking beast rather than a simple looking young man who worked with the local construction company. “At least let’s be sure he’s alright” I said . I wasn’t a werewolf of course, but I had found Derek during his third episode a couple of weeks ago when I walked through the woods alone. An eventful evening after my shift from the animal centre, my car had broken down along the main road but instead of flagging down a motorist, I decided to take through the woods. I had hiked these woods many times already with my friend Mia, so a short hike home wouldn’t be an awfully terrible idea I believed. Walking mindlessly through the trees, l had heard a human cry and had cautiously walked towards the sound to find out what was happening. To my fright and surprising delight I had seen what only had been described in folklore and movies – a person transforming into a beast, a werewolf. There in front of her eyes, a skinny looking man in the local construction uniform was yelling as he beat into a tree with his bare fists but he wasn’t beating at the tree, he was tearing at it. Peeling off the bark with his bare fingers. Uncertain of this unusual sight, with a construction worker out in the woods scrapping off tree barks. I tried to get a little closer but steps on a twig that snaps into the silence. In a swift attempt to hide my presence I leans quickly into the closest tree and shuts my eyes in the same instance. And when nothing seemed to have occurred – thank goodness he didn’t notice me. I open my eyes to the sight of a large fur covered beast with its growl rumbling many inches above my head. Frozen with fear, I manages to shift my gaze upwards trying not to suddenly move my head until I lock my eyes with this black beast staring down at me with sharp yellow eyes that glowed. It was growling still but its teeth remained hidden between its jaws. And with what I considered a miracle; this large beast turns its attention away from me and takes off with silent speed into the woods. Still frozen in the moment, I try to feel my breath. Unsure if what I had just witnessed was in truth a real occurrence. I take a weak step away from the tree and turns around to find pieces of the construction worker’s clothes. Ripped apart during the transformation I had partly witnessed. However, one bit seemed to remain a name tag. “Derek Brunson” it read. A week later, I walk to the construction workers outpost as there was some renovation work going on the town hall complex and would ask of the same name I had found in the woods a week ago. “Excuse me please” I said to a group of the construction workers who were taking a smoke break just outside the building complex. “Do you please know anyone with the name Derek Brunson?” “The weird looking guy?” another replied instantly and the whole group burst into hysteric laughter to seem like they had an inside joke I had no clue about. “Where can I find him?” my thin voice asked, this time turning her my to the man who had just responded to my first question. “He’s probably at the head office, getting on with some strange thing only weirdoes get on with”. “And what would a young fine lady want with that frightened face Derek anyways?” asked a third man from the group. “Oh, it’s just work business from the animal centre” as I begin to walk back in the direction I had approached the group. They all burst out again in laughter, this time – it was harder than the first. I wondered what I said wrong but didn’t hang on to the thought as she crossed over the empty road where she had parked her wagon car. I gets into my car, instantly wrapping the seat belt across my body – igniting the car’s engine in almost the same motion before taking a final peek at the men who seemed to still be caught in their hysterical rounds of laughter. Arriving at the head office, things didn’t seem as busy as I’d imagine. Only a few bodies walking through the open-air building, not caring the slightest that a short red head had just wandered clueless into their building. I waves at the first worker I catches eye contact with and hurriedly paces towards him with short but quick strides. “I am looking for a friend, Derek Brunson; they said he’d be here. Can you point me to his station?” I asks. Without voicing a single word, the man points me in the direction of a lean looking man. Same stature as the one I saw about a week ago. He was carrying a number of bricks that seemed to weigh many times his actual weight. “Thank you” I say mindlessly as I walks towards Derek but stops instantly in my step as he catches the sight of the redhead woman who was now walking towards him. He snatches his gaze away from her and walks off with the bricks on his shoulders into another compartment in the building. Two full hours roll round the clock and Derek doesn’t step out through the door he entered through. Flustered and frustrated, I decides to go sit back in a car which I parked a few blocks away. By the swing of the evening, after it seemed nothing breathing stood inside the construction building. Then walks out Derek who looks around before hurriedly pacing to his own truck, right across the building. I turns on the engine and decides to tail him. Where ever this man lived, whoever he was – I was going to find out tonight!
