A month had gone by since her birthday, and the Alpha’s son had come every day. He didn’t seem to care that her wolf slept, he wanted to be near her always. The mate bond was like that. She wished she could feel it.
“Don’t worry Stel, dad told me that sometimes the really strong wolves need more time to rest before waking.” Cade said reassuringly.
“Something just feels off. I can’t feel her there, but it’s like she’s in a coma, I can’t reach her.”
“We’ll figure it out, the pack is excited to meet your wolf. And once she wakes up we will take over the pack and raise them higher than we ever imagined.”
“Cade, does your dad have any idea how to wake her up?”
“Every time I ask him he just tells me not to worry about it.”
“Can we research it? I can’t be the only one this has happened to. What if I have some rare wolf disease or something?”
“Sure! We can read in the family library.”
“Not yet little one,”. Grandpa said coming into the room, “you need to start Alpha training if you’re going to be the Luna.”
“When will that start?” I asked slightly worried.
“The Alpha has called you to the pack house to begin now. Hurry up, the Luna is waiting for you “
Cade walked me to the pack house to where his mother was waiting, then kissed my hand and said he wouldn’t be far if I needed him.
“Hello Luna Tilly, my Grandpa said you wanted to see me?”
She eyed me, “That’s right. You might not have awaken yet but you need to be capable of defending the pack. So today we will begin hand to hand combat. Prepare yourself.”
“What?” The punch came faster than I could think. The Luna was completely thrashing me, grabbing my hair and slamming my face down into the gravel. I tried to roll away, only to be grabbed by the legs and hauled back.
“Reach for your wolf! That’s where your strength is!”
I shook reaching into myself, but the wolf still slept, hadn’t even moved.
Luna Tilly kicked my stomach knocking me back down “pathetic”
The ‘training’ went on like that for some time. I begged for her to stop but she wouldn’t. She was ruthless. Finally she stopped and helped me to my feet, she put my arm up on her shoulder and wrapped hers around my back.
“I had hoped that if I went at you hard enough your wolf would wake up.” She helped me sit at the pack table and grabbed some ice for my bruises. “Your wolf must be very stubborn.”
A whimper escaped my lips when I tried to speak.
The Luna looked at me dejectedly, “Well maybe your wolf will wake to heal you faster. We will actually train tomorrow, for now here’s some books to read on how to be a Luna. I’ll be quizzing you on all of them tomorrow and for any answer you get wrong I will add one more bruise to you.”
I gaped at her and she laughed. “I’m kidding Stella! But do read them, they are quite informative.” She smiled, but something about the smile felt off. Again I reached within for my wolf, but there was no response again.
“Luna Tilly, have you ever heard of a wolf being in a coma?”
Her expression became unreadable, “Once. There’s an old fairytale about the unconscious wolf, you don’t want to hear the story though. It ends poorly and is most likely fiction”.
“Can I read it anyways?”
“No, it was never written down and I will not tell you. It isn’t well known either.”
“Did the wolf in the story ever wake?”
“Yes. At the end of its life.”
