Blurb

A ruthless Alpha finds his fated mate in a homeless, wolfless woman behind his pack's brothel and does the one thing a mate bond never forgives: he chains her in the dark and pretends she does not exist. What follows is not a love story. It is a war between a man who built himself on the ruins of his trauma and a woman who survived everything the world threw at her with nothing but silence and stubbornness. And when her wolf finally tears through the walls of his mansion three months later, it is bigger than anyone in that pack has ever seen. Including him.

Chapter 1: The Alley
The brothel smelled the way it always did. Perfume over sweat, candlelight over rot. This is the kind of place that made you feel clean by comparison if you were the sort of man who needed that. Lucia was not that sort of man. He came here because it was simple. Women who wanted nothing from him except what he paid for. No bonds. No expectations. No one was trying to crawl into the spaces he kept sealed. He came here, he left, and the world continued in the order he had arranged it. Tonight, the order failed him. He had been inside for twenty minutes before he gave up. Something was wrong with the air. Something sharp underneath the perfume, underneath the noise of the other men and the low music and the breathing. Something that did not belong here and that his wolf kept turning toward like a compass finding north. He pulled on his shirt and walked out. The alley behind the brothel was where the night deposited things it had no use for. Broken bottles, torn cloth, and the sound of something small trying not to be heard littered everywhere. Lucia stopped. His wolf went very still inside him. Then, he saw in a corner where the wall met the ground, where the shadow was deepest. A woman folded against the brick like she was trying to become part of it. Dark hair matted across her face. A dress that was barely a dress anymore, fabric torn from the shoulder down, hanging. Her arms wrapped around herself. Shaking. Three men stood in a loose half-circle around her. Not standing the way men stand when they are deciding something. Standing the way men stand when they have already decided. Lucia's eyes moved from the woman to the men. One of them noticed him and straightened. "Alpha." The word came out wrong. Too casual. A man trying to sound like he belonged in the same sentence as that title. "Leave," Lucia said. Not loudly. He never needed to be loud. The men left. Quickly and without dignity. He did not watch them go. He looked at the woman. She had not moved. She was still pressed against the wall, still shaking, her face turned away. She had not looked up when he spoke. She did not seem to know that the threat had changed. Or perhaps she knew and had stopped believing in the difference between one threat and another. And then it hit him. It was not a smell exactly. It was more fundamental than that. It went past his nose and into something older, something that lived in the base of his spine and behind his sternum. His wolf lurched forward so suddenly that Lucia nearly stepped back. The feeling was enormous and ridiculous and absolutely, categorically unacceptable. The mate bond. He stood in the alley behind a brothel and felt the mate bond pulling toward a homeless woman bleeding at the knees on a dirty ground. For a long moment he did not move. He was aware of his own breathing. Aware of the cold. Aware of the way his wolf was straining against him like something on a leash that had decided the leash was no longer relevant. He looked at her. She was small. Too thin. Her hands were shaking and her knuckles were scraped raw and her feet were bare on the stone. She was twenty years old at most. She looked like someone who had been trying to survive for a very long time and was running out of capacity to keep doing it. His wolf roared: yours. “No.” Lucia said, to his wolf and to himself and to the bond and to everything currently trying to rearrange the order he had spent twenty-nine years constructing. He turned to the two guards who had followed him out. "Take her to the mansion," he said. "Dark room. Chain her at the wrist. Long enough to reach the mat and the bucket. Nothing more." One of his guards looked at the woman, then at him. Lucia met the look. His guard looked away. "Clean her up first," Lucia said, because the order required it. "Feed her. Then the chain." "Yes, Alpha." He turned to go. He had taken three steps when she made a sound. Not a word. Not even a real sound. Just a small, involuntary catch of breath, the sound a person makes when they realize they are being moved from one kind of dark into another and they do not have the strength left to fight it. Lucia's feet stopped. His wolf screamed. He stood there for two full seconds, his back to her, every part of him that was an animal pulling toward her and every part of him that was still the boy who had learned what wanting something cost you holding the line. He walked to his car. He did not look back. In the backseat, the leather cool through his shirt, the city lights passing over the window in slow amber stripes, he sat with his hands flat on his thighs and felt the mate bond pulling steadily behind him like a hook in his chest attached to a line that ran all the way back to an alley and a woman on a dirty floor. He thought about his father's face. The Valdek name. The order of things. He thought about Shaun. He poured himself nothing. He allowed himself nothing. The mansion appeared ahead, lit and large and exactly as he had arranged it. Lucia straightened his jacket and went inside.
