chapter 1: first clue
The news spread across Blackridge City before sunrise.
ANOTHER BODY FOUND. HEART MISSING.
Television stations interrupted their morning programs. Social media exploded with theories. Reporters crowded outside police headquarters, desperate for answers. Some believed it was the work of a cult. Others claimed a serial killer had finally arrived in the city.
Detective Elena Marlowe ignored every camera pointed at her.
She walked through the front doors of the Major Crimes Division with a cup of black coffee in one hand and the victim's file in the other. The building buzzed with tension. Officers whispered in small groups. Phones rang without stopping.
Captain Marcus Holloway stood in the conference room waiting for her.
"The mayor wants answers," he said. "The media wants answers. Unfortunately, I don't have any."
Elena placed the file on the table.
"Neither do I."
"You've read the report?"
She nodded.
"No fingerprints. No forced entry. Security cameras went black for exactly nine minutes. The victim's neighbors heard nothing."
Marcus sighed.
"Exactly."
The room fell silent.
A knock interrupted them.
"Come in," Marcus called.
The door opened.
A tall man stepped inside wearing a charcoal suit, carrying a laptop beneath one arm. His dark hair was slightly untidy, and his calm gray eyes scanned the room before settling on Elena.
"Detective Elena Marlowe," Marcus said. "Meet Adrien Vale."
Adrien extended his hand.
"I've heard a lot about you."
Elena shook it briefly.
"I wish I could say the same."
A faint smile crossed his face.
"I usually stay behind the scenes."
Marcus cleared his throat.
"Adrien is one of the best investigative analysts I've ever worked with. He notices details everyone else misses. From today onward, he's your partner."
Elena frowned.
"I work alone."
"You don't anymore."
She wanted to argue, but Marcus had already left the room.
Adrien quietly placed several photographs on the table.
"The killer wanted us to find something."
"We already found the missing heart."
"I'm not talking about that."
He slid one picture toward her.
"The rose."
Elena looked at it.
"So?"
"It isn't ordinary."
She raised an eyebrow.
"It's a rare variety that isn't sold anywhere in Blackridge."
"You checked?"
"I checked every florist in the city before coming here."
Elena stared at him.
"You did all that before nine in the morning?"
"I couldn't sleep."
For the first time, she looked at him with genuine curiosity.
Maybe Captain Holloway hadn't exaggerated.
"There's something else," Adrien continued.
"The victim's fingernails."
"What about them?"
"They're clean."
"And?"
"A woman preparing for a formal dinner doesn't scrub beneath her fingernails minutes before dying."
Elena looked closer at the photographs.
He was right.
"The killer cleaned them," she whispered.
"Exactly."
"But why?"
Adrien met her eyes.
"To remove evidence... or because he wanted her to look perfect."
A chill ran down Elena's spine.
This wasn't just murder.
It was ritual.
---
An hour later they arrived at the city morgue.
Dr. Naomi Carter greeted them with tired eyes.
"I've never seen anything like this."
She pulled back the white sheet covering the victim.
"The heart was removed with surgical precision."
"A surgeon?" Elena asked.
"Possibly."
Naomi pointed toward a thin cut running across the chest.
"The incision is almost flawless."
Adrien studied it carefully.
"No hesitation marks."
Naomi nodded.
"The killer knew exactly where to cut."
Elena looked at the victim's peaceful expression.
"It almost looks like she's sleeping."
Naomi hesitated.
"There's something stranger."
She handed Elena a small evidence bag.
Inside lay a silver necklace.
A tiny heart-shaped pendant hung from it.
"It wasn't around her neck," Naomi explained.
"It was inside her hand."
Elena frowned.
"She was holding it?"
"No."
Naomi's voice became quieter.
"It had been placed inside her closed fist after she died."
Adrien turned the pendant over.
Tiny letters were engraved on the back.
Forever Yours.
He looked up.
"This wasn't random."
Elena nodded slowly.
"The victim knew her killer."
Before anyone could speak again, a young officer burst into the room.
"Detective!"
Elena turned.
"What is it?"
"We've got another body."
Silence.
The officer swallowed hard.
"This one was found less than fifteen minutes ago."
"Location?"
"Riverside Park."
"The same signature?"
The officer's face turned pale.
"Yes."
"And..."
He struggled to finish.
"This victim still has his heart."
Elena and Adrien exchanged a confused glance.
"Then what's missing?" Elena asked.
The officer took a shaky breath.
"His wife's."
Without another word, Elena grabbed her coat and rushed out of the morgue, Adrien close behind.
Neither of them noticed the man standing across the street.
Hidden beneath a black umbrella.
Watching.
Waiting.
As their car disappeared into traffic, he smiled to himself.
"The game has finally begun."
