Chapter 7: Echoes Beneath The Rain

634 Words
Rain fell over Blackridge like ash. From the twenty-third floor of the Major Crimes Division, the city looked beautiful. From the inside... It looked like it was dying. Detective Elena Marlowe hadn't slept in thirty-six hours. Photographs covered the investigation board. Victims. Families. Financial records. Newspaper clippings dating back fifteen years. Every red string led to the same place. Aurora Circle. She rubbed her tired eyes. "I've missed something." Across the room, Adrien Vale quietly placed a mug of coffee beside her. "You've been saying that for six hours." "Because it's true." "You've solved impossible cases before." She looked at him. "This one feels different." "It is." He unfolded a faded map of Blackridge. "This city wasn't built once." Elena frowned. "What do you mean?" "It was rebuilt after a flood nearly forty years ago." He pointed to the map. "Everything beneath these streets still exists." Old hospitals. Forgotten railway tunnels. Underground archives. Buildings erased from public records. Elena's eyes widened. "Someone could move through the city without ever being seen." Adrien nodded. "And that's exactly what our killer has been doing." --- Three hours later... A maintenance elevator carried them beneath Blackridge City. The deeper they descended, the colder the air became. When the doors opened, dust drifted through the beams of their flashlights. Rows of abandoned filing cabinets stretched into darkness. "This was the city's original records office," Adrien whispered. "It should have been demolished." "It wasn't." Someone had sealed it and erased it from every official map. Elena opened the nearest cabinet. Birth certificates. Medical files. School records. All perfectly preserved. Then she noticed something strange. One drawer had no label. It was locked. Adrien examined the lock. "No keyhole." "What opens it?" He brushed away decades of dust. A fingerprint scanner. "Forty-year-old technology doesn't look like this," Elena said. "It isn't forty years old." Someone had returned. Recently. Adrien pressed his thumb against the scanner. Nothing happened. Elena tried hers. A sharp green light flashed. ACCESS GRANTED. The drawer slowly slid open. Inside rested only one file. On the cover, in neat black letters, were the words: ELENA MARLOWE Her hands trembled. "I've never been here." Adrien carefully opened the file. The first page wasn't a birth certificate. It was an observation report. «Subject demonstrates exceptional pattern recognition. Continue monitoring.» The date... ...was twenty-three years ago. Elena's voice became unsteady. "I was five." The second page contained photographs. Not of crime scenes. Of Elena. Playing in a school playground. Reading in a library. Walking home with her mother. Someone had documented parts of her childhood. Without her knowledge. Adrien quietly closed the file. "This investigation..." He struggled to finish the sentence. "...didn't begin with the first murder." Before Elena could respond, the old building suddenly lost power. Darkness swallowed the archive. Then— A projector hummed to life at the far end of the room. A grainy film flickered onto a cracked concrete wall. A little girl appeared on the screen. She was laughing as she chased paper boats through the rain. Elena stopped breathing. It was her. Then another child ran into the frame. A boy. His face was blurred. The film ended with a single handwritten sentence. One of them remembered. Silence filled the underground archive. Adrien looked at Elena. "What aren't you remembering?" She stared at the blank wall. A sharp pain shot through her head. A memory... Not complete. Just fragments. Rain. A woman's scream. A crimson rose floating in a puddle. And a voice whispering gently into the darkness— "When the last heart remembers... Blackridge will tell the truth." The lights flickered back on. The projector had vanished. So had the file. Someone had been inside the archive with them all along. And whoever it was... ...had wanted Elena to remember. But not everything.
