Chapter 6:The Cost Of Truth

672 Words
The watch ticked. Four minutes... fifty-nine seconds. Its metallic clicks echoed through the grand hall of the Vale Estate. Elena's pulse matched every second. "Lily!" she shouted. "Can you hear me?" The woman tied to the chair slowly lifted her head. It wasn't Lily. It was another young woman with frightened brown eyes and bruises around her wrists. "Please..." she whispered. "Help me..." Elena's stomach dropped. "It's not my sister." Adrien's gaze swept across the room. "No." He crouched near the silver wires without touching them. "This was never about the woman." He looked toward the masked figure standing on the balcony. "It was about distracting us." The masked man gave a slow, mocking bow before disappearing into the darkness. The ticking continued. Four minutes... twelve seconds. "We don't have time," Elena said. Adrien examined the device beneath the chair. "It isn't a normal bomb." "How do you know?" "It has no visible trigger." He traced the wires with his eyes until they disappeared beneath the marble floor. "They want us to cut the wrong one." Elena noticed something tucked beneath the captive woman's sleeve. A folded piece of paper. She carefully reached forward, avoiding the wires. Inside was a handwritten message. One lie protects one killer. Before she could read another line, every light in the mansion went out. Darkness swallowed the hall. A woman's scream echoed upstairs. Then... Silence. --- Emergency lights flickered to life. The chair was empty. The captive woman had vanished. "So did the bomb," Elena whispered. There was nothing beneath the chair. No wires. No explosives. Only a single crimson rose resting on the seat. Adrien frowned. "It was an illusion." "No." Elena picked up the rose. "It was a performance." Someone wanted them to believe they had been forced to make an impossible choice. The question was... Why? --- Back at Major Crimes, the atmosphere was tense. Captain Holloway stood before the investigation board. Without a word, he removed every photograph connected to the Aurora Circle. "What are you doing?" Elena demanded. "The case is no longer yours." Her expression hardened. "You can't be serious." "I've received orders." "From who?" "I can't tell you." Adrien stepped forward. "You mean you won't." Holloway's jaw tightened. "You two have crossed a line. Walk away now while you still can." "And if we don't?" Elena asked. The captain looked at them with genuine sadness. "Then Blackridge will bury both of you." He walked out without another word. --- Late that evening, Elena found Adrien alone in the evidence room. He was staring at an old photograph. She recognized it immediately. A young Adrien, no older than thirteen, stood beside a smiling boy. "Your brother?" she asked. Adrien shook his head. "My best friend." "What happened to him?" "He disappeared." "When?" "The night of the fire." Elena looked closer. On the back of the photograph, someone had written a single sentence. Some ghosts never die. Adrien folded the picture carefully. "I've spent ten years believing I failed him." "You were a child." "I still left him behind." For the first time, Elena saw tears gathering in his eyes. She didn't try to find the perfect words. Instead, she quietly sat beside him. Neither of them spoke. The silence wasn't awkward. It was comforting. For a few moments, they weren't detective and profiler. They were simply two people carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. Adrien finally broke the silence. "Thank you for staying." Elena looked at him. "I wasn't planning to leave." A faint smile crossed his face. It disappeared when every computer screen in the room suddenly switched on by themselves. One message filled every monitor. CHECK THE MORGUE. The words vanished. A security camera feed replaced them. The screen showed a drawer inside the city morgue slowly sliding open. There was no body inside. Only a crimson rose. And taped to the metal tray... A photograph of Elena as a little girl. Someone wasn't just watching the investigation anymore. Someone had been watching Elena her entire life.
