The Demons Reign

Chapter Six

Rowland turned and left. “He’s always poke nosing isn’t he?” Aza said walking to Elias who was still watching the oversight of the city, “Yeah but I feel relieved each time I talk to him no matter how annoying he might seem. I think he’s here for a reason which I don’t know and I’m still working on” Elias replied with a smile. “Have a drink” Aza said handing him a glass of Chapman, “How did you…?” Elias tried asking as he was surprised how a glass of Chapman got to his hand. “Don’t ask, I’m a meta-human, I figured out that’s what humans call anyone with supernatural ability and which we are among” Aza said raising his glass up for a toast.

“A toast? To what?” Elias asked, “To possibilities” Aza replied with a smile and the toast was made. After a moment of silence with sipping of drinks, Aza spoke up, “You must be mad”, “ What?” Elias asked surprised, “Yeah, you knew the devil’s plan and you still went about it… You still engaged in the fight” Aza replied, “Yeah, I have to do it anyway, everything was already programmed and we were just baits. There was nothing we could do” Elias replied as he took a sip.

“Nothing? You had a choice to walk out of there but you didn’t” Aza pointed out, this made Elias chuckle as he sipped again before answering, “I’m a demon Aza, I’m no human, humans have a choice, they always have a choice but we demons don’t, we are always subject to him” Elias said turning to Aza with a sad face. Aza looked at him for a few seconds then replied, “You seem to forget you are human now, you see Elias that’s your problem, you don’t seem to understand and know when it’s time to be a human and when it’s time to be a demon, you misplace these and that moment you had to be a human but you chose to be a demon, if you had been a human, Lucifer won’t force you and you will ruin his plan.” He said this hitting a finger on Elias chest.

“I’m not suppose to carry out this mission Aza, I’m not” Elias said sobbing, “Hey don’t cry on me now, you are better off with this job than me” Aza replied. “You think so?” Elias asked cleaning his eyes, “Yeah” Aza confirmed and walked forward, “You’re going aren’t you?” He asked, “Yes Elias but remember I got your back” Aza replied and a gosh of wind blew on Elias face as he left.

Meanwhile, Rowland heard everything because he didn’t leave, he stood behind the door and listened. His knees quacked in fear as he discovered he was working for a demon, his mouth agape and he struggled for balance as he walked slowly to his office, holding the rails of the staircase for support.

The following days wasn’t great for Rowland, his bones still quacked as he thought of that night. He avoided seeing Elias, skipped meetings and went home early. The sight of Elias made his heart skip a bit. “Mr. Kim?” Elias called for his secretary from his office and who came immediately, “have you seen Mr. Rowland since the past weeks?” He asked, “Yes Sir though a few times” Mr. Kim replied, “Does he come to work?” Elias asked, “Yes Sir” Mr. Kim replied, “then why haven’t I been seeing him if he comes to work” Elias asked, “I can ask his departmental head if you want me to” Mr. Kim suggested, “Go ahead” Elias said and Mr. Kim exited. “Where have you been Rowland?” Elias asked as he picked his phone and dialed his number.

Ring! Ring!! But no answer, he tried one more time but got the same response, “Common pick your call” Elias said as he retried but the call was cut, “what the hell? He busied my call” he said hitting his hands on the table in frustration.

On the streets, Rowland walked gently reminiscing on the night and the words he heard, “I’m working for a demon… I’ve been friends with a demon… I’ve been communicating with the Devil…. I can’t do this anymore, I’ll resign” he thought to himself but just then he passed a phone boot, few centimeters away he stopped and went in to make a call

In the company, Rose’s phone rang, “hello Miss Rose Bedford speaking”, “ hey Rose it’s me… Rowland “ the voice from the phone said, “where have you been?” Rose asked lowering her voice while looking around her. “I’ll like us to meet” he suggested, “Now? Where?” She asked, “I’ll text you the address and you can come after work I’ll wait” Rowland replied, “The boss has been looking for you, secretary Kim has come over twice and he’s talking to the HOD now and I think it’s about you… What’s going on?” Rose asked, “I’ll tell you everything as soon as we see, I’ll have to go… Bye” he said and the call was over. Rose exhaled as she continued her work.

“What do you mean he left early?” Elias asked his secretary, “Yes Sir, his departmental head said he took an excuse that he wanted to take care of an issue” Mr. Kim replied, “and he has been doing this for two weeks?” Elias said annoyed, “Yes Sir” was the response he got, “What does he take this company for? Does he know this will affect his pay?” Elias asked putting his hands on his waist, “He knows and was willing to make that sacrifice” Mr. Kim replied.

“He knows?” Elias asked in surprise, “Yes Sir” Mr. Kim replied, “and he still did it anyway, that means that something serious happened” Elias said to himself in a low tune, “Excuse me Sir” Mr. Kim said asking to hear what his boss was saying, “Never mind Mr. Kim, you can go. Thank you” Elias said and his secretary left.

At the end of the work day, Rose went to meet Rowland who was waiting for her in a restaurant, “Hey” Rowland said offering her a seat, “Hey” she replied sitting down, “Thanks for coming to meet me” he said smiling, “No problem” Rose replied as she scanned the room with her eyes, “so is this a date?” Rose asked with a smile, this made Rowland chuckle as he replied, “Kind of”, “okay” she said as he picked up the menu beside her and read. In few minutes their meal was served and they ate in silence for a while.

Rowland broke the silence, “What if I told you that we are working for a demon. On hearing this Rose almost choked as she rushed to drink water beside her, “what are you talking about?” She asked after swallowing water. “You told me to find out his weird behavior and that’s what I found out, I witnessed him talking to someone, he referred to himself as a demon, I even saw the man he was talking to” he said, “Rowland, if he referred to himself as a demon, it could be figurative, maybe he’s hard and strong and maybe he behaves evilly” she replied, “No it’s not, he said it with his mouth and I heard it and my body quacked, an unusual fear overwhelmed me, I know what I’m saying” he said, “You know you’re accusing someone without proof and it’s a criminal offence” Rose pointed out, “Rose believe me, you know I never accuse except am sure” Rowland pleaded, “Honey I do want to believe you but I have to be sure” Rose replied touching his cheek, “Okay, then you find out yourself…” he replied taking an amount of food into his mouth, “…. And you were the only person that came to mind to talk to, why?” “Well what do you think?” Rose asked him smiling. Rowland smiled, rubbed his hands together before he said, “Maybe it’s confession time, I like you Rose.”

“Hey Row” Elias said as he met Rowland coming back at the entrance of his house. “What are you doing here?” Scared Rowland asked as he stepped backwards, “You’ve been absent from work and I haven’t seen you in days” Elias replied smiling, “that’s because I don’t want to see you” Rowland said sternly, “why is there fear and anger in your voice?” Elias asked concerned as he stepped towards him, “Don’t come near me…” Rowland said raising his hands in front suggesting a stop, “… Just go away”. “ Rowland, I don’t understand why you are acting this way, it’s me Elias, you’re seeing no ghost, I'm flesh and blood “ Elias assured him as he came closer but this time Rowland fled into his house locking the door behind him.

“What can this be?” Elias asked himself as he left, entering into a dark corner of the street. Once he was sure that he was alone, he rubbed his hands together, raised his head, be called out using his demon voice, “Son of darkness, the first cast away, Lucifer come forth” his eyes turned red and a wicked smile rose on his face.

“Why calleth on me in that manner?” A voice said using old English as he stepped out from the darkness with smoke floating around him. He didn’t wear a suit this time, he was bare chested and his body covered with the hotness of coal, a pair of wings attached to his back and his canine teeth protruded as that of a vampire. His presence was terrifying as the mortal body of Elias couldn’t take it anymore, pulling him down on his knees and his head powered to the creature. “You’re terrifying me” Elias said in a quaky voice.

I have to remind you why humans dread me by appearing like this” Lucifer said laughing. “The human body is weak and helpless” Elias concluded as he tried getting up his feet.
