The Last Dance.
Remnie sat on her couch with a cup of coffee, the t.v. droning in the back ground. The news was on, but her attention wasn't on the news. Her attention wasn't really on much, yet. She was never really a morning person. She stirred hazelnut cream into her coffee and lit a cigarette. She sipped the coffee and mumbled "Mmmm". into her cup. She picked up a small remote and the blinds slid open on her floor to ceiling windows. She jumped up in shock. The sky looked like it was on fire. Swirling angry red and orange colors filled the morning sky. Her phone rang. She picked it up without looking at the caller ID. "Hello?" "Rem? Turn on the news now! Right now!" It was her brother, Hunter. Remnie grabbed her remote and turned up the television. On the t.v. there were several cities pictured with their streets crowded by insane looking men and women covered in smeared clown make up dancing about with weapons that resembled swords but seemed to be exciting the energy in the very air and ripping ribbon like tears into the sky. At first their was a howling sound, much like screaming and a train stopping suddenly mixxed together, after a deadly silence filled the air. The maniacs dancing in the streets attacked anybody who attempted to stop them. Their weapons were so deadly, that even a touch from them were amputating limbs and leaving people fatally wounded. It was like watching a flash mob orchestrated in hell. Several minutes had lapsed sense Hunter had called. He was still on the line attempting to get his younger sisters attention. Remnie was never quite right. She fought bouts of depression and had been just recently released from the hospital while her medications were being adjusted. Hunter was scared for the entire world. He had no idea what was going on, but his biggest concern was how was he going to get across Atlanta during what looked like the end of the world? Hunter cleared his throat. "Rem? Are you still there?" Remnie smiled into the phone and stated very calmly, to calmly, "Hunter, they ripped the sky apart, why haven't we been sucked into space like a giant vacuum?" Hunter was floored. "I'm not sure. I'm coming to you. Don't go outside. You hear me? Don't you dare go outside until I get there." The t.v. black screened and a humming noise filled her apartment. Remnie took a deep breath in and as she breathed out she said, "I won't.I promise". The phone line broke up as she said it and all Hunter heard was "Promise." as the line died. Remnie went to her kitchen and began filling containers with water. She had a feeling things would get worse before they got better. She finished her coffee and decided to take a shower now, who knew if she'd be able to later. The shower ran hot and steamy over her body as she scrubbed body wash into her skin. A loud pop coming from outside made her jump. For a momment she thought it was a gun shot,, but it must of been a transformer as the lights blinked for a momment and were gone. Her Hands gropped in the dark for the handles and found her goal quickly. She felt her way to the bathroom door and swung it open, dim red glow came through the windows lighting her way as she made her way to her bedroom and put on some comfortable clothes. She picked out a grey T-shirt and jeans and wrapped a towel around her long wavy dark hair. It occurred to her she should eat somthing so she headed to the kitchen. Her stove was a gas stove so she checked the gas and lit it with a match so she could heat up some soup. She took her meal to the windows and sat indian style on the floor watching the insanity continue outside. She sat there awhile, picking at her soup and watching these strange people manicly ripping at the sky and anybody who attempted to stop them. Where were the police? National guard? Military? What were they doing to the sky? Why did that howling start and end so quickly? No cars moved on the streets below. How would Hunter make it five miles on foot without any trouble? She went to her linen closet and found an old battery powered radio and some candles that she had shoved up there in case of a bad storm. This qualified. All the FM stations had the same message on repeat saying to stay in your homes and wait for further instructions at a later unspecified time. She rolled her eyes. She switched to AM radio nearly every station was static and then she found it. A man was reporting from his home where he had a generator. He urged people to stay calm, stay inside, and do not engage with the men and women involved. Remnie rested her head in her hand and mumbled "No s**t". Her mind began to race, she was engulfed with questions. It was as if logic had disappeared in the course of a few hours. As she continued to watch from her window, head in hand the crowd thinned and the screaming chaos below moved on, maybe to the next town. She hoped Hunter made it to her soon. She had killed a couple hours showering, gathering water and eating. She stood up and took her dish to the sink, the tap was still good! She lit a candle and placed it on a plate to use as a wax catcher. She made a mental note to make some basic lanterns out of soda cans later. She smirked at her accumulated knowledge from the scouts and obsessive reading. So much of her random knowledge would come in handy now, it may actually of been worth all those hours combing over survival books and articles. She shrugged at the thought and headed towards the bathroom with her candle in tow, she decided to fill the tub with water. This way if she lost water she could still flush the toilet a few times. She stared at the medicine cabinet for a long momment, as the water filled the tub in the back ground. She wrestled with the thought of taking a sleeping pill and getting a nap in. She quickly grabbed one pill out and dry swallowed it down. She shut the tap off and headed back to her living area. The radio was still auditable from the dining area where her windows revealed the damaged sky glowing red and orange into her open floor plan. She picked up the radio and placed it on the coffee table. She then grabbed a coke from the fridge quickly as not to waste the cool air trapped inside. Remnie pulled a blanket off the back of the couch and was thankful that it was October in Georgia. It might be a little cool, but it would not be cold enough to freeze. Unless the atmosphere was damaged. God. Who knew? As she sipped her coke she refocused on the radio. The man said it seemed the government had abandoned them. He stated he was checking on CB radio and also operated as a H.A.M that as far as he could gather the atmosphere was in fact being damaged and no government help was ever deployed. Her medication began to kick in, her mind dulled as it resonated as a final thought= Help was not coming.
